New York, Chicago, Montreal and Mexico City are the only true "Cities" in North America, according to the late Anthony Bourdain. His definition required 24hr hospitality and "nightlife", world class collections of art, symphonies, ballet companies, theatres and of course world class food and dining.
Shaun, Thanks for visiting the USA again. And thanks fro the positive feedback. You and Lawrence did a great job in showing the real good things about the USA. And of course, Scotland is a great country too.
I spent 2,5 months in USA in the summer of 2021 and I can honestly tell you that this trip was the BEST THING I´VE EVER DONE!!!! I loved it every minute of it, travelling between different cities (Yes Chicago included)! I love USA, really want to go back, every day I think about it! The day I came back home I already wanted to go back! USA is the best!!!❤❤❤❤❤
USA is very enjoyable and great. I like the order and clean neighborhoods in the streets. I've been to California , Las Vegas, Disneyworld. Its a country that has many great and fun things. I learned the English as a second language Greetings from Chile
I’ve been to Scotland and loved it; beautiful country! I’m 1/7th Scottish and I/7 Irish and love the sound of bagpipes and the history and music of both countries!
Chicago is definitely my favorite American city. Used to live there and miss it quite a bit (the prices, not so much). The architecture is simply amazing.
I thought that bowl pizza looked gross, I thought well you're not making me hungry with that. Then I saw that cake! omg Now I want to make a cheesecake.
Millennium park used to be a huge train yard and industrial business area. Mayor Daley in the 90s decided to bring green park areas into downtown with more flowers and public art. I love that he did that. Downtown is beautiful and pretty clean.
I went to Chicago well over a decade ago when I was about 12 and it was amazing. By far my favorite large city. Coming from a rural background, I can say Chicago is the only large city I genuinely enjoyed as much as the smaller cities and towns that I typically prefer. I would love to go back some day.
I was there as a young child in the '80's and all I can remember is the amount of lanes there were on the roadways and the pizza, I can't forget how they baked peppers and onions into the crust which I didn't like those veggies then but ended up loving it, and the pizza was so thick I didn't think my mouth was wide enough to take a bite! It was the best pizza I've ever had, maybe I'll make it back there someday to see if it's as good as I remember.
I live 25 miles west of downtown Chicago. The suburbs are great here as well, but there's nothing like being in the heart of the city. I agree that it's like a cleaner (obviously smaller) version of NYC. It was an honor to have you here!
Sorry about the headache. It may have been from spending the day in the heat with all the bright sunshine. One thing they did right in Chicago was to preserve the waterfront as public space. It makes the city so pleasant and free to people who want to spend time outdoors. I wish they'd done the same thing in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I live. You're blessed to have friends like Pam who will do things like bake a special cheesecake for you.
Cold is a state of mind. I have no problem with cold weather when I dress for it and I tell my mind that its not cold. It felt hot the other day when the temperature was 15 degrees because it was 52 degrees warmer than the wind chill from a couple of days before.
Winter isnt even that bad. Maybe I’m bias since I lived in Michigan for 6 years (originally from Chicago) but this winter we had like 4 days of snow total
Born and raised in Chicago until I was 13, then moved out of state. I’m now in my early sixties and still have the Chi-CAH-go accent. Great city. Great people.
Chicago is a great city. It's fallen in some areas, and the crime rate has skyrocketed, but you visited the better parts that really showcase what an amazing cultural treasure that city is and can be. (I lived in the suburbs near Chicago for 3 years growing up, way back when...) My observation about the Midwest as a native Californian: it's cleaner and more orderly than the coastal areas (you were spot on with that note), people are politer, and very proud of their heritage as Americans. Chicago is perhaps more sophisticated in many ways than other cities in the Midwest, because it's also a "coastal" city and has the advantage of the Great Lakes to bring commerce and cultural diversity. Not to knock other Midwestern cities, but that's just an economic and social reality. Sorry for the lecture 😅. I'm happy that you enjoy visiting our country. Much appreciation to Scotland from America.
So great to see you discovering the beauty of Chicago! I was raised and went to college there, loved it so much that I was sure I’d spend my life there, but destiny had other plans. Have lived in NY, Boston, CA, and ended up traveling all over the US, Europe, South America, India, Japan, Mexico, so have been blessed to see and appreciate a lot of the world. Chicago is a gem of the US, the midwestern culture is the best. I miss it all the time. Always looking for a way home there.
