With your light painting techniques, I have been able to have a nice foreground with the galactic core above, although, some clouds cover part of the photo, its always cloudy here

I bet you the reason there’s no star trails is because the night mode shooting is already expecting the person to be holding the phone in their hand so it’s programmatically compensating for motion. But instead of handheld shake it’s just canceling out the star movements
I recently learned that the image stack!! When you take a 30s exposure - the iPhone takes 3, 10s exposure shots and stack them to get rid of the star trails! I learned this from Ian Lauer

I got some amazing shots just messing around tonight, just got my 15 pro max today. The number one thing I did with my s22 ultra and previous s20 ultra was astrophotography. I’m super glad the iPhone can do it well too

These came out pretty spectacular I must admit. Definitely will have to try this in the future. As an add on tip with using the speedlights to freeze the trees, keeping the power to 1/8 or less is the absolute key. The goal is to have the shortest flash duration possible. Cheers. 🍻
Hi, how do you trigger the speedlight from the iPhone? Is this a special speedlight that can take bluetooth signal from the iphone or something? I am going to Alaska to see the norther lights and would like to be able to take photos with my iPhone with Norther Lights in the background and would like to be able to flash to see mine and my wife's faces in the foreground. I wish they would add this software update to the 14Pro iPhones, the hardware is the exact same (besides the telephoto camera on the Pro Max). I have the 14Pro and not planning on upgrading, waiting until next year.

My S23U and 15PM were basically the same price. I think every phone has issues at some point. Personally havent had the over heating issue. But did see there was already an update to fix it. I also have that bloody horrid issue with ExpertRAW on the S23U. Been that way for a few months now. Still no fix. Ive also never broken a screen on an iPhone. Have broken the screen on a pixel and on S22U. Every phone has positives and negatives.
They might have outdated technology, but somehow still run better than every Android phone on the market. I'm telling you, you don't find a better optimized phone than Apple. Thats a fact.@@RaoulRamsaran

So if you use ProRaw for star photos does it look better than without even though it only shoots in 12MP when using night mode? You mention it's using pixel binding. I will try that next time, I always kept it off because I didnt think it would do anything good since it defaults to 12MP at night with ProRaw and night mode.
For 30s setting dilemma. To work you need to have the phone on a tripod or something very steady. Any slight movement of the phone will reduce time to 10s
I'm going to Boliva in January and I'm going to be in the salt flats in the night. I want to get some good shots of the sky after failing spectacularly in the Amazon. I'm going to be at high altitude, flat land and complete darkness - do I need anything other than my iPhone 15 pro max? And these settings are all I need?
Hey I’ve found something you might be interested in! 💡 A few videos back you were making star trails but the app made the quality worse.. Since then I’ve found a solution which is very good but also takes some setup time: Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control > Turn it on Make a recording that says “12” (or the number you get for the shutter button in the camera app) every ≈40 seconds, for whatever period you would like it to be Let the audio play on a different device Set the iPhone up to your likings and make sure Voice Control is turned on Play the audio and once every 40 seconds it will automatically “press” the shutter button which will result in a great interval camera but without quality loss

I have to buy all of the phones I use. Becomes too expensive to get multiples of the same generation sorry. In this case, the 14Pro Max videos I have done will give you the same results as the regular 15
Yup, I must agree, the best iPhone so far for night shots. Even when you do hand held shots it magically can combine it. I guess it takes advantage from the 48mpx photo, so it can crop and process it into 24 mpx RAW combined from multiple shots. I think it could do even better with its computing power.
Any advice how to make this automatic so can stitch together a video? For instance, auto take every 30 seconds for 1 hour? Is there like an intervalometer?
I wish! But no. There is an App called Even Longer. It is the best when it comes to this. It has an in build intervalometer and manual controls. The results are good, just not quite as good as the camera app. Its really not what it was designed for, but it does a good job.
@@ShayneMostyn maybe I can write something. The first thing that comes to mind is using the app to control the iPhone 15 pro. So maybe an older iOS device or android. Then it sends a Bluetooth trigger to iPhone 15 every so often.

Pixel has its place. The sky is almost as good as a pixel I would say. The foreground on Pixels is not nearly as good as this.
Hard to do anything wrong on a pixel though mate. Put it on a tripod and push the button.

Has to be complete darkness or you will only get 10sec

Absolutely no settings besides RAW on. Nothing else. Its automatic which will be 12MP
I did a few 30 sec shots with Main and 5X cameras. No trailing, some star blur at pixel-peeping level that's all... Exciting! :)

Switch to samsung buddy. The iphones are crazy expensive, have very outdated technology and a lot of problems like overheating, breaking glass etc

What is the button/setting at 2:05 above the night mode button the left. It looks like a dial with a 0 on it. I have never seen that in my app.

Very nice image! Is the 30s limited to iOS17 or to the iPhone15? Pretty much the same sensors, shouldn´t be difficult to implement in 14Pro, too.
its not limited to the 15, even the 13 can do this
Every iPhone back to the 11 can do this. It just gets better every year. I think it will be limited to the processor.

Havet used astro shader. Nocturne is ok for older phones. I havent found an app that does a better job then the camera app for this sort of pic.

Not cropping, it uses pixel binning to do this.
@@ShayneMostyn yes, in good light, but not to correct hand held shots in low light. It needs to crop (correct the movement) and combine it.

3x10s exposures and they've stacked them in the phone, rather than 1 30s exposure? That'd kill the trails pretty well.

Has anyone combined one with a telescope? Wonder what results that would give.
Any advice how to make this automatic so can stitch together a video? For instance, auto take every 30 seconds for 1 hour? Is there like an intervalometer?
I wish! But no. There is an App called Even Longer. It is the best when it comes to this. It has an in build intervalometer and manual controls. The results are good, just not quite as good as the camera app. Its really not what it was designed for, but it does a good job.
@@ShayneMostyn maybe I can write something. The first thing that comes to mind is using the app to control the iPhone 15 pro. So maybe an older iOS device or android. Then it sends a Bluetooth trigger to iPhone 15 every so often.
