I was just playing the "box" shape at the 3rd fret of the A and 8th fret of the E strings. I added some quick walk ups from the 3rd of the scale. It didn't sound awful.

F dorian is just C minor so the only difference between F and C dorian is the raised 6th. If you're careful with how you play the 6th so it doesnt clash when the major 4th chord plays, it can work, theres no hard and fast rule about what notes you have to play, but the home tone is clearly C so it's not "in" F dorian as the OP suggested
