Robert Cabral has been a life saver for me! I recently adopted a puppy. Mom is full malinois, dad is half german shep/rott. She is my first malinois. It was sooo frustrating and disheartening trying to find an online trainer who's balanced and doesn't need modern technology to connect with dogs. So finding Robert was a life changer, his methods work 1000%. Ive watched countless hours of his videos and I'm having great success in training my pup. I can't recommend him enough
Your method of assesment truly works. My husband and I performed these very same tests with our Malinois puppy at 8 weeks old and we brought home the best, well-rounded dog we have ever had.
I can not wait to see the series of the videos. Your knowledge and insight is fantastic. By you making these videos are so helpful. People will benefit from your videos. Can’t wait to see the rest of the segments. 🥰
Very good video.. Jack has very good pedigree medium drive .. He is the perfect jogging and hiking partner.. I took the one that licked me instead of biting me…
Well there are many variations. I picked the weakest/most untrusting puppy. Oh boy, she has everything. Drive, protection, great listening skills, food drive if needed and she does what she is told without luring so I didn't have to bribe her much. She is great. Lots of personality can be tweaked with quality training. Even the pup with the least drive can turn out a better police dog than the high drive one...generally these dogs are great either way 🥰 .
Great information. Your advice goes along with how I’ve always picked my pups( Breeder/Pedigree ). Backyard breeders are just that…. Not interested in best for you.. just the money.. I’m looking forward to the next video in the series.
Hey Kay, thanks for the video it is so important. I have a GSD (working lines) at training there was a Mal who was so so nervous and the owner has so much more work to do. Really excited for the series. I really love watching your videos
I gotta admit I picked the biggest, best looking dog that stood out to me, as I couldn't travel to see them I choose the one that just hit me in the face with her colours.. black underneath and a black line along her back along with black fawn colouring else were. Her mum is totally black and dad is normal most common malinois colours. Both parent dogs are family dogs around children. She is stunning, opened her eyes first, is the biggest and chunkiest dog and was the first dog up on her feet and moving around. The parents live at home so I will get to see both parents.. iv seen videos and pictures of both parents and all 6 pups. 5 females 1 male... I basically had first pic of the litter. I pick her up just before Christmas. Iv waited 4 years for this since my akita Bella died back in 2017. I didn't think I'd get another dog but I miss a companion and friend to go out with. I can't wait to train her to a better ability than I trained my last akitas. I trained the basics but didn't really try to train too much. This time I'm gonna put all my effort into training her.. oh and iv called her Harley 😇
I'd love to hear in the next two videos about your personal experience choosing Riot, Fury, and Storm: What were your motives in choosing them? Did you take into account all that you told us in the first video? Are you "disappointed" with your choice? I have two more suggestions: First of all, I would like to watch Fury more. How tall is she? Why is there so little of it in your programs? It's almost always Riot and Storm. Secondly, I would like there to be more about Malinois as a companion dog, not just as a guard dog. How to make this dog friendly to people. - Your advice. Thank you
Cant wait for the rest of the series! Can you talk more about appropriate toys for puppies? (types of toys, when they're aloud to have them, do you allow toys in their crates?)
Thanks for another amazing video!! I just love everything u do on ur channel. I'm so glad ur doing this series it will be very exciting for me to watch it. I was wondering if u could show us what kind of leash and collar do u use for the being with the pups? Keep up the Awesome job u do. Tc have a great weekend
Just be prepared.. A Mal is unlike any dog you have ever owned . First time owners, don’t be surprised when you experience the fact that they are way more of everything than you ever expected..Famous last words “ I never expect it to be like THIS!!!.
And that is why a lot of Malinois are getting dumped at the shelters daily 😔 people have no idea what this breed is about! I’m a 1st time Mali owner and the 3 week I ran to a trainer THANK GOD I did lol I’m definitely loving it but I’m glad I asked for help building the base 🙂
I love this type of education. Can you do one how to go camping with a malinois? I am considering a malinois for my retirement dog and the dog will go with me to remote Alaska for my off grid hunting trips.
The only thing I disagree with is the statement about not wanting the most confident dog as a pet. I think a confident dog just makes for an easier training experience and makes it less likely for the dog to develope behavioural problems.
I've heard Michael Ellis say that the US military (or someone who trains military dogs) did a study on choosing the right dog from a litter and the conclusion was that it's impossible to know the temperament before the puppy is 16 weeks of age or older. So at 8,9,10 weeks it's a roll of a dice...
@@raymonddeflaviis2306 Who does connect with everyone though? Who said anything about being good? If you're referring to Ellis, I'd say he's excellent. A true professional. It's unfortunate you find him deadly dull, as you put it 😆

Second easy fix in use bounce lighting as fill lighting. This is actually my preferred method.
Great video plus so insightful on choosing a puppy. Looking forward to the series and your view and opinion. At 70 still undecided on puppy Raised with hunting breeds many people's advice was to see the parents but most importantly if possible is their dam and sire. That many traits will go back to that generation. What's your opinion about this? Thanks so much for your videos. Like the mixture of work and play time with your dogs. By the way you have helped me make my decision for my next breed of dog. I'm at the still grieving stage of the passing of my last dog. Rescued him as a 8 week old puppy that had no social skills and no idea of his breed but truly believe after hours of watching your videos that he had some Malinois in his bloodline. Can definitely see my mistakes trying to train him but in spite of me was great companion and was very territorial and let me know when things weren't right. Lacked the aggression to be a guard dog. Had no fear as he woke me up early morning around 3 AM and wanted me to investigate a mountain lion and walked within 10 yards of it without a growl or bark. The one thing that you told was to never expect privacy and believe me that trait he had in spades. Apologies for an old man rambling. Hope you continue making your videos as I learn and enjoy every one of them
Mal mom can you do a video on how you take care of your dogs ears? With this breed there ears are always up and they collect so much dirt and the risk of infection is high
What would be the ideal temperament for a dog that comes with me in the bush everyday for forestry( ie bears, cougars and wolves around) but also have a 5 year old at home?
Would love to know your thought on this. My experience is with labs that I train to hunt with and do hunt tests. My philosophy is to look at the parents and the breeding. Once I’m confident with the breeding it’s really just deciding on sex. Once I do that I pretty much just pick the puppy that comes to me first. As the breeding and research will show it to be a sound puppy and more than likely a sound dog. Does this philosophy translate to protective breeds.
I wouldn't think so, people have their preferences. When I was getting my Aussie I knew I wanted a red merle; but it just depends of you get "pick of the litter" or not.
Genetics only awakens in the right hands, coalescing with environmental stimulation. Pedigree only matters if you know how to channel that energy. I've seen famously bred puppies from popular kennels that are not the reality, as they were advertised to be. In the last few days a fox terrier tried to bite me, owner is struggling, yet he was bought from a reputable breeder. Yesterday a German Shepherd was going crazy, barking and lunging at us and our Malinois. She was also bought from a reputable breeder. Every breeder will use the ideological genre "genetics marketing" Domestication is not complete because you get a Dog from a reputable breeder. They are imprintable by what you do and how you operate with them in their territorial abode.
Only purpose bred. There has to be a purpose for it. I don’t like when people create stupid designer breeds and sell for thousands of dollars. There’s literally already a breed for anything and everything. No need to mix. I own a GSD/Malinois. They’re both in the shepherd family. I got him when I was still ignorant of the importance of reputable/responsible and ethical breeding.
