Vanishing Lake - Irish Set Dance Music! (Speed 68 BPM, Composed by Francis Ward) | Katy Adelson

- Here is a video of the Irish set dance tune, "Vanishing Lake," played at the speed of 68 BPM, and composed by Francis Ward (winner of the Marie Duffy Foundation Excellence Award In Irish Dance Music Composition). This is a popular tune among Irish step dancers, and is often used in various competitions. I debated about repeating it a second time like I do for my other videos, but I watched many dance videos with this tune, and this video follows the same format they were in (playing the A part 3 times, and the B part once). Picking a tempo was also tricky. I settled on speed 68 because it was easier to convert 6/8 timing to within Logic to an even-numbered speed, and it seemed to be a common speed found in the dance videos I was watching. I noticed that dancers were step-dancing the actual rhythm of the melody line, and some of the higher speeds seemed almost impossible to follow to me! I know I could never step-dance that fast...
It was tricky to get this tempo in Logic Pro (or maybe I have no idea what I'm doing lol). The tempo dancers refer to would be the tempo of a 2/4 timing -- basically the eighth notes are thought of more like a triplet (this tune sounds like a jig, but it's actually not! It's a step dance...). I realized that to convert a 6/8 tempo (I think it's easier to write jig-like arrangements in Logic with the eighth notes counting as a beat) to 2/4, I had to multiply the desired tempo by 3/2, or 1.5. Sooooo..... the eighth notes are actually at the tempo of 102 BPM, but the "mid point" and "down beat" of the measures are at 68 BPM. It took me a bit to figure that out, so hopefully that explanation might help out other musicians who are wanting to make music for Irish dancers.
Apparently there is a vanishing lake in Ireland. One day, there is a giant, sparkling lake, and the next day, it might be gone. People haven't figured out where the water goes, or why, although apparently there has been some research on it. Working with dams, I've seen a few vanishing lakes myself, but not for any unknown reasons.... Usually its because of releases of the water or significant dry spells. It's weird to think that the lake in Ireland randomly might start to release water somewhere. It kind of makes me think of the Rissa disaster -- the earth turned into liquid clay after weight had been added to part of the soil, and the land slide destroyed a large section of the town of Rissa. I'm wondering if a particular type of soil might erode away when the lake reaches some particular elevation, but why it fills back in to bring the lake back is an oddity. It would be a cool mystery to solve!
I was excited to see that this local lake in Colorado was misting the day I went out there to get a bunch of footage. I had it in my head that I wanted a lot of misting lake and fog footage for this video. It was hard to capture the mist's ethereal qualities with my current equipment, but I tried. I think I like how the final video turned out, although I think I could invest in a better lens with a larger aperture. Hopefully I can do that someday soon.
Speaking of lenses, I broke my lens while making this video. =( My camera fell over and hit a rock....It was all my fault, too, because I bumped it. It was the kit lens, and has been the camera lens I've used for all of my videos using my Canon camera. People say that kit lenses aren't very good, but I've thought this lens had performed really well over the years. Time to look into new lenses.
Thank you for watching, and I hope you have a good rest of the week! =)

Wow! This is amazing! I am an Irish Dancer, and the vanishing lake is one of the set dances that dancers perform when they have placed in the top half of the competition. I dance to the vanishing lake, it is a beautiful tune! Beautiful playing!!

Your photography is super great.
Touches my heart and makes me dance. Greetings from Munich, Germany.
I'm currently vacationing in Colorado Springs and wow I'm enjoying seeing so many places that you've filmed in - including Garden of the gods.
Wondering video yet again Katy!
Beautiful melody and a beautiful video! 🙂
I love this misty lake video very much. The music touched me as i found it a blend of blue & beautiful. I could feel a touch of sadness there. I have been to Ireland several times but have never heard of this vanishing lake. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention in such a magical way. I am sure, the local faeries have something to do with that water vanishing and reappearing. 🧚♂I found the name online: Loughareema (The Vanishing Lake) Sending much love to you❣❣❣
I get lost in the beauty of your music, keep up the good work.
Lovely piece and beautiful scenery. Thanks for another wonderful video
God Tier!!!! Was practicing earlier, heard this and started practicing infinitely better....Thank you! More music soon please!
Very beautiful images, beautiful landscapes, beautiful shots well intertwined together. And beautiful images of you playing the violin and walking in this natural beauty. This gives a very beautiful video. And your performance is magnificent. I watched the video twice. I'm going to watch it again. The music, a beautiful melody as well as the nature that surrounds you, gives the taste to dream. Congratulations Katy, it's beautiful. Have a good Sunday.
Approaching retirement and started to learn the fiddle, thanks for the inspiration .

