I'm glad the overseas version got the changes it did, there's little the Japanese version has over it. The animated water/lava is nice, and the Japanese battle theme is kinda cool (still prefer the overseas one), but everything else was just refined in the overseas release, which makes sense considering it released a year or two later. It's not like today when games often release around the same time internationally. The differences in sound effects mentioned ("goopy" noises, chat sounds, barrier being dispelled, etc.) are because the Famicom Disk System had some extra sound channels that the regular NES did not. That's why they don't cut parts of the music like overseas release.
@@pirategamer6630 I think it mainly got reused a lot over the other one simply because it was in the original Japanese version that the Japanese developers and players of Zelda would remember way more (because there was no “Shindou” version that brought the modified western version back to Japan) Notice how in Smash Bros., if a piece of NES music in the game had a Japanese FDS counterpart, they would always pick the Japanese FDS version?
@@jomaq9233 Nintendo makes changes in Japan on the basis of western countries all the time, it was reused because it was better. I've always thought that Zelda 2 was a great game. I just wish the level ups felt more significant when it comes to magic. The most poweful spell only going down in cost at max level makes sense, but if you look at a magic chart you'll see half the spells max out pretty early, or barely go down.
@@kyuubinaruto17 Yeah, it's flawed, but still a great game. I would have liked to see your max lives increase for every 1-UP you discover, like Zelda 2 redux.
@@Superstar5_ I can see it's problems, and it's also a victim of the Classic Nintendo trope of a sequel having almost completely different core gameplay to the original. Between 1 and 2, I'd say 2 is much more of a pain to try to play through blind, and therefore for anyone who tries it I would tell people to feel no shame for following a guide. That said, the combat is actually pretty fun, though hard, the map is at least twice as big as Zelda 1, and across the board they committed to many ambitious decisions that I respect them going for. I understand why it has its reputation as the black sheep Zelda game, but I too hate it when it's simply dismissed as "bad".

For the Lava/water no longer animating after the change, I think what happened was the water and lava are actually the same animated background tile but the NES just changes the color of the water on the fly to be more lava-like. The religious imagery was required to be removed by Nintendo of America, Inc. At the time, they had guidelines on acceptable content in their games, and religious imagery and themes were prohibited in all games. Also, the roaring sounds heard in the Japanese version were made possible by special sound capabilities of the Famicom Disk System. The NES didn't have these capabilities.
@@TheHeavenlyBuddy You have to remember, back when the NES came out, Nintendo of America was marketing it under the guise of a family entertainment thing, almost like an interactive VCR. Zelda II is my absolute favorite Zelda game. I don't really know why, but I love the shit out of this game. The music is just phenomenal. I play the dungeon/palace music in my head quite often.
In this game, I always thought Link was carrying an upright green glowstick, until I realized that the sword was the same color as his flesh and that green thing was the shield.
It's probably due to the restrictions of sprite colours for the NES/Famicom, they couldn't spare any extra colours for him, so his shield ended up the same colour as his outfit and the sword the same colour as his flesh

the Famicom version of Zelda II's battle screen music was reused as the mini-boss theme music for Minish Cap, that's where most people were introduced to that song internationally
I think the reason they probably changed up the sound was because the disk system had an extra sound channel they could use, and when they ported it, they either had to remove certain sounds or replace them.

I was going t say it. Most Famicom games were released on cartridges (albeit differently shaped than NES carts). Some games, such as the Zelda titles and Metroid, were on the Disk System add-on that was never given a US release.
When the truth is that you're spending $20 a year to play video games online and not these old NES games these titles are more like a bonus. That's how I see it at least. Couple that was the fact that most switch owners have the online service. It was just easier to say that than to completely go over the price and structure of the Nintendo online service

In japan the game was on an add on that had more processing power than the vanilla NES for the US, it wasn’t until later on that Nintendo added upgrade chips to the games like in Mario 3
in the US version, you can also level up only attack and leave the other stats alone. all you do is hit "cancel" when you gain the level until you reach the xp requirement of the stat you want.
I noticed that. I wondered why I'd never heard this rendition of the song before, but I guess you can chalk it up to regional differences. Pretty neat.
It genuinely surprises me that it wasn't fixed in these releases. Usually Nintendo is big on that. Heck, these are the same colors as that banned Porygon episode of Pokemon that caused seizures and required them to shut down for a while.
"Television has traditionally been the most common source of seizures in PSE. For people with PSE, it is especially hazardous to view television in a dark room, at close range, or when the television is out of adjustment and is showing a rapidly flickering image (as when the horizontal hold is incorrectly adjusted on analog television sets). *Modern digital* television sets that cannot be maladjusted in this way and which *refresh the image on the screen at very high speed present less of a risk* than older, analog television sets." - Wikipedia "Around 1 in 100 people has epilepsy and of these people, around 3% have photosensitive epilepsy." *"What is unlikely to be a photosensitive trigger?"* "Digital TV and plasma screens. Adjusting the brightness down on some screens can be helpful if you have photosensitive epilepsy." "Modern computer or TV screens do not flicker, or have a very high flicker frequency. @@randomcanadian6298 yes and no. its hard to expect things when "most" video games are safe unless glitches happen and at that point that's something a tv/video can do sometimes as well. People with epilepsy know things are risks but the more sudden and the more extreme the flashing is the better it is to put some kind of warning up since there's always someone that might know "X" game has flashing but not "Game Z" on top of that its just nice when people that enjoy games know for a fact they can't watch something because they could have done something to make the game playable on their end (someone with epilepsy could have got the japanese version somehow or something like that. i think there are other things people can do like dimming lights, sitting in a well let room and others that i might not know about that someone can do to lower the risks a bit if they want to look at something with the flashing) Its also an issue that people are fighting with in the game industry since some games provide warnings while others don't. there was a journalist that had a seizure while playing Cyberpunk77 and i think they added in warnings pretty quick since then.
I think the reason the water isn't animated in the NES version is because the cartridge didn't have the hardware to write directly to the video RAM where the map tiles were stored, while the Famicom Disk System did. Later cartridges did have the hardware, and that's why newer games did have animated map tiles. Generally, map tiles weren't animated because it required more memory and CPU time to do it.
For the first three games at least. It’s a real name, like Zelda. But NoA mistranslated in their instruction booklet, and they refused to admit their mistake it seems, cuz they altered each game again and again till Nintendo just stopped including English text in the games.
The water was not animated in the NES version because the animation relied on changing VRAM on the fly, which was only possible on the Famicom disk system.
You should look at Rygar. The UK version's regional difference basically made it impossible to beat. It is, as far as I am concerned, the hardest final boss battle in any game ever.

