It was especially impressive in HvV since she had seen all the others - but she had never seen Russell play. She knew the kind of man he was and she knew this was her rival.

Sandra says Coach wants Russell out so that gives her a couple more days and enough time to extend her stay for the merge. Then she obviously backstabs Russell 2 times after the merge and yet he was too dumb to realize Sandra was a threat. Sandra even at one point openly says "I am against you Russell" 🤣🤣🤣. It is funny coming from a guy who thinks he has the best game out there how dumb he is and Sandra just love to play with his foolish mind. Queen stays Queen.

Truth I wish she stuck to this strategy in WAW and just let Denise go home but since her strategy has been heavily criticized by fans claiming she did nothing, I think it got to her and she got a case of big move-itus and didn’t want to let her idol go to waste w/o doing something with it and wanted an excuse to use it.
Regardless of how you feel about Sandra last two game plays it's still better than losing in the final tribal twice in a row and then being the first person voted out in their tribe twice in your last two playings (cough Russell cough).

The only saving grace for her, is that the idol expiries after that tribal anyway, so there's no point in saving it up. I wish she didn't get swap screwed on Game Changers, she was banging hard on that season.
PI is a top 10 victory IMO. She did exactly what Natalie Anderson did on SJDS, but people don't admit it because they are still bitter about Parvati and Russell losing... Sandra is that type of player that could win 5 times, and people would still deny how great of a player she is

Sandra is the only player to have her own category, actually. She is not anti-hero, villain, nor hero. She is a vigilante. I've always considered her a VIGILANTE. Sandra has beat Johnny FairPlay, Russell Hantzn, and Tony Vlachos. Let's not forget that this loud mouthed, in your face, "under the radar" player has been the only one successful at taking Tony out, even if it was against the tribe's best interest. Sandra is the only one who took out the other two time winner!

Right?? Just bc her game play is more fluid and is about having literally anybody else but her go home, doesn’t stop it from being good gameplay. Like, the point of the game is to survive and make it to the end, and she did just that. 😂 I also think a lot of people have a stereotypical ideology on what it means to be a champion/winner and Sandra doesn’t fall neatly in that box so people just have a hard time seeing/accepting her as the winner.

Villains as an argument could be made for Parvati, but I can’t think of any scenario where Lil winning Pearl Islands would be more satisfying than Sandra winning.

Wow I have never watched Sandra's first winning season and I definitely took for granted her social gameplay. She knows how people think, how people perceive her and how others are in the game. Using Peridiam's standards she is a Level 4 player. This was a great video and summary of Sandra's journey. I now understand why she's the queen.
I disagree with the assessment that her "I CAN GET LOUD TOO, WTF!" argument with Jonny was a "dumb" move. Fairplay, from the get-go was set up to be the big villain of the season. And her constantly bickering and arguing with FP helped her social game immensely. It made the other players deem her as "trustworthy" while she kept on (loudly) lying to their faces. It's the same game she played in HvV with her constant feuding with Russel.
HvV she was too often on the bottom to make moves which is why this is the case imo. She still played a great social game by trying to help the heroes at every turn when Russell and Parvati voted them out back to back, but her strategic game never blossomed due to poor plays from the heroes.

Jerri played a better social game than Parvati. I think she had a better chance of winning over Parvati. Sandra is an excellent social player. People keep on forgetting that Survivor is a social game. Sandra won twice without winning a single immunity challenge. Both Johnny FairPlay and Parvati recognized her social gameplay. It’s funny because I recognize Sandra gameplay from the get go. It’s a social game a lot of minorities play in our daily lives. As a huge Survivor fan, Pearl Islands will always be my favorite old school season. A Balboa buff hangs above my desk in my office, flanked by Jacaru from Amazon & Koror from Palau. Just a wonderfully themed season with one of the best casts ever. Would really like to see Burton play again....and in spite of Fans v Favorites I would vote for one more round of Fairplay too. When Sandra described Lill as an "unstoppable force" my mind went to Sandra being the immovable object and we were able to figure out which one wins with this season
I think doing anti-hero vs. villain is actually using future seasons to help decide. It looks like this season she was more of a hero (and thats how I remember it from back then, I thought I was confused about her being on villain tribe back in 20) I'd definitely say that season she was a hero, and she only became a villain because she was labeled as such.
I think maybe she was labeled as a villain because of her insensitivity when taking Morgan’s tarp, she had no sympathy for the grandma thing, she was a brash woman, she was willing to turn on anyone, and she had a take no prisoners attitude.
Honestly, Johnny telling the Morgan tribe how they deliberately lost that one immunity challenge was very stupid of him and overly cocky. He just 100% ASSUMED telling them that would break their spirits, he didn't stop to think of the other possibility in which telling them could ALSO motivate them to do better in the next immunity challenge, which is exactly what happened.