This is awesome!! It’s your best music video yet!!
Beautiful music and keep the good work from Australia
great job throughout. The shot at 1:21 is amazing.
As the sun gently disappears below the horizon of the Golden Gate from the San Francisco Bay at Fisherman’s Wharf, your performance - like a platter of fresh cracked Dungeness crab steamed to perfection, dipped in warm melted butter, tender and mild in flavor, accompanied with a loaf of late baked sourdough bread and a little glass of fine, light white wine - was delectable. 😊🎻🎶❤
Amazing performance! I love this!
Hi Katy, Beautiful tune and playing. The mist on the lake adds to the music. Very interesting story about the lake. Someone will try and solve the mystery.
Not good news about your camera lens. Hope you can purchase another one soon.
Always very nice to hear you play. You put a lot of time into your videos.
Best wishes. Colin
Excellent Katie! Thank you!1
Yeah, 6/8 is really just 2/4 but with triplets. Awesome video as usual!
So beautiful.
Beautiful!
I love this so much! Thank you for posting. It's always such a treat!
I just read your narrative! I'm so sorry about your lens! Is there something we fans could do? Maybe start a go fund me, or you could open a special account at your local bank that people can donate into? I know how expensive those are! 😵💫
Well done, thank you
Love this!
The fiddle festival is this week in Weezer Idaho. I hope you are there this year ! ! !
Hi Katy, I don’t know if you are still doing UTube videos. They were always very good.
Wishing you a happy new year.

Wonderful video thanks, hope your doing well, have a Merry Christmas , thanks ,moe
Love this, friend. :)
wow cool you made a new one :)
Восхитительно!
Божественно!!!
Hi Katy, Found the name of the vanishing lake in Ireland. Loughareema Road, Ballycastle, County Antrim.
I take it’s near this road.
It is quite a good tourist attraction. One moment it’s full of water, a few days later dry as a bone.
Thought you might like what I found.
Just type in the name and there’s a story and I think there is a video or photos.
Hope you found this interesting as I did.
Cheers, Colin
I've missed you!
ქეთი ადელსო , ты молодец ,💪😊 люблю тебя братишко !!!
I am always impressed with the quality of your videography. Sorry to hear about your accident but its always fun to buy new camera gear.... Maybe you can treat yourself to a new Canon R7 as well and start shooting in 4k.
Near Sisters Oregon there is a Lost Lake 44.4340, -121.9052 and every late spring, early summer it disappears
Easy drive, primitive camping, and late in the season the natural drain is clearly visable
The smart people aint figured out where that water goes either
You caught the mood beautifully and It looked chilly!
I have had similar issues with music software and daws! Sad news re lens. Hope you get things sorted ok. :))
Great composition, thank you Princess 🌹🌹
I love your mathematical analysis of the tempo... Your engineering degree is showing. Here is a question.. Your video says it is at 60fps at 1080p but your Canon 70D is only capable of 30fps at that resolution. Did you edit your video on a 60fps timeline or did you shot at 720p at 60fps and then place that on a 1080p timeline. My degree is in photography.. 😀
Thank you! That’s me struggling with 60fps dropping frames in places that looked weird when I tried changing the project to 30fps lol. I had shot some of the misty lake and fog footage in 60fps because I wanted to slow it down to look more ethereal on a 30fps timeline, but then the ducks were looking kind of weird swimming with that slow-motion…and since I had more 1080p 30fps footage than the 60fps footage, I upsized the 720p to 1080p (which isn’t great), and didn’t slow the footage as much as I was originally thinking. But when I changed the project to 30fps to match the majority of the 1080p footage, there were dropped frames of the 60fps in places that looked weird…I could see it skipping…I never really figured out why it was happier with the 30fps footage on a 60fps timeline, but I was going to give that a google when I had a moment to dig into it more… they are multiples of each other, so it was interesting that it seemed to work better one way than the other…
🎻🌹🌹🌹🎻
🎻🎻🎻👌👌👌
where have you gone? hope your ok?
Is there any possibility we might get this song on iTunes or cd or something?🥺
❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹
Do you go to Weiser Idaho for the festival? Are you competing?
Hi Katy, I follow your channel for a longer time and your songs are really beautiful.
Now I am also playing violin and I search for some fiddle tune scales with guitar accords. Do you know a good site to get those? Kind regard, Chris
Thank you so much! 🙂 I find a lot of music on thesession.org, but it’s usually lacking of guitar chords…once I find a tune that I like, I will google it again with “chords” added and look at image results to find the chords. There are usually a lot of different versions for chords, and I tend to end up doing my own thing…
@@KatyAdelson Thanks for your advice. I will check it soon. Looks like I should learn a bit regarding harmonic theory and find out by myself :-). Cheers, Chris
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I can't even play twinkle 😭
I see that you have had a reality of life question come up some 8 months ago. I hope you found the answer you are looking for. It's a lot easier than you think it is.
