When I was in 8th grade Tupac was my fav artist I wrote to his mother Afeni Shakur around my 8th grade graduation and to my surprise she actually wrote me back in her own handwriting and sent me a bunch of memorabilia a poster, a t shirt and even had a personal return address on the letter even his mother was such a kind sweet woman who really cared about the youth everywhere Rest In Peace to both Tupac and Afeni Shakur 🙏🏿

Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mom, was a notable Black Panther in the late 60s and 70s. Super interesting woman in her own right, not to mention raising one of the most famous and influential musical artists of all time.
They tried to destroy her, like many other Panthers. The coke epidemic hit the Black community so hard on purpose.
She went through hell because she fought against the injustices of the system for black people. She won her case in NYC and she was blacklisted afterwards that's why she moved around and eventually sent Tupac to Los Angeles. There are lots of black women who went through some of the same things as his mom went through.
What is Black Panther? A gang?
The black panther organization was never a gang fool but the Ku Klux Klan were white terrorist used by the United States Government to kill black people especially white southern leaders and they were satanist.

That last “Dear Mama” was almost like an admission of “now I know what you were trying to teach me and I should have listened.” 😢 this is my absolute favorite Tupac song.

My biological dad and I never met. He died when I was 12 and that line “my anger wouldn’t let me feel for a stranger”, it also resonated with me, as a teenager making bad decisions and watching my mom struggle with addiction. RIP Tupac, and RIP Mom

Tupacs father is alive. His lyrics aren’t entirely his perspective but that of many people who live in the “ghetto”. The genius of Tupac is that he wrote lyrics like story telling. He felt it was his duty to tell the story and humanize black people when they were most demonized in the 90s media.
Afeni lied to pac and he was extremely angry at her, about her telling him his father died, at the time pac really believed his father was dead
6:25 The part of him talking about his dad, how he died.. Pac's dad actually didn't die. I think his mom told him that just so her son could move on better and give it a better place. But when Pac got shot, his biological father actually came to the hospital to see him. They did DNA tests and it turned out to be his dad. He even has an interview on RUclips somewhere.. Pac said he would acknowlegde his dad and bond with him, but his stepfather would always be his father to him. Just some inside info..
It’s like he witnessed all the good things his mother was able to do and provide for him that she struggled to provide for herself and he added to it at times and is in awe of power of a mothers love
Brenda's got a baby is a song you need to check out by 2pac. It's crazy how a song written back in the early 90's still is relevant today.

I'll give you background; Afeni-Pac's mother struggled with addiction until her end. She & Pac were estranged for years. She tossed Pac out on the streets young because she wanted her lifestyle with no interference. It wasn't until Pac sought her out, once hitting notoriety, to reconcile, & place her in rehab, when he saw she was spiraling downward. Pac suffered greatly being tossed in & out of facilities & "family"~learning to survive with the criminals; hustlers, gangs, prostitutes, drugs & violence. His life only fell apart when his mother decided not to be one. Yet, that still never changed Pac's heart; he became & remained one of the most respectful towards women, which always amazed me, because his surroundings were opposite of that, & he had no father figure, other than the street boys. I was always so proud of Pac being a survivor, & being so strong willed & determined to get out of the life he was tossed into. He truly had The Hand of God upon Him. There will never be another Pac, & the music world has been trying to catch up to him for over 30 years.
Pac was wise beyond his years, & intellectual. He honestly schooled himself through books, & poetry. He was prophetic, fierce & truthful, which always made him have a target on his back. His talent was threatening to most, yet he was hated as much as he was admired.
He was a great friend, lil brother & mentor. He truly cared about changing the mindset of the ghetto cycles. He had an ingenious mind, & he was so chill & funny. Pac was a jokester!
I miss our times with our late night fast food runs or our Pepsi & donuts. I can still hear his squeaky-giggle laugh. If he loved you, he loved you for life & became your protector. He was taken-out way too soon! & it never should have happened! Missing My Handsome Caramel Chunk of Pie. 🍩 ❤