I was so disappointed Lil' won the final immunity. Would have been so much fun to see Fairplay and Sandra at the final council. I felt like those 2 were the only ones really playing the game at a high level this season anyway.
I just figured out that both 2-time winners, Sandra and Tony, both had spy bushes/shacks/nests. I guess its the best strategy no matter if you are a strategic or social or physical threat.
Agreed, I think Parvati is better . Sandra didn’t do much, you can say that was her strategy, but Parvati got to the end playing a HUGE game aswell. And her (Sandra’s) quit definitely soured her reputation.
I think she's a little overrated, her pearl island win wasn't that impressive even at the time people didn't think of her as that good of a winner, especially after her last two outings I think she's a great player but not on the level of Rob Tony Parv Cirie etc
She was on the villains tribe but I always saw her as an antihero as was said here. She's a "take no crap" kind of person, and she could fend for herself when it counted. Rob? He's a real villain.
Did Fairplay really lose the game because of that though. In a Final 4 of Darrah, Lil, Burton, Fairplay, Fairplay's only winning F2 is Lil. And he was going to take Burton if he had his way, and Burton was going to take him, and he loses to Burton. Lil was going to take Burton over Fairplay if she still won F3 immunity. I don't even see what Fairplay's possible win scenario is.
When I was watching this season I was a huge Rupert fan and was so bummed when he was voted out that I could not enjoy the rest especially the final three... And I just wasn't a big fan of Sandra... Now the good news is YOU came along and I grew up and here we are and I like Sandra and think she really did deserve to win it! Good job girl 💜 Thanks for these amazing memories 😘

Sandra has ALWAYS been my favorite, since the marketplace scene where she took over and communicated with the islanders. "Fairplay" was and still IS my least liked character. Sandra's reaction to Fairplay's idiocy entrenched her in my heart as my forever Survivor favorite. Personally, I don't see WHY or HOW Fairplay was selected for Survivor. He represents everything I dislike in competitors. There is something called "honor among thieves". Fairplay has NO HONOR in his soul. I see nothing funny about a person who is incapable of being honest. Sandra is an excellent player and demonstrated her ability as a SURVIVOR when she didn't dedicate herself to eliminating Fairplay, as I would have done if I played the Survivor Game!
Well, it's easy to see that Fairplay was selected because he makes for great TV, and honestly, seasons around this time (mostly Amazon and Pearl Island) finally broke the stereotype that players had where playing strategically makes you a bad person.. To me, Fairplay was a great Survivor player, got stuck at the end though and had no way to win, but he did his best. That doesn't mean I like him as a person, he seems quite difficult to bear, but he played a great game
She may not be the physically strongest but Sandra is a terrific social and strategic player. The Survivor Queen is emotionally intelligent and accurate in most of her predictions (e.g. She correctly predicted that Burton and Lillian would be the two players on The Outcasts who would return and replace Shawn and Osten.)
Its kinda funny because I used to think that her game this season wasn't very impressive until I rewatched the season and it definitely made me appreciate her game a lot more. She always did a great job of keeping the target off of her back even though she very easily could've been sent home very quickly after Rupert & Christa were. She's also a great character with tons of memorable moments and she has some amazing facial expressions that crack me up all the time (Fairplay has a lot of great facial expressions too so this season had itself lucky).
Very interesting all the back stories flushed out. I would have liked to hear her strategy for willing to sit out challenges. My take on her sitting out is a way to take a target off her back as a "tough competitor" in the challenges. I see her as a wise cookie when it is do or die and a strike while the iron is hot type of intuitiveness; she is a Wise woman. I would imagine to play a similar game except to excel in the challenges. Excelling in challenges is by the grace of God.
She was screwed either way, as Denise already had another idol, but while giving Denise her idol, she could’ve convinced Denise that she had her own idol that she would play as well. Would’ve saved her in WaW and at the same time Tony would’ve been out. He’d possibly win an EOE challenge tho.
Once Upon An Island I’m just reflecting on her later gameplay, since it is about Sandra after all, and there are comments about how she was as a player in later seasons
I love her just because she won the first season filmed in my country😂also happy that the second person to win a season filmed in my country was the person I wanted to win in Aras. So they both rock for me hahahaha