Outside of New York, Chicago is America's best city. Well, San Fran is pretty good too. Definitely top 3. Always something fun to get into!! Great video
I've seen that pizza pot pie before and it looks really cool and yummy. I hope you did a takeaway and were able to enjoy it once your headache was gone. That was a very nice gesture from your subscriber and the cheesecake looked amazing!
Chicago is just amazing. I’ve lived my life in Dallas, Texas, but if I had to choose another US city to live in, it would be Chicago. It’s like a cross between a very livable city like Dallas, and the fast pace/big city of NYC. I don’t think I could handle the winters, however. 🥶 Went once in the winter and it is no joke.
I live 35 miles north of Chicago. The architecture in the city is beautiful. A night cruise up the Chicago river is spectacular. I used to park on Navy Pier back in my old college days before it got all fancy.
Agreed. As much as people like to roll their eyes at doing 'touristy' things in certain cities, the river tour of Chicago's architecture is a must in my opinion. There's also a lot more to it than just 'hey look at this building, now look at this one!' The guides do a great job of telling fascinating stories about the different places you see. So much history.
Chicago is a pretty cool city. I’ve been there a couple times and it’s always interesting. That pizza you had is definitely unique and not the typical Chicago deep dish pizza but it looks amazing and I don’t doubt that it was delicious. I’m glad you had a good time and especially got to meet one of your viewers and her family!
I know you might be gone from there but when you go back to Chicago you need to check out Mysterions Chicago tours they do ghost and architecture also on the boats so glad to see you in my town!
For me, this was one of your best videos. You seemed so happy and even at a loss for words... which is a rarity itself. :-) I hope your headache didn't put too much of a dampener on your good time.
Beautiful cake & fun video. I agree w/your assessment on the layout & overall neatness of Chicago compared to NY (yes, I've been there more than once) & I agree "The Bean" is worth checking out and the constant sirens IMHO are d/t the ever-exploding crime rate in Chicago that politicians aren't as much in denial about as they are ignoring, bc if they admitted it more people would know their policies don't work. Hoping Chicago will still be here in ten years for EVERYONE to enjoy, bc it truly is a beautiful city!
Chicago native here…nice to see you enjoying all the things in my own neighborhood! And no the winters are not that bad. Being on the west side of the lake we end up with tempered weather most of the time…just don’t go over to the east side of any of the Great Lakes unless you like 5’ of snow every other week. Having been to Scotland many times and falling in love w Skye and the Highlands (where my great grandparents were born) I’ll offer you a proposition…let’s trade homes for a yr!!!
The pizza pot pie looked great! Very unique. So sweet of Pam to take you there and bake the cheesecake for you. Ya'll looked like you were having fun! Hope you have a great week ahead. God bless!
Go 5 hours west of Chicago and go t St. Louis and see another phenomenal man made structure the Gateway Arch. It is 530 ft tall. It has a car system to get up in the Arch. The view up there i beautiful.
I went to Great Lakes, Illinois, for boot camp aka Navy Basic Training, back on 24 Jan 1999. Never actually went to Chicago itself though. I want to go someday! One of the places you have to go if a few days in Illinois is FermiLab in Batavia. It was the largest particle accelerator in the world until the Large Hadron Collider was built in Europe. Not sure if they do tours. I haven't been there either. 🙂
I was really hoping you would go to my favorite pizza place in Chicago and you actually did! Their pizza in a bowl is so good! Sorry you weren't feeling good at the time.
Beautiful camera work, but that's the main branch of the Chicago River, not a canal. The Sanitary and Ship Canal is to the west. You spent a lot of time at the Bean. If you had brought some toast, you'd have felt right at home!
I went to Chicago in 2005 when I was 11 with my family, I haven't been back since, but I really want to, this video brought back a lot of good memories, Thanks Shaun :)
Born and raised Chicagoan here. Unpopular opinions I hold about the city: Cloud Gate is cool + deep dish & stuffed are different yet equally delish as tavern style/party cut pizza. Chicagoans tend to poopoo these things, but they just come across as trying too hard to be "authentic."
As a lifelong Chicagoland resident, I love all of those things, too! But I do find that thin crust is my favorite. I was hoping that they could check out the fountain in Millennial Park as well, but I guess they didn’t make it over there.