The differences in sound effects mentioned ("goopy" noises, chat sounds, barrier being dispelled, etc.) are because the Famicom Disk System had some extra sound channels that the regular NES did not. That's why they don't cut parts of the music like overseas release.
Japanese battle's better.
It's so good it got reused in a later game. The US one didn't.
@@pirategamer6630 I think it mainly got reused a lot over the other one simply because it was in the original Japanese version that the Japanese developers and players of Zelda would remember way more (because there was no “Shindou” version that brought the modified western version back to Japan)
Notice how in Smash Bros., if a piece of NES music in the game had a Japanese FDS counterpart, they would always pick the Japanese FDS version?
@@jomaq9233 Nintendo makes changes in Japan on the basis of western countries all the time, it was reused because it was better. It wasn't Japan that did stuff like remove Christian iconography and Link being Christian, it was the western releases which later bled into the Japanese releases. This can be said with most of NoA's changes, but that is a long rant for another day.
That was the most believable RAID endorsement I've ever seen. He really just told it like it was, no undue hype, no BS. You can tell how he feels about the game from his face, but he's giving it an honest chance. I've never played it and never will, but this was the most down to earth ad for it I've ever seen.
I still wish it was its own chapter so we could skip it if we wanted.
Zelda 2, the unsung hero in the Zelda franchise. Glad to see it getting attention!
Great video, Shesez. :)
Ah, I see you're a person of culture as well
I can’t believe there are people who dislike it.

Because they are the same exact tile, changing the appearance of one impacts both
Edit: Fixing my bad punctuation because, Internet...

*Modern digital* television sets that cannot be maladjusted in this way and which *refresh the image on the screen at very high speed present less of a risk* than older, analog television sets." - Wikipedia

"Digital TV and plasma screens. Adjusting the brightness down on some screens can be helpful if you have photosensitive epilepsy."
"Modern computer or TV screens do not flicker, or have a very high flicker frequency. Flatscreen monitors, such as laptops, have a liquid crystal display ( LCD) that does not flicker, so are even less likely to trigger seizures."

I thought the screen flashing when you died in Zelda 2 was common knowledge at this point tbh. Also, nice profile picture
@@chrisfratz its better not to assume. there's a lot of younger people that haven't read about every old game ever since there are so many out there now and even then its easy for adults to miss things. i never played or learned about Halo but the people that know about the game would call certain parts of it classic and iconic while i only know that its a game that exists. i don't know if there is a fallacy named after it but basically once you know something it can be hard to remember that its not just a fact everyone knows and pretty much everyone goes through that feeling at some point
It's a RUclips video on a video game. I think at some point you should start to expect flashing lights.
@@randomcanadian6298 yes and no. its hard to expect things when "most" video games are safe unless glitches happen and at that point that's something a tv/video can do sometimes as well.
People with epilepsy know things are risks but the more sudden and the more extreme the flashing is the better it is to put some kind of warning up since there's always someone that might know "X" game has flashing but not "Game Z"
on top of that its just nice when people that enjoy games know for a fact they can't watch something because they could have done something to make the game playable on their end (someone with epilepsy could have got the japanese version somehow or something like that. i think there are other things people can do like dimming lights, sitting in a well let room and others that i might not know about that someone can do to lower the risks a bit if they want to look at something with the flashing)
Its also an issue that people are fighting with in the game industry since some games provide warnings while others don't. there was a journalist that had a seizure while playing Cyberpunk77 and i think they added in warnings pretty quick since then.
What I want more of: Region Break. What I want less of: Raid Shadow Legends
Let the man eat
I think the reason the water isn't animated in the NES version is because the cartridge didn't have the hardware to write directly to the video RAM where the map tiles were stored, while the Famicom Disk System did. Later cartridges did have the hardware, and that's why newer games did have animated map tiles. Generally, map tiles weren't animated because it required more memory and CPU time to do it.
This is such a freaking cool idea for a series and I want more! I LOVE compare and contrast variations!
Why was I surprised when he said his sponsor was 'Raid: Shadow Legends?'
Right??? It's become such a meme by now that you'd think a person would completely avoid it. I even thought it was a joke xD
Well, it still gives you lots of money.
The name "Gannon" has two n's in the Japanese version, too.
For the first three games at least. It’s a real name, like Zelda. But NoA mistranslated in their instruction booklet, and they refused to admit their mistake it seems, cuz they altered each game again and again till Nintendo just stopped including English text in the games.
We need more region break, this is epic
With the child, you aren't stabbing it, you are cutting the ropes and freeing it. At least that was the idea.
The water was not animated in the NES version because the animation relied on changing VRAM on the fly, which was only possible on the Famicom disk system.
This is pretty neat, excited for more episodes.
