On July 10, 2023, a Portage County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop for a vehicle that was speeding in Whiting, WI. The vehicle also had an expired registration, a faulty passenger side brake lamp, and a notably cracked windshield. The driver, previously cited 30 times for driving without a license since 2007, has now confronted fines exceeding $5,000.

It's sad seeing this. I worked as a public defender. Absolutely normal, hardworking folks can get caught in this spiral of tickets overwhelming them. I live in a rural state, where a car is simply REQUIRED to get to work and home. Our system fails to adequately address this relatively simple issue: the court should issue a temporary restricted license that allows the defendant to engage in "essential travel" aka work, grocery, and home (and school if they have a child). This should be issued until the case has been adjudicated.
