Lowering brightness, and raising blackpoint, has been useful, since the raw photos usually come out bright and hazy, in the city.

Astrophotography benefits from stacking images to enhance the captured light. From any camera.
I don't really think mobile cameras can be compared to a single lens camera system alas like you say they have come a long way.

why are the pictures so blurry? I took astrophotos on my old Pixel 5, even before I bought the pixel 8p, and on it the milky way and stars were much better, it's strange that the 15 pro shows the level of the ultra wide angle pixel 8 pro camera in astrophotos. I'm a long time non-apple user, can you tell me if the iPhone doesn't move the sensor following star movement on long shutter speeds and actually need to use a special tripod with correction?

I will have to give that a try! We have mountains about 1 1/2 hours from where I live outside of Washington DC, which is a great place for stargazing! Unfortunately, while my Galaxy s21 Ultra gets good to great photos of the Moon, whether at 25X to match the iPhone 15 Pro Max or up to 100X, my new 15 Pro Max generally cannot even focus on the Moon, showing only a blob. I expected smaller Moon shots without as much detail as the Galaxy, but the iPhone cannot handle the contrast of a dark sky and bright Moon. Hope Applae fixes this with the 16.

There is no fixing needed, you are using auto mode and auto tries to expose for the blacks around to get more detail. Use a manual mode and expose for the moon yourself. For planned shots manual mode will always without fail outperform auto, no matter what camera you are using.

Not sure if iphone can take astrophotos properly. There's an app called astrocam on Androids (only, i guess). This let's you shoot astroshots sequentially which you can then use with sequator in RAW, then do the lightroom magic. I did the same with my xiaomi mi 9 (2019) and got a bloody awesome milkyway shot and a few starlink passes (actually mutliples, from a place called Thomaplatz in Starnberg, Germany) from under a bortle 4 sky. If you actually went to a bortle sky below 4, then it should be even better given the newer hardware in Iphone than Mi 9. I wonder of there is a similar app like intervalometer or astrocam for iphones. Give it a shot, if any.
