Right now it's being sold as a "lifestyle" product, and sadly it's priced that way. There are some companies trying to lower the price, but they're start-ups like Qube and are having trouble getting off the ground. As these products become more mainstream, the price will definitely drop, as making the product itself is not very expensive.
thanks for the perfect showcase of this lighting equipment video now i can buy this product without worrying about not having a clue as to what I am buy
Do you have to plug the light strips into the hue bridge? Because my router is 1 room away from light strips. Does the Hue Bridge connect to the lights automatically as soon as you plug in the lights? Thanks!
After seeing the RUclips videos comparing the Hue vs LIFX, I was confused of what to buy. So, I bought both lights on 10/1/2017. I can confidently say that the HUE lights were very weak compared to LIFX. There is no comparison, the LIFX were 10 times better. I immediately returned the HUE light strip. Save your time and take my word for it! Reply
I installed the extension kit to my light strips plus and trimmed what was not needed on the extension piece. Once I made the cut along the hash mark with the scissors icon, the white LEDs on half the remaining strip went out. Could this be a defective strip? Has anyone else experienced this?
Can this item be hard wired into the wall or do you have to use an outlet? I like the idea of using this light in my kitchen but I don't want to have to mess with hiding the cords.
No, you can use it with the Hue Wireless Dimmer Switch, but it will only give you on/off and dimming functions. To get all of the functionality and color mixing options, you'll need the Bridge.
There are some apps available that will tap into the full effects set of the Lightstrip Plus, although fast strobing may not be one of them. The LIFX products support strobes and some other special effects that the Hue lineup doesn't currently support.
Does this light strip work with the Hue Motion Sensor? I want to use this set up for the bathroom at night with the motion sensor to turn on the light strip mounted under the vanity
It does, sort of. The Philips Hue system itself supports Groups, as well as Rooms. But the Hue app itself only supports Rooms (for whatever weird reason they chose to do that). Many third-party Hue apps, like Hue Lights, can be used to manage groups of lights, which can then be integrated into scenes and such...or controlled directly.
I am planning on putting my light strip on my bed frame and desk. Do you have to buy 2nd box just for the just power adapter or can you just buy 1 box and have the light strip cut in half so I can have it in 2 places at the one time.
If you connect the strips together with the extensions, then no. But if you have "separate" strips, each one needs its own power supply / transceiver box - e.g. you have to buy the "starter strip kit" for each one.
Would you know if I am able to use the 6.6' lightstrip as an extension instead of the 3.3' option? Do you know if the end beneath the heat shrinked end would plug directly into the extension end of another 6.6' strip? Or would a male to male connector on the extension end work if connecting directly to another 6.6" lightstrip (cutting off the opposite end at the shrinkwrap)? Thanks
Should be able to, yes. It just can't exceed a total of 10 meters (~33 ft). You have to use the existing connectors, or dare to cut it and solder to extension wires manually.
Nice video. How flexible is the strip? I'm looking into something like this to go around a room, so will it be flexible enough to stay flat on the floor and bend round corners?
Thanks! It's very flexible, and the adhesive on the back is really great. Check out our mini-series of the installation in the strip into my glass and metal TV stand, in which the strip had to bend around some 90-degree corners: ruclips.net/video/xKuN0pmqi9A/видео.html
+Jochem Messmer Sadly no, the entire strip changes color. But that would be a great idea that they could implement in a future version! It would require dedicated controls for each LED and might get complicated to produce.
I'm trying to install these lights into a cube shelf that is stacked in steps (Stack of 3, stack of 2, then 1) I'm trying to install these lights in a way so that I can either make each row, each column, or each cube a different color. Would I have to buy 3 $90 light strips to make each a different color, could I get extensions and make those different colors or what would your solution be ? I'd really appreciate your help I'm having difficulty planning all this out (I'm moving soon and I'm trying to figure out what I want and how to do it before I spend all my money)
Totally understandable, and it sounds like it'll be a cool project once it's done. The challenge with these light strips is that to do individual colors on each strip, you have to get multiple strips. And that especially goes for if you want to have each cube be a different color. But, there might be a different solution to get a similar result with a competing product from LIFX. They make the Z light strips that provide multiple zones of controllable light & color in each strip. So, you could have just one "starter kit" and get a number of extensions instead of a number of starter kits. If you planned the route for the light strips correctly, they could potentially weave around all of your cubes, going from one to another and you could setup presets in the LIFX app that would create different colors for each cube. Check out our initial review of the LIFX Z here: ruclips.net/video/yi0_gpj1FuA/видео.html
+Varun Shukla We have yet to review Lifx and we have mixed feelings about it based on existing reviews and feedback we've received from viewers. Philips Hue requires a bridge to operate, thus making it more costly to "buy into" the Hue system. Their devices run on an existing, well-tested control system while Lifx runs on pure Wi-Fi. Philips Hue is also backed by a large and experienced company while Lifx is a brand-new startup. Personally, I can say the Philips Hue is quite reliable and has a large ecosystem of products now, where Lifx only has two main products. We will be reviewing Lifx in the spring.
Have you checked out the project videos on illuminating the TV stand? It is lit by the light strip and I show the installation and some examples, hopefully that might be useful.
Thanks for the review. Is the color green also as bright as it should on these strips? I know the hue light bulbs doesn't have a bright green and blue in them.
Very well done video, I appreciate you posting. I'm really going to consider these. I have two separate projects, or uses, I'm thinking about. One is to install these either under, or on top, of my kitchen cabinets. Two is, I have a display cabinet with some collectibles that needs some lighting. Do you think these would be the best choice for these two projects? Have you done any videos doing anything similar? Thank you, John
Thank you for your kind words. There's a video series installing this particular product (Lightstrip Plus) into a metal and glass TV stand, which is along the lines of the projects you mentioned. These flexible light strips are really great for placing inside cabinets and also for under and over-cabinet lighting. However, for cabinet lighting, sometimes the space under and over the cabinets is not entirely flat, and you'd have to bend the lightstrip around potential obstacles where the strip itself could become visible - which usually isn't desired. Sometimes for under/over cabinet lighting, it's best to use the small "puck"-style lights that are sold at many home improvement stores and IKEA. However, most of these systems aren't as versatile as Philips Hue as far as control, but they can be hooked into a dimmer or on/off switch for control. You can reference this video for seeing how a Lightstrip Plus install can work: ruclips.net/video/xKuN0pmqi9A/видео.html
+Zlatan Ibrahimović This particular product doesn't need to be plugged into a router, but the Philips Hue Bridge does need to be plugged into your router or switch/hub on your local network.
+Zlatan Ibrahimović Sure. And yes, you'll plug the Hue bridge into your ethernet connection and then that will enable any Hue lights that you pair with the bridge. You might want to get a Ethernet switch or hub so that you can potentially have other things connected to your Ethernet network / Internet connection.
+Lighting Answers I bought an ethernet switch from amazon, kinda cheap but connecting the bridge into the ethernet port in my dorm did not work. Would buying a router make it work or not? please help as I've spent money on these. I wanted to have the for my college room... they can always be used at home but is there a way to get it working here
Hi, I was wondering if you could use this on a computer setup...? I don't want the cheaper ones because they seem pretty bad, so could I use this on a wooden "computer-desk"? note; I will use this on the back of the desk to make the wall look cooler, it wont be over heated or anything doing that right? Thanks :)
Can it work with other common home automation controller e.g. Vera Lite (so that I do not need to rely on Philips Bridge which can only control Philips light)?
The Philips Hue bridge can control non-Philips Hue lights and accessories, as it is actually based on ZigBee, a standard home automation technology. I don't believe Vera supports ZigBee natively, though. ZigBee devices that can't connect directly to a controller need a bridge so that they can be controlled from other systems via Wi-Fi / TCP/IP / "The Cloud". Hope that helps.
Hey, what do I do to set the wireless Phillips hue lightstrip extension I have the bridge I just don't know how to hook that light strip up it's the 40" strip of you could reply it would help thanks!
Smarter Home Life hey man yeah listen I wasn't thinking when I went and bought it so I only got the extension along with the bridge I didn't get the starter kit😂 I was just being dumb but I'm headed out today to purchase the starter kit! Thank you for actually replying though man it helped because reading that made me realize that it was only an extension aha, sorry you had to answer to that dumb question, hope your having an awesome day!
+MrWulvig Yes, you can via a converter plug - easy to find with travel adapters and such. The power supply is rated 100-240 volts and 50-60 Hz and should work just fine in Norway. Check your local electric standards before plugging-in, just in case :-)
My bridge wont find the device. And i cant add it manually because the strip or box do not have a serial number on it? I looked around for a hour now :S
There should be identifying information on the "transceiver box" that plugs into the strip. You're using the starter strip with the box and plug that goes into the wall, right...not the extension strip?
man, this video is amazing! I have one question though. could be silly but, let me ask you... is it possible to set these Philips light devices in a way that the color change happens automatically according to the music you are playing or a movie? Thank you!
+Daniel Maia Yes, the functionality isn't built in but there are apps that will do the music / video translation and create the light show automatically. We'll try to do a demo of this in the future. Thanks for watching!

