This video features an 1851 navy sheriffs model replica by Armi San Marcos. Overall impressions of the shorter barrel length is good, it handles well and with lower charges it still packs a punch. Thanks for watching!

Nice looking cases you made!
I watch you shoot and notice you got a pretty steady hand.
I used to have a steady hand but that was quit a few moons ago, now I put an old refrigerator about 10 paces
And I'm lucky to hit the door!
Well...maybe not quite that bad.....
Enjoy your down to earth, no BS videos!
I enjoy shooting single action revolvers the most, and practice the one-hand thing primarily. Glad you enjoy the content, thanks for tuning in!
Awesome 36 caliber. I like the short barrel on it, looks good. Thanks for sharing.
I do too, it was a pleasure to shoot!
Well done Black Powder Shooter 44!
That is one handsome revolver with a much needed taller front sight.
Yes indeed whoever put that front sight on , did an outstanding job!
Taller front sights are needed on all Colt open top percussion revolvers.
As well as deepening, enlargement of the Rear Hammer Sight.
Such modifications of adding taller front sights & deepening, opening up rear Hammer sights are needed In order to acheive point of Aim accuracy especially with use of conical bullets such as my Universal Bullets. In all open top Colt percussion revolvers.
It has been said that Samuel Colt himself had taller front sights on his own personal carry revolvers.
The use of a "Slix Hand" , does greatly help in field with loading of revolvers with shorter leangth loading levers.
Keep up the good work- Videos coming. Safe Journeys and Best Wishes!
I agree Kaido, thanks for stopping by!
Great video my friend!! I love shooting those old cap and ball revolvers!
Thank you! Can't beat a fall day on the range with one of these revolvers
Looks like some really nice of revolver cases, Nice looking revolver look like it did well.
Thanks, I appreciate it. It was a good shooter
Looks like great fun my friend. Thanks for the fun video
Absolutely, thanks for watching!
yes, I'd second this .. thanks for sharing the fun at your range. *LIKED* the video --LT
Nice revolver, especially like the front sight.
I like the case color on the frame. I have an 1851 that i removed the original pietta frame coloring and then completely blued it. Great video man
I wonder if rebluing the frame makes for a more durable finish? Leaves less exposed unfinished steel I would guess. Thanks for watching!
Fun shooter. I have a few Remington Sheriff Model guns and enjoy them.
These shooter barreled are a lot of fun. Thanks for watching
@@blackpowdershooter44 absolutely. If you want, I have videos of me shooting both my Pietta Remington Cap and Ball Sheriff Revolvers and my Cimarron Sheriff Remington 45 Colt Conversion Remingtons
Nice little revolver, thanks for sharing :)
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
I was looking up ASM guns like this one because I started watching a new TV show called Walker Independence and in it the lead character woman has an 1851 with the shorter barrel 5.5". You can clearly see the mfg. markings. On the right side of the barrel flat (not down lower where yours is) it is marked ASM Black Powder Only 36 Cal. Made In Italy. Pretty sure they didn't have Italian clones back in the 1800's lol. Also the short barrel as far as I know was never a factory standard offering but Colt probably did some special orders like this. I noticed yours doesn't have the "A" in ASM. If it does I couldn't see it. Interesting stuff.
Interesting that they were using an ASM in the show. This one looks like it was an aftermarket job; I think the previous owner cut down the barrel himself. Fun little revolver.
Looks like a nice little revolver. I happen to be missing a .36 in my collection at the moment, think I need to do something about that...
I agree! lol. It was a good shooter.
Someone did a jam up job on that booger. Would love to have another Army San Marcos. They were pretty well built.
I agree, and the quality seemed to be pretty good as well.
Still waiting on the sheriff model box for my 1858 if u ever make it I’ll deff picking 1 up
Ok thanks! If I make one, I will let you know!
With that dove tailed front sight you can tap it over and set it for your windage. And with how tall it is you can file the sight down to raise your elevation. As far as some of the other stuff I would suggest shooting it historically. Projectile, powder, percussion cap. You dont need wads or grease etc. That just soaks into the powder and causes inconsistent powder charges.
Nice pistol. The shorter barrels do make them more comfortable to carry. I really like the front sight on that pistol compared to the bead or fixed blade on other models.
The front sight aftermarket job works very well with this revolver, shoots POA at 10-15 yards instead of way high.
@@blackpowdershooter44 Yeah, I wish you could order them that way.
