The new 2015 Plarail James looks splendid indeed and I really like that new drive unit. As a fan of the old Tomy trains, I definetly want to get my hands on one of these. Great review, great to see this model in action and I hope Plarail continues to make more engines.
In all honesty, I say this redesign looks better than the old one. This fits the whole cgi era which I'm okay with. Although I wished he had a smaller face.
This James looks so much like the 2012 TrackMaster James, the differences must be so minute. And the buffers, it's actually nice to see them painted on! His speed on the turntable may be quite slow but purists we know of might like it that way since it's realistic. I don't think the engine was designed with the TrackMaster turntable in mind though.
thejdogman It looks like Trackmaster James in shape only, there are many differences under the skin and with the extra painted details etc, even the faces are quite different. And yes you are right Plarail probably didn't have old trackmaster accessories in mind when they designed it but I like the backwards compatibility of new plarail with old Trackmaster accessories :)

I know what you should do with that tender. Remember how you said the cap on the tender comes off but is just glued? You should take the cap off the tender and put bits of coal to make it look more realistic.
I have the tender powered James but I might buy this one to compare it to. Also is that splatter and dodge vs old arry and bert hauling contest still happening
Killer_crisis 797 Kool, I don't think I'll do that contest as they are all the same drive units and motors, the only difference would be between quality control of all of them. Now that I have it (second-hand used, but doesn't even appear that way!), I've ordered a second for a "project" I have in mind, but he just took my breath away with detail (3rd Plarail engine to do that; will Ryan be the 4th?!). I'll probably post a review once the second one arrives, but I think you did an amazing job showcasing him! Granted he does seem to run a bit slow, all engines need to be broken in to find their comfort zone and speed before having fun, hmm?

I'll say, if he ends up Plarail's last Thomas model, I won't be disappointed per say because I like the character and the model, but it'll certainly not be the highest note to leave on. Mattel wouldn't do THAT though, right? right? [nervous laughing intensifies greatly]
Howdy Tai Yagami! Unfortunately, Plarail's rendition of Ryan did not take my breath away, whereas their rendition of Hiro, Gator, and 2015 James managed to do that with such success. I have posted my thoughts regarding the Ryan and Skiff 3-piece train pack from Plarail, but I'm not surprised there's so much anxiety with when the license with the TAKARA TOMY Corporation will expire.
The cg plarail James looks so ugly what was so wrong with his original body shape, just do what they did to Thomas and only change the face. Such an unnecessary overhaul

Nice detail on this Plarail James. I will definitely get one in September. My only con is that James seems to rather slow.
Easy fix, Put a new motor in. No Soldering required and super easy. My has a Hyper Dash 3 and it's runs at a much quicker pace.

My only gripes are his speed and that he has no cab windows. But other than that, I wholeheartedly agree! Very splendid James! I just might buy one.
for cab windows, use a sharpie and go carefully so you don't draw on the boiler
I like the old version of James. it looks better with the windows and what looks like a better designed body. Or maybe it's just the windows.
