  • In this video I expand my Synology DS1815+ with a 10TB disk that came from my Synology RS1219+
I am replacing a 4TB with a 10TB. It took the NAS 4 days to finish the expansion.
Also I test out two 10TB SAS drives,, with out reviarling to much,, with less luck.

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

I used to follow your channel around the time you got your braces, then for some reason I moved on. I decided to search for new videos and subscribe again and it seems you bought a house in my country, in a region I know well. I wish you the best for the future, it's a beautiful region and the people there are wonderful. Older people might not be very happy seeing so many foreigns moving here, just smile and be warm and they'll start bringing you food every weekend :)

You should use a medium between the table and the server laid upon it to insulate against acoustic amplification/vibration induced by the wooden table, the shape of the table underneath is acting like a speaker too :)

Due to using SHR1(or raid5/1) before performing an drive replacement you should really do a backup first (this is your backup so not this one) then run a data scrub (ideally should be enabled to run automatically every month like say the 5th) and all other drives should have passed previous smart extended scan as well (ideally should be ran as a task every 3 months usually say day 15th)
Data scrub is only fully effective if your using btrfs and have enabled Checksum on all share folders (as it checks the filesystem data first and attempts to correct before running a raid sync witch would prevent that)
Synology also has secure erase option witch triggers the drives built in ATA secure erase (zero clears it) it can sometimes bring a bad drives back to good health but should only be used in SHR2/RAID6 for possible reliability reasons (unless it's been disabled in firmware then secure erase will be grayed out, drive must be in a deactivated or not initialised state for secure erase to be available and drive has to support it witch most do)

I do not have to back up,, as this is a backup,, the off-line backup.
This is one of three copies... there is the 24/7 copy, the off-line backup and the off-site copy.

    • @leexgx

@@MyPlayHouse I think you missed the bit where I said "this is your backup so not this one" (might have worded it not very well sorry)
As this is an information video most people don't back up there Nas and still use SHR1 and don't usually understand that this is a really critical state when a disk has failed or even more dangerous when rebuilding as it can fail due to another drive failing and sometimes destroying all the data
Backup first, data scrub and smart extended scan then replace drive, if this SHR2/RAID6 you can mostly skip all them steps because you still have redundancy and it's extremely unlikely 2 drives never mind 3 drives to fail (assuming maintenance tasks have been ran, like data scrub and smart extended, as they usually pickup on a bad drive early) , backup is still recommend first even when using SHR2/RAID6 as raid is not a backup 😁 (on its own)
if this is a backup (witch yours was) then if it blows up you just reset it backup and rerun backup (more care needs to be taken when when it's your only nas pulling a drive and hoping for the best)

Bad luck with the drives. Surprised you say you're happy to pay a bit more, but then shuck external drives rather than buy NAS specific drives. I guess you buy more of them than me.