Sandra fighting with Fairplay wasn’t that dumb. She already had Christia, Rupert and Trish on her side at that point. She was in a good spot. Of course even if she was in a bad spot Sandra would have yelled. It’s what she’s good at.
Lil and her holier than thou bullshit about boyscouts was horrible and her acting indignant about how the game is played while doing the exact same thing makes her an all timer as far as not being well liked.

To me this video serves primarily to point out how overrated she really is as a Survivor contestant. I was expecting her build some crucial social connections (like with the Tina Wesson video) or perform some strategic brilliance that I had missed, when watching the season a few years ago, but there was neither. She really only won thanks to not being the main target for any vote and by being less terrible than Lillian at the final tribal council. She wasn’t a great strategist, because she was off the loop (or at least not orchestrating them or voting with the majority) for many of the most important strategic moves of the season, such as voting off Rupert. Her social game also doesn’t come accross as particularly great in this video. Her appearance on Heroes vs Villains was quite similar albeit the context of being surrounded by an All-Star cast and having to go against Parvati at the final tribal council makes that victory more impressive. Although even that season her main strategic plan was planning to take out Russell, who nevertheless took her to the final three and whos unlikability was a main reason to her winning. While she does deserve praise for being able to win twice and it that fact does validate her main modus operandi of staying under the radar, ”as long as it is not me” approach as a good strategy for winning Survivor, as a Survivor contestant the ”queen” is greatly overpraised.

If you haven't seen Pearl Islands in its entirety, I highly recommend it. I have it No. 1 on my list of all-newbie seasons.

I was so disappointed Lil' won the final immunity. Would have been so much fun to see Fairplay and Sandra at the final council. I felt like those 2 were the only ones really playing the game at a high level this season anyway.

I just figured out that both 2-time winners, Sandra and Tony, both had spy bushes/shacks/nests. I guess its the best strategy no matter if you are a strategic or social or physical threat.

Overrated In my humble opinion. She didnt even do anything in Heroes vs Villains besides get coach out. The real queen is Parvati.
Agreed, I think Parvati is better . Sandra didn’t do much, you can say that was her strategy, but Parvati got to the end playing a HUGE game aswell. And her (Sandra’s) quit definitely soured her reputation.
I think she's a little overrated, her pearl island win wasn't that impressive even at the time people didn't think of her as that good of a winner, especially after her last two outings I think she's a great player but not on the level of Rob Tony Parv Cirie etc
Sandra didn't need many confessional as I think lot of her tribal council anwsers and conversation showed her personallity really well.
She was on the villains tribe but I always saw her as an antihero as was said here. She's a "take no crap" kind of person, and she could fend for herself when it counted. Rob? He's a real villain.

Did Fairplay really lose the game because of that though. In a Final 4 of Darrah, Lil, Burton, Fairplay, Fairplay's only winning F2 is Lil. And he was going to take Burton if he had his way, and Burton was going to take him, and he loses to Burton. Lil was going to take Burton over Fairplay if she still won F3 immunity. I don't even see what Fairplay's possible win scenario is.
She should really return for another chance at the game! I think she could totally be a 2 time winner as an under the radar player

When I was watching this season I was a huge Rupert fan and was so bummed when he was voted out that I could not enjoy the rest especially the final three... And I just wasn't a big fan of Sandra... Now the good news is YOU came along and I grew up and here we are and I like Sandra and think she really did deserve to win it!