I just picked up one but with the fluted barrel And is a factory sheriff model Ill have to blast some caps tomorrow as the timing was off
I like the look of the 1860 series with the streamlined look, enjoy!
Mine is a 1851 with a fluted cylinder.
@@drmachinewerke1 Oh gotcha.
Nice. I just ordered a Pietta 1851 Sheriff in .44. Anything BP is getting hard to find and the prices have gone up on them as well. Bummmer.
I agree, the prices have gone up on black powder guns and accessories over the past year. It is unfortunate.
Nice. The barrel looks big in diameter for a 1851 Navy. Shoots good though. I have a 1851 ASM sheriff's model but it's a brass frame and in 44 caliber.
I got the pietta, 44, 35 grains. A nice satisfying BOOM!!!
I thought it's a big three were the only ones making cap and ball revolvers myself but I found that Traditions is also making them
Traditions imports the Pietta made guns, just like Cimarron imports some Uberti made guns. Not sure if Traditions hand picks the higher quality Pietta replicas, I would assume not though. Thanks for watching!
Cool how with the long range shots and black powder, you can see the bullet trace all the way down range.
Thanks for watching!
Good looking revolver. Wonder if conical bullets would be more accurate.
It's possible, but with the shorter barrel I wonder how much of a difference it would make. Thanks for watching!
I could never quite get behind these Sheriff's models, though I am pretty sure someone, somewhere cut down their gun to that length. I still think the 7.5 inch Navy has the perfect balance.
I like both, but I will say I did enjoy shooting this gun with the shorter barrel length. The front sight helped it shot POA at 10-15 yards too, which didn't seem right for a Colt lol.
I have a brass navy with bad pitting ( from the factory casting ) in the trigger guard ( grip area) . bought it for 50.00 20 + years ago . I cut it down about 6-7 years ago . May ( Uberti London ) cut one down to 6"
i do not see a brass frame as collector items
And I agree the factory length is fairly well balanced .
Hey Nice vidéo thanks for that !
I have the same model And I’m struggling to pull off the barrel… any suggestions ?
Hey bud I just got me a Pietta 1851 44. And I was just trying to see what size caps did you fine that works best for you cause am new to all of this and I don't want my caps to fall off of it.
I like Remington #10's the best. I have had bad experiences with CCI #10's as they're a little undersized and have not fit 95% of the cap and ball revolvers I've shot.
Pretty cool little gun ,well it's not all that little but Pretty cool stuff mate
Glad you enjoyed it. I guess you can say it is little compared to other full size black powder revolvers, lol!
Hello. Just tried to look at your website for a Dragoon i have but nothing came up. Video is a yr old. Was wondering if you still making cases and if so how much. Thank you.
Hi Gary, unfortunately the boxes are out of stock at the moment. When they are available again, I will link them in my newest video. Thanks for watching!
@@blackpowdershooter44 hopefully soon. Thank You.
You're supposed to get a ring of lead every time you load the ball to ensure tight fit
I'm aware
Does anyone out here know where I can buy a 1863 pocket revolver?
I've been trying for months to get one, and it seems every cap and ball online retailer is completely wiped out.
If anyone knows anything, please respond!!! Thanks!
These boxes are awesome!
I gotta keep my guns in a safe with a trigger lock because I got 2 little ones, but they are great.
I really enjoy your videos...thanks for your work.
I appreciate it, thanks!
As far as an 1863 Pocket revolver; I spoke with EMF a few months ago and they said they get them in limited quantities every few months. I would check GunBroker, they come up for sale over there from time to time.
I always use 30 grain fff in my 36 cal 1851s. Much more accuracy.
I have difficulty fitting 30 grains FFFG in my .36's, what powder do you use?
@@blackpowdershooter44 Hodgdon Pyrodex P the FFFG equivalent in a 2016 Pietta 1858 Navy 36 cal with a wonderwad and .375" round ball and there is still room for more. I can actually get more powder in the 36 than my 44s.
A small piece of PVC pipe slipped over the loading lever would make it much easier, and wouldn't scratch it.
Agreed! A piece of conduit helps for loading. I've used the 'slix-hand' as a loading lever extension before and it was helpful for the shorter barreled revolvers.
Pedersoli makes a BEAUTIFUL very expensive Remington New Model Army lol
Think it's $1600
You can get a real one for 200 to 400 more lol