Yes, as long as you have a Philips Hue Bridge, you're all set. The original Bridge isn't compatible with HomeKit, but I'm not sure if they're even selling that one any longer. The old and new Bridges are compatible with all of the Philips Hue lighting products.
I bought the extension today (my fault), went back to the store and bought the stripe plus, went back home again and found out that I have to buy the fucking Bridge to change the colors... damnit
LOL... I did exactly the same thing. No where does it say you needs this for that etc.... So something I thought was cheap has cost me quite a bit of money. But it looks cool!
I hate to ask such a pain in the ass question, but would you happen to know the EXACT length of the power cord cable? I know in the video you said "about 8 feet" and I just measured what my cable run would be and exactly 8 feet barely would might make it, but honestly if there was another inch or two it would be perfect lol. Sorry again in advance but if you have the answer to this I would greatly appreciate it. I can't seem to find the answer anywhere online.
It's a pretty cool led strip, however it's way too expensive for what you get! I would probably recommend finding another solution. For the price I was hoping for a addressable led strip.
you youtube guys just should add it that people need the bridge hue too for that shit. The App that you show needs the bridge hue too and cost like the strips
Yes, it won't be a perfect 90 degrees because it shouldn't be bend quite that far, but you can get it pretty close. Watch this video series to see some up-close shots of how I implemented it into a TV stand: ruclips.net/video/xKuN0pmqi9A/видео.html
Thank you for your help, it's greatly appreciated, I'm planning to fit the whole kitchen in today 👍 this home automation is a very expensive hobby on finding out LOL, down 800 quid and it's only been two weeks 😂
Sure thing! Yes, it can get pricey but it's worth it in the long run :-) Shoot an email with some pictures of your finished project to smarterhomelife@gmail.com- would love to feature it on our social media if you're interested :)
That would be awesome, right now as far as the project has progressed, we have LED lights along the counters in the kitchen, Alexa in every room, connected to the speaker systems in bedroom living room. Amazon echo in the kitchen, all the lights are Philips Hue obviously, in hallway bedroom bedside lamp table lamp floor lamp. Ceiling bar for living room has not yet been fitted yet but that's on the way, thermostat has been installed, most of the other devices that require some sort of connection I have connected via the TP Wi-Fi smart plugs. Outside light and ceiling light in the living room, have still yet to be fitted but I'm hoping to finish everything before Christmas.
Can you bend this light strip around corners? Example under counter tops
Do anyone think this is a rip off in terms of how much length you get? I want to buy this but it looks so darn short.
Right now it's being sold as a "lifestyle" product, and sadly it's priced that way. There are some companies trying to lower the price, but they're start-ups like Qube and are having trouble getting off the ground. thanks for the perfect showcase of this lighting equipment video now i can buy this product without worrying about not having a clue as to what I am buy
There are some cool accessories to. I did a review about them.
can this be use for sun rise simulation?
Yes, just have to set it up in the Hue app.