Sandra has ALWAYS been my favorite, since the marketplace scene where she took over and communicated with the islanders. "Fairplay" was and still IS my least liked character. Sandra's reaction to Fairplay's idiocy entrenched her in my heart as my forever Survivor favorite. Personally, I don't see WHY or HOW Fairplay was selected for Survivor. He represents everything I dislike in competitors. There is something called "honor among thieves". Fairplay has NO HONOR in his soul. I see nothing funny about a person who is incapable of being honest. Sandra is an excellent player and demonstrated her ability as a SURVIVOR when she didn't dedicate herself to eliminating Fairplay, as I would have done if I played the Survivor Game!
Well, it's easy to see that Fairplay was selected because he makes for great TV, and honestly, seasons around this time (mostly Amazon and Pearl Island) finally broke the stereotype that players had where playing strategically makes you a bad person.. To me, Fairplay was a great Survivor player, got stuck at the end though and had no way to win, but he did his best. That doesn't mean I like him as a person, he seems quite difficult to bear, but he played a great game
The fact that you still hate him just goes to show how perfect his casting was! Lol
She may not be the physically strongest but Sandra is a terrific social and strategic player. The Survivor Queen is emotionally intelligent and accurate in most of her predictions (e.g. She correctly predicted that Burton and Lillian would be the two players on The Outcasts who would return and replace Shawn and Osten.)
Its kinda funny because I used to think that her game this season wasn't very impressive until I rewatched the season and it definitely made me appreciate her game a lot more. She always did a great job of keeping the target off of her back even though she very easily could've been sent home very quickly after Rupert & Christa were. She's also a great character with tons of memorable moments and she has some amazing facial expressions that crack me up all the time (Fairplay has a lot of great facial expressions too so this season had itself lucky).
Sandra was almost the first winner to play a perfect game.

Very interesting all the back stories flushed out. I would have liked to hear her strategy for willing to sit out challenges. My take on her sitting out is a way to take a target off her back as a "tough competitor" in the challenges. I see her as a wise cookie when it is do or die and a strike while the iron is hot type of intuitiveness; she is a Wise woman. I would imagine to play a similar game except to excel in the challenges. Excelling in challenges is by the grace of God.

She was screwed either way, as Denise already had another idol, but while giving Denise her idol, she could’ve convinced Denise that she had her own idol that she would play as well. Would’ve saved her in WaW and at the same time Tony would’ve been out. He’d possibly win an EOE challenge tho.

Sandra fighting with Fairplay wasn’t that dumb. She already had Christia, Rupert and Trish on her side at that point. She was in a good spot. Of course even if she was in a bad spot Sandra would have yelled. It’s what she’s good at.

I believe anti-heroes are perceived as villains by the casual audience so it makes sense.

Queen Stays Queen....Adios!
To me this video serves primarily to point out how overrated she really is as a Survivor contestant. I was expecting her build some crucial social connections (like with the Tina Wesson video) or perform some strategic brilliance that I had missed, when watching the season a few years ago, but there was neither. She really only won thanks to not being the main target for any vote and by being less terrible than Lillian at the final tribal council. She wasn’t a great strategist, because she was off the loop (or at least not orchestrating them or voting with the majority) for many of the most important strategic moves of the season, such as voting off Rupert. Her social game also doesn’t come accross as particularly great in this video. Her appearance on Heroes vs Villains was quite similar albeit the context of being surrounded by an All-Star cast and having to go against Parvati at the final tribal council makes that victory more impressive. Although even that season her main strategic plan was planning to take out Russell, who nevertheless took her to the final three and whos unlikability was a main reason to her winning. While she does deserve praise for being able to win twice and it that fact does validate her main modus operandi of staying under the radar, ”as long as it is not me” approach as a good strategy for winning Survivor, as a Survivor contestant the ”queen” is greatly overpraised.
Her final 5 move against Fairplay and Burton was brilliant.
I did not like Sandra her first season. After I watched the episodes again, I now love Sandra.
