@@ZoroHayoung yes and no. The true definition of democracy is that the leaders respond to the will of the people. However what Trumbo was trying to convey here is that America twisted the definition to use it as an excuse to go to war. That said Dalton Trumbo is a known communist (one of the few I do respect but still...), so take his views with a grain of salt. Democracy: the 51% get to do whatever the fuck they want to the 49%. A constitutional republic may not be perfect, but it's the best thing that our species has ever devised so far. It is unfortunate that a two party system has been running against the people year after year. And the people root and cheer for megalomaniacs as if they were players on their favorite football team.

Nice speech and all but it doesn’t solve the problem. It just means the old fight the wars and not the young. Substituting one generation for another doesn’t stop the wars.
Dalton Trumbo was a Marxist and he wrote this anti-war classic while Britian and Poland were fighting for their lives and shortly before the Soviet Union was invaded. Literally overnight in June 1941 Marxist pacifists became fierce hawks only to save Stalin. Of course, the moment Stalin was safe in May 1945 they went back to being "pacifists". Trumbo who was later blacklisted in the 1950's actually named names first in 1942 by turning in principled pacifists of the left and right to the FBI after they requested his novel and his support. He went from the horror and torment of this novel to writing the romantic comedy film "A Guy Named Joe" about an airman who was jaunty, cocky and confident in death. In the war years he did his best to have young men join up and fight to save Stalin. Trumbo was a genius, but his politics was dishonest and deceptive. He had contempt for democracy and favored a Communist dictatorship. By the 1960's and 70's the oddball old man was free to seduce a new and deeply credulous generation.
It's so hard to read from a book like that and make it sound as if it is your own truth. Talented man.
Rest in Peace, dear sir 🥀

Alanis Morissette and Donald Sutherland. The only Canadians that played God and Jesus.
At the end of the documentary F.T.A. Donald Sutherland performed a monologue from this novel.
Yes he did.
The capacity of planning ahead, combined with a natural egoism is what rots us as a species. In other words: corruption and propaganda.