This is the truth. Single black mothers work hard, instill the importance of education, cook and care for their children. All while being short changed in society, looked over for promotion and being blamed for the father's absence. Sometimes a dab of this or smoke of that is used to escape. There is often codependency, addiction to the point of incapability to work is less common. Children being taken away is usually what leads to full blown addiction.
Definitely more! The man was a genius, different to rap music these days , it was real stories, and he really wanted to change the way things were . Changes , unconditional love ,keep your head up and Brenda’s got a baby are all songs you should look at

When I was in prison, Mama was there still. Dear Mama, there’s no way I could pay you back. You are appreciated. Lived this.
This song has always been about understanding, acknowledgement, and forgiveness to me. As we get older and begin to heal and process the impact of our early attachments, we are able to see our parents as multidimensional humans, rather than just through the lens of how they hurt or failed us when we needed them the most. The trauma: dysfunctions, failures, neglect and abuse from our parents are the cyclical consequences of their own traumas. There are added layers being a black woman, raising a black son in America.
When he references her substance abuse, he’s saying he sees her in all her dimensions and she isn’t lesser for it in his eyes. She was a person, struggling with her own unhealed pain but she still chose her children everyday and showed up for them in the ways that she could. Anyway, that’s my very condensed takeaway. It’s super telling about his own healing, empathy, and self-awareness.
Bro, Tupac is the greatest rapper of all time. With him being a ghost, nobody alive will ever be able to touch him. His mother was a black panther and was in jail over some actions by the black panthers. Tupac had the lineage, drive and desire to really make a difference in the world and it is one of the many reasons he was killed. Look into the idea of CoinTelPro and extrapolate that idea into the mid 90s
She wasn't just a Black Panther but a leader, and she was arrested and jailed with 20 other party members. She represented herself at trial and proved the charges against them were a government conspiracy. All the charges were dropped and she was released a month before Pac was born.

Tupac was Afeni's son. he was like the prince of the Panthers and the whole world's eyes were on him. he had a massive amount of mindshare, support, and momentum. they killed every other Black leader that managed to generate a popular movement from MLK to Fred, do we really think they wouldn't hit Pac? of course they would. the fact that the pieces were in place to have it happen by someone else's hand was a bonus for them, they just had to massage the situation.

A lot of it was media told. You need 2 listen 2 more of his music, and watch his interviews. You will be surprised at this legendary genius. His father did come back n2 his life after he was shot da 1st time. They got 2 know each other, but his mom was his ride or die. I love ❤️ and miss this man so much. His mom get sober, and she was there 4 her kids.

He did an interview when he was in high school, only 17, and it really gives you a glimpse into the relationship he had with his mother and it shows how wise beyond his years he was. such a good watch
side note: tupac’s duality is one of the most interesting things to me, one side is the tough macho man (hit ‘em up) then there’s the softer compassionate side (dear mama, brenda’s got a baby) and even the medium that is hail mary (and many others)

Keep ya head up is a great song by him. This song was my son's song to me and it hit home in so many ways when he told me this. Love the song. Bitter sweet meaning.

Watch 2Pac Documentary it’s called Tupac Resurrection. He tells his whole story in his own words. That was 2Pac that got shot. It’s in the documentary. 2Pac also made 7 movies within 7 years of his fame.

Tupac is at the top of my top five favorite lyrics...sad that his lyrics didn't resonate enough with the father's...that they aren't willing to become Dad's... Tupac’s mother Afeni was an absolutely remarkable woman. I do hope you delve a little more into both her back ground including her involvement with the Black Panthers, and Tupac’s early years steeped in literature, poetry, dance, and other arts.
I visited the Tupac exhibit “Wake Me When I’m Free” in L.A. last year, it was amazing. One of my favorite pieces was a note Afeni wrote to Tupac:
“Tupac - please find meaning in the greatness of cleaning and responsibility etc. This room is a pig sty. I will not accept it. - AF”
Father Time on Kendricks new album talks about the difficult relationship between a father and son. Mother I sober on the same album talks about generational curses as it relates to sexual abuse. Both would be amazing reactions from you🙏

