The last train produced an abnormal noise on the crossing, accentuated with speed. If you look closely to the left of the crossing, you can see a small vertical movement of the rail at the passage of the wheels of the cars. The track geometry may need to be checked here.
Agreed. It sounded like it was bouncing quite a bit. It was difficult for me to make it out at the wheel level, but if you watch the tops relative to the utility poles, you can see it bounce.
Hello JT, the train is going a bit faster then your actual reading. When you stand off at an oblique angle you get was is known as cosine affect. This will give you a slower reading then the actual speed. For the most accurate reading you must be in directly in front of the train (not a good idea) or behind. Hope this answers your question.
Another great video with a variety of different trains. That last train was making some rather worrying noises as the cars were going onto the crossing. Maybe a track fault there, a hump or twist that was making the couplers ride up and down against each other. It's always a danger spot where rails pass over other fixed height structures, crossings and bridges are often the source of derailment. Any change of height means the rail tracks need to be adjusted in height over a long distance to allow a gentle alteration so the profile otherwise even a minor problem gets to be a bigger one as speed increases. I've seen derailments at crossings that looked perfectly OK but then you investigate and find a soft spot that might only show as a trains weight goes onto it. Doesn't always derail a car but puts severe stress on each one as it passes over and can cause couplers to fail and stress cracks in the trucks.
Hey great video JT. That CSX train really blew back the trees it was going so fast. Wonder how many drivers behind you at the crossing on the last train were wondering "Why is that guy getting out of his car... Oh that's just JT filming another train video"
Amazing how it looks much faster close up , probably because of the size of trains compared to cars which we are used to passing us at close quarters . Greetings from the UK .
I've been thinking the same thing. The size of the locomotives and cars make an optical illusion. They appear to be moving faster than they really are, and the closer one is to it, the faster they seem to go.
JT. Since Kentucky is only a state away and this is Derby weekend they came in 3-2-4-1 but they were all winners in the end. The local with 5 cars of roofing granules from Wisconsin. Train two with a clean paint older Airslide idler car up front. Train three with 53 cars of coils up front still proudly painted Conrail even if the reporting marks are now NYC. Train four with a Maine Central as well as a Boston & Maine boxcar on one of their final flights in Pan Am service of the STB agrees. A great day to be trackside!
Thank you for documenting these trains in the Carlisle, Ohio area, Jaw Tooth! It would have been nice if that Canadian Pacific powered CSX tank car train would have come by sooner so that you would have had a meet.
As always your in the right place at the right time, nice catch of two trains at the same time, and you didn't have far to go to get it !! I read a lot of your comments and many folks seem to agree the radar gun isn't at a good angle for accurate speed... interesting. At least we all know most of the trains are going a bit faster !! Awesome fact filled video !!! 👍 👍 👍

Hi Jawtooth! Once Again, A GREAT Video! I Liked The Fact That You Tracked The Trains' Speed. They Look Like they're Going Faster Than They Are Because You're Standing So Close to Then As They Speed On By. I REALLY Enjoy Your Train Videos And Therefore i Will Continue To View Them. ... Great excellent good video, mr Jaw Tooth. That was nice see a train with other locomotives than CSX or NS. Yes mr Canadian Pacific whe seen Them more but now please wil see Canadian National. That would be great 👍✌️😀. Have a nice weekend. Greet from Zandvoort the Netherlands.
From the angle you were standing at, I’d guess the CSX with the CP power was more like 54 miles an hour, the RADAR gun will read a bit low from the angle you’re at. It’s interesting seeing so many CP locomotives down there, that’s what I see all of the time up here, north of the 49th.
The rolling pipe ist cool with an CP-Locos. 46 miles thats 75 Km/h. And the coil-train from the CSX, nice. the speed is 72km/h. Greetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven
In using your Radar Gun. I understand that you must point it to the on coming traffic/train. To get a proper reading, You will get an improver reading pointing it in the passing traffic/train. That is what I was told about a radar gun, I would ask your local police department. I'm sure they will give you the correct information you need, I as well believe that the train was going faster than what your radar gun was registering. Another great video JT. Take Care: As Ever M-Jay
Nice catches JT and surprised there was a BIGGER locomotive pulling local freight cars. I also like the KCS AUTORACKS which reminds me of a hotel w all the windows in it. I think your radar gun is accurate and w all the freight cars being pulled makes it look faster than it is. Thanks again for sharing your videos with us!
Hey Jawtooth Steve here up in Canada that one locomotive cruise by my place once in a while in London Ont I have a condo over looking the main CP line so I can see these right out my back window. Constant shunting a complete hassle getting North and South in the city.

Did anyone else see the NS train bouncing hard off the tracks at the bypass crossing?
Good morning!
I saw a few comments about that. I will look at it. Maybe I should return and get a close look also
I saw like the whole train damn near fly off the rails with each pass.

Yep..not good!
that's pretty normal at crossings, the run off water causes mud to come up through the ballast. not really a concern.
You can hear the sound of metal being tortured on car after car.
I wish I had five tracks across MY driveway! Another great video, thanks.
Thanks 👍

Mr. Gold is correct. If you know the angle, divide the radar speed by the cosine of the angle to get a more accurate speed.
That CP tanker train was cool
Might have come from your area. I don't know but it was southbound