+Nikko P (Nikkoap92) Yes, it does :)
Can this item be hard wired into the wall or do you have to use an outlet? I like the idea of using this light in my kitchen but I don't want to have to mess with hiding the cords.
Technically yes, you could adapt the plug at the end of it to be permanently wired-in. But, of course, you didn't hear that from us, or Philips! ;-)
Can you use just the 1m extension with out the actual strip
Good idea, but unfortunately you can't. The extensions don't come with the transceiver device that the main strip plugs into.
Do you need the Bridge for this?
No, you can use it with the Hue Wireless Dimmer Switch, but it will only give you on/off and dimming functions. To get all of the functionality and color mixing options, you'll need the Bridge.

Yes. The Motion Sensor works with all Hue lighting products.

It does, sort of. The Philips Hue system itself supports Groups, as well as Rooms. But the Hue app itself only supports Rooms (for whatever weird reason they chose to do that). Do the Philips Hue Beyond and Hue Phoenix luminaries.
IAmNotAFunguy
What app were you using?
To adjust the colors, and how did you connect the bridge to the router?
The app I was using is called hue+ and it's sadly no longer available in the US version of the App Store, but somehow it's available in the New Zealand version of the App Store. It's a great, simple app. Here's another fairly straightforward app that is still available, called Huemote: itunes.apple.com/us/app/huemote-fast-remote-for-your/id983342052?mt=8 The Hue bridge was connected to the router via standard Ethernet cable.
Is this the second generation ?
Yes
How long is it in metres?
+CRAZIOS - Clash Royale & Brawl Stars 2 metres
Does the app needs wifi to control the lights?
Yes. However, you can control Philips Hue lights outside of your home via their app, too.
+Smarter Home Life thank you so much
I really like it because she always listens for her name

Thanks for the advice, the 90° bend was absolutely no problem bending around corners along the countertops