Remember seeing an interview with Tupac and he said when he would get in trouble his punishments a lot of times were to read and write a report to his mom about what he read and learned. My mother did the same for us and I am grateful

This is an "arena" that is way deeper and way more complex than you can ever imagine. If you think you are up to it, I'd love to see you explore more Tupac. But to fully comprehend Tupac you have to go beyond the music. There are documentaries, his poems, his interviews, learning about the Black Panther Party and his mom's life and experiences, that are all necessary to better grasp the phenomenon that is Tupac. Being that you are a psychotherapist, one song I would recommend is SO MANY TEARS. Although it's a good song, it's not necessarily one of my favorites, but there is a DEFINITE mental health issue theme to it.

She was a Black Panther, her way of helping herself and community in a society she didn't understand how it worked. His punishments were often to read the Times Newspaper from front to back. He was extremely insightful and creative.
I'm also a fan of 2upc that his words find lessons that made me listen to hip-hop and also his words enter the depths of mind and will remain a legend in our hearts forever.

I'd suggest watching Lecrae's 'Heros and Villains' Tedtalk since it gives some decent insight into how rap went from Run DMC type rap to the 90s rap. He also touches on the idea that it was the music of a generation of men without fathers.

Coming back to listen a year later. I hope you do even more Tupac songs. Dear Mama was an excellent song to start with to begin to know Tupac. He was the first rapper to write a song in reverence to his mother, despite her mistakes, and to show her appreciation for the good she did for him. The only other rapper to write a song about their mother was Eminem(which you have reacted to and I loved it🥰) I don't know if you know this , but in the Dear Mama video, the lady in the beginning and throughout WAS TUPAC'S MOM , Afeni Shakur!! She passed away in 2016, but helped establish his estate and foundation to keep his legacy going before she passed. Also, in the end of the video, the man that looked shot on the stretcher was about him. He was shot 5 times at Quad City Studios in NY , when men tried to rob him. He clearly survived this but it sparked alot of issues between him and Puffy and Biggie. He believed they knew he would be set up that night. This started the whole East Coast West Coast division/feud which eventually led to Tupac and Biggie being killed. That is a rabbit whole for you to go down when you have time to watch videos and interviews. Vlad and Art of Dialogue on YT have interviewed people that speak on alot that went on then. But for YOU just getting to know him and his loving, intelligent, compassionate side .... I would listen to Keep Ya Head Up( about respect for women and single moms), Unconditional Love, Letter to my Unborn Child, Until the End of Time. You have already done Dear Mama and Brenda's Got a Baby which are excellent songs to show his uniqueness, articulation, reverence for women, and compassion for important issues. I will say, Tupac was not in this video because he was incarcerated. Again this goes back to the rabbit whole with who was involved with the set up at Quad City Studios and the alleged (set up, fabrication) of a rape case. He was not actually charged with rape because there was no evidence because it didn't happen. There were people trying to destroy him. But like I said that is a rabbit whole. For now, the songs I suggested will give you and idea of who he was and then you would know there was no way he would harm a women, especially being raised by a single mom and having a sister to protect.

Read his whole life story on the internet or whatever you find on his whole life.. you will be both sad and AMAZED simultaneously. You’re going to be so caught off guard at his come up and what he accomplished in the amount of time he did.

This video was actually recorded and put together by his estate after his death. He was shot in Vegas and died six days later on my 4th birthday. Every year for 26 years now on my birthday it’s 24 hours of Tupac all over tv telling his entire life story.
I think you're thinking of "changes". This was off his third album, he was in jail after getting shot the first time, not dead.
“Dear Mama” is from his third studio album, “Me Against the World”. It was released on February 21, 1995, as the lead single from the album. Shakur passed on September 13, 1996. Shakur does not appear in the video in any real capacity because he was serving his four-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