Chicagoan here. Cloud Gate is a fantastic piece of public art and definitely "cool". The entirety of Millennium Park is a public space any major city in the world would want. In fact, Chicago has stunning art on display all over the city, not just in world class art museums like the Art Institute of Chicago. The Chagall mural and Picasso sculpture are only blocks away from Millennium Park.
As a person who has been in Chi a few times and traveled there in passing on so many trains i have lost track. (Sorry) The one burning question i have always had about Chi is “ How can people actually survive in a place that is so deep in canary yellow air?” That said, i am glad you have had good experiences in the US, and met some of the lovely folks. We love it, with all its warts, but but i’ve never been a fan of any really big city, and have never understood why anyone would actually choose to live in them. Small cities, ok, but i have been glad for the hills, forests, green and lightly inhabited places and many lakes of the state i grew up in and returned to, for my final years. Travel and living in other places is fun, but in the long run, there is no place like home.
Chicago is great, but you really missed out passing over St Louis. It’s really a great town with amazing local food culture, and fantastic cultural amenities that are in many cases free.
Lol that’s not a canal. It’s the Chicago River. I love Chicago and loved taking the Architecture cruise. One of the highlights of Chicago is its beautiful buildings. Nandos is in most large cities now. And their suburbs.
Can’t wait to see the videos on the new channel! I do love your home videos. As much as I enjoy the travel ones I love seeing you share stuff from Scotland. Slainte
I am so glad you had a good time in Chicago. There is so much to see and do there. It is clean. The street cleaners work overtime at night. And the trash is always picked up. Sidewalks used to be pressure washed at night as well when I was a kid. You didn't say if you got a hot dog or a beef sandwich? I hope you did.
Also, the city has alleyways to keep the dumpsters in, so you don’t have the bags of garbage sitting on the sidewalk waiting for pickup that you do in downtown NYC. Those alleys are a real boon to the city!
Born and bred Chicagoan living in Phoenix. I never saw pizza like that. Looked good. You were in front of Garrett's popcorn, did you get some Chicago mix?? THE best popcorn ever!!!! Thanks for some beautiful shots of my hometown!! The Cubs game was great too. Wrigley Field and Lincoln Park Zoo are my most favorite places in the world. Thanks again for the videos. P.S. I have the same Cubs cap. I bleed Cubby blue : -)
❤❤❤❤ love love seeing this, I was supposed to come meet you this day ugh I’m so sorry I’m much further from the city than I used to be, I swear I will meet you someday! I’m so glad you two got to adventure thru some of my fav parts of Chicago!! I hope you get to come back again, I’m so glad you enjoyed your time & the bean will always be one of my all time fav pieces of art 🖼 take care I’m going to subscribe to your new channel also!!🎉🎉🎉
You know when you watch a TV show, they are mostly filmed over a year ago. Usually more than that. I have a full time job and a life to think about - if I don’t do this sustainably I will crash.
I have only been a little of Chicago a good while ago. My parents and two of my brothers crammed into a hotel room for my oldest brother’s wedding ( first marriage) I remember sleeping between two chairs.
You know that you can contact Viscount Andrew Morrison for assistance with getting clearance to move to the States, Shaun. Chi-town is closer to San Antonio than Edinburgh. P.S. I hope that you and Teka got to see the Field Museum while in Chicago.
Unfortunately he won’t be able to help. I need a working visa - and a company has to prove they cannot employ a local before I would be accepted. It truly isn’t easy and I’ve spent years trying
@@shaunvlog that's sad. I have said for years that those knuckleheads in D.C. need to revise the immigration laws. I have a friend in Glasgow who can't come back to his home here in Texas for a similar reason. Granted, that Sean is a native Glaswegian, but his company has an office here in Texas (I think), and Sean and his family have a home in the Texas Hill Country.
Shaun I’m a huge fan and from IL, my fav videos on your channel are when you went and watched American football, as that is my favorite sport! If you need a team to root for, the Bears are young and might be making some moves!!
I agree with both, seeing your wife more and Scotland. PS have you been to St Augustine? It is said to be the oldest city in America and it’s really cool.
Cool, oven grinder. I always ate there when I worked on Clark Street. The lookout for the St. Valentine day massacre was a floor above or next door to that restaurant.
@brownjatt21 oh no I mean that I missed that experience when I was in Chicago the last few times. I wasn't the one to show them around! I live on the east coast but have friends in chicago. And i, too, want to try that pizza place. I have already texted my friend to tell her I just saw it for the first time 😋
Chicago: a "cleaner and more organized version of New York City" - I really laughed at that. The first time I visited NYC I was dreading because I thought I'd hate it, but I LOVED it. However, to this day, I do wonder why even the best parts of Manhattan have to smell like garbage (LITERALLY garbage - not a metaphor). I very much have also loved Chicago, though I haven't been to either in years. BTW, you probably know this, but that nickname "The Windy City" doesn't refer to the lake effect weather, but to the constantly bloviating and BS'ing politicians. 🙂 True story.
Both of my parents were born and raised in Illinois, but my brothers and I were born and raised in Texas. [Still here]. My Dad always said he did not miss living in the snow! Lol!! Most of our summer vacations were spent driv8ng to Illinois and visiting family. When I got older, I started teasing my mom that all those years of going to Illinois and never 9nce did they take us to Chicago!! 🤣🤣🤣 Still have never been!! Drove on the outskirts of it once at night, but have never visited. Would like to though. 💕
You are providing very nice Camera Angles for Chicago city. That is I've ever seen. I wonder you are professional Camera staff aren't you? I want to know it.
Ah, you're making me homesick for a place where I no longer live. That's the Chicago River downtown, it doesn't become a canal until you get out of town. And that was no kind of pizza I ever saw. You may well have enjoyed it but not the typical Chicago pizza. That should be deep dish, stuffed or tavern style (my fave). And problems can arise if a Cubs hat is worn on the South side.
Now you are in a great state, and Chicago is home to the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago White Sox. The Bears are my favorite, but they are not very good this year. They have some good deep dish pizza, but if you want a good thin crust pizza come to where I live. About a 2.5 hour drive from Chicago is East Peoria Illinois, right on main street they have a place called FireHouse pizza and pub. It has a thin crust pizza to die for, and that is the meat lovers pizza. If you are near it go in and order the thin crust meat lovers pizza, the 12 inch is only $19, about $19.50 with tax, you will not regret it.
🙋🏽♀️ New Yorker here and I must say I bristled a little when you said Chicago is “a cleaner more organized version of New York” 🤣🤣 but honestly Chicago does look pretty, I can see how it would be less overwhelming to a tourist than New York City lol Welcome and Hello from Brooklyn! 🤗
Chicago is a much newer city than New York so the streets are grided and the buildings have alley ways for the trash unlike New York. That's is why it is cleaner and more organized.
Me and my wife went to see Rammstein last summer in Chicago. We ate at a Chicago style pizza place that was across the street from the Bean. I guess we shoulda taken the few minutes to go see it. Oh well. Maybe next time.
Love that your experiences in the big city are very cool, Shaun, however ironic, I much prefer going old school and seeing country. Been in usa all my life and am ready to just get back grass roots life. Are you Rotflmao yet?? Hugs so glad teka and you had a chance to visit our diverse country of states, people, lifestyle. Is there anymore Scotland videos coming around???

We love it, with all its warts, but but i’ve never been a fan of any really big city, and have never understood why anyone would actually choose to live in them. Small cities, ok, but i have been glad for the hills, forests, green and lightly inhabited places and many lakes of the state i grew up in and returned to, for my final years. Travel and living in other places is fun, but in the long run, there is no place like home.
Ahh the great Michigan Ave and Magnificent mile. Lived there for several months. There is a beautiful view from the IBM building that's on the river.
Chicago is great, but you really missed out passing over St Louis. It’s really a great town with amazing local food culture, and fantastic cultural amenities that are in many cases free.
St Louis can been done in 4 hours.
@@jacklewis5452 so can Chicago if you don't care about culture or seeing the city
Hello Shaun and YT video watching people
Lol that’s not a canal. It’s the Chicago River. I love Chicago and loved taking the Architecture cruise. One of the highlights of Chicago is its beautiful buildings. Nandos is in most large cities now. And their suburbs.
😂 the bean thing is almost like a hometowns fun house from some wonderful years ago.
That cake is beautiful and looks so yummy too👍👍👍
Can’t wait to see the videos on the new channel!
I did indeed but that’s for another episode ;)
Shaun & Teka merch? I’ll be watching for it.
What a gorgeous cheesecake! That was so kind of Pam
❤❤❤❤ love love seeing this, I was supposed to come meet you this day ugh I’m so sorry I’m much further from the city than I used to be, I swear I will meet you someday! I’m so glad you two got to adventure thru some of my fav parts of Chicago!! I hope you get to come back again, I’m so glad you enjoyed your time & the bean will always be one of my all time fav pieces of art 🖼 take care I’m going to subscribe to your new channel also!!🎉🎉🎉
Yeah Chicago woohoo! 🎉
It gets harder and harder to get excited about what you did back in May and June, as May and June get farther away.
Wow that cheesecake looked amazing!
I lived in Chicago for two years in my early 20s. Loved every minute of it. Great town!
@@shaunvlog I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure you and your wife would be assets to our country. Never give up!
I loved visiting Chicago. The farthest East I've every been😹 Great Pizza!
Love you guys
I agree with both, seeing your wife more and Scotland. PS have you been to St Augustine? It is said to be the oldest city in America and it’s really cool.
We love you too!!❤️🤗🐝
Thanks
Cool, oven grinder. I always ate there when I worked on Clark Street. The lookout for the St. Valentine day massacre was a floor above or next door to that restaurant.

Lookin sharp with the cubbies hat mate
Loved this video!
I hope you checked out Buckingham Fountain!
Hi Shaun!
If you're ever around Louisville, you've got a free tour guide here. Bourbon Trail included! Safe travels!
Hope you saw the famous Water Tower too!
I love Pam!
Move to Chicago! I love my home town.
I also love that you bought a cubs hat wooo 🥳 ❤
Should have tried a shot of Malort !!! It's a Chicago tradition, only the most delicious alcohol known to man kind yummmm 😋
One I missed. Gladly so, lol!
@@LindaC616 Hahaha that would have been a funny reaction if caught on cam. That was nice of you to show them around Linda! Gotta try that pizza spot.
@brownjatt21 oh no I mean that I missed that experience when I was in Chicago the last few times. I wasn't the one to show them around! I live on the east coast but have friends in chicago. And i, too, want to try that pizza place. I have already texted my friend to tell her I just saw it for the first time 😋
@@LindaC616 oh haha my mistake, for some reason i thought i remembered her name as Linda. And yes you gotta try malort once 😂
@brownjatt21 I watch the try Channel and I have heard about it. Thank you though!😄
That was the Jay Pritzker Pavilion designed by world famous architect Frank Gehry.
Check out our Great Smoky Mountains Scottish Festival and Games this May 20-21 in Townsend Tennessee
Hopefully I can join in one day
Chicago: a "cleaner and more organized version of New York City" - I really laughed at that.
Much of my family lived in Chicago but they’ve decided that they prefer being warmer and moved south to Texas and Arkansas.
Your the best Shaun.
You are providing very nice Camera Angles for Chicago city. That is I've ever seen.
I wonder you are professional Camera staff aren't you?
I want to know it.
Enjoy your journey!! ❤
Visit in the season Shaun did, please.
🙋🏽♀️ New Yorker here and I must say I bristled a little when you said Chicago is “a cleaner more organized version of New York” 🤣🤣 but honestly Chicago does look pretty, I can see how it would be less overwhelming to a tourist than New York City lol
Welcome and Hello from Brooklyn! 🤗
Don’t worry NYC is still my favourite place by far - I love the beautiful mess and craziness 🗽😊
Chicago has alleys. We dont put the garbage on the streets for the tourists to walk around and smell.
Well seeing that we get close to DOUBLE the amount of tourists Chicago gets, I’m guessing people don’t mind the lack of alleys in NYC so much 😏 🤷🏽♀️
Chicago is a much newer city than New York so the streets are grided and the buildings have alley ways for the trash unlike New York. That's is why it is cleaner and more organized.
Me and my wife went to see Rammstein last summer in Chicago. We ate at a Chicago style pizza place that was across the street from the Bean. I guess we shoulda taken the few minutes to go see it. Oh well. Maybe next time.
You need to hit up Hershey and Hershey Park amusement park. You wont regret it.
