    My very first collage /recycle journal was made when I was about 8 years old.It was a very wet school holiday and mum gave us some scissors ,a pot of glue and some old magazines, which were the old large Australian Womens Weekly.We used 1 magazine as our glue book and cut images out of the other mags to glue in .I can remember having a page full of dogs and one with beaches .As a young teenager I was mad about animals ,so filled exercise books with animal photos I found .And when I started art and using a sketch book I would add photos, writing ,colour ,fabric what ever caught my eye.My style has changed over the years and while I absolutely love your work its not something that I myself can make no matter how hard I try ,so instead I work with what I can make .

    Loved this video. I have been going thru old scrapbooks that I have kept since the 80's to revisit things I liked and saved. It was funny that you than posted this video that went along with my train of thought. I too don't like dead space and neatness in my work. I love collage, layering and am very eclectic in my choices of what I like. My epiphany when going thru my books was that I like things that hold other things. lol. Especially decorative boxes, jars and containers. I love your books because they so reflect my style. Love your homework project and can't wait to do it. I am camping this weekend and it will be a great time to do this in the motor home if it rains. Thanks for all your inspiration!!

    I'm loving this series of yours! One fab thing I noticed, which made me laugh was when you had your epiphany with the fabrics not being linear and molding into each other, behind that page you were holding up was a page that you'd collected that had colourful boxes, small tables and chairs atop them and they were all on a different angle to each other! Brilliant! 🙂💎

    Re following directions .... kind of requires us to stay within the lines or parameters, so it makes sense to me you'd say you're not good with them, and also one reason I'm inspired by you. If I can, I avoid the directions, preferring to dive in and see if I can figure it out. I'm discovering the freedom and soul satisfaction of pleasing my spirit and own artistic style, instead of trying uselessly to live up to what I think others might like - of learning to love the beautifully imperfect creations coming out of me. And, I love that we can love, appreciate, respect another's technique without the pressure of trying to duplicate it. Oh my goodness, this subject gets my passions going ...
    Okay, direction/questions, etc. I wonder about something I touched on - developing our own unique style through inspiration not duplication, where is the line, and how to find or create the market niche for our unique brand/style, bringing them together. ??
    Am I making sense, and is this an applicable question for this series? ❤❤❤

    Gina - this is so amazing to see!! I have A TON of journals kept for many many many years, but they are literally HANDWRITTEN : ))) I just love how you journaling artists have taken journaling to a WHOLE NOTHER level ... an ART level as well preserving memory!!! I get my non-linear fix in my classrooms: I teach Toni Morrison...William Faulkner (my god of literature)...and of course Virginia Woolf. We usually reference Quentin Tarantino (film, among others). Thanks for always inspiring and being so genuine!!!! xXRenee

    I had old notebooks full of magazine clippings of things I was drawn too as well! I started doing it in Jr. High and called it my re-magazine. Hair, make-up, clothes, colors, decorating, gardening etc. Sadly they were all lost in a move. How fun it would be to look back on them! Love your videos!

    Have ya all heard of inspiration boards? Or inspiration books? Thats what we're doing and it is "totally" an ARTIST thing. I love magazines and have bins and file folders and envelopes of clippings that make me swoon. I'm in the process of gluing them into blank books. One tip is to use glue tape. Your pages won't buckle no matter what kind of paper it's on. I'm loving these videos! Thank you for taking the time to share this with us.

    Thanks so much for the ideas you give me! I have a lot of ripped out pages all over the place, in folders and bins, and never thought to glue them on notebook paper and put them in a binder! My journalling is mostly mind dump writing in cheap spiral notebooks, bought in bulk when school supplies are on sale at back-to-school time. I write down my creative thoughts, put them away to try out 'some day'.

    I have tons of Country Sampler magazines with dog-eared pages of things I love. I go back through them, from time to time, reminding myself of what I liked about it. I never thought of making notes about it 😄 I'm going to have a lot of fun tearing out pages and putting it all together in one place!

    Wow way more organized than I ever was!!! Gosh I felt good when I put my pictures in my storage thing in the correct order by what I wanted to scrap together . Ok I need to work in my glue book more and do this. I will tell you I did my daughter's wedding album and my whole way of working a page has become so much more relaxed . I use to pick the pictures for a page and spends a couple days pondering what colors and how I was going to do it. I did the album so fast and free.

    My personal revelations so far are that I love to glue and collage. (I have been collecting images since I was a teenager.) I love fussy cutting. I hate acrylic paint because it is messy. Making endless layers and covering them up is definitely not my style. I don't really like words in my work. The process is more important than the product. And, I don't use art to process my emotions and/or life. As for following directions-I never do, even for recipes!

    Oh my goodness I have a binder where I cut out layouts and made notes! I totally forgot about it. I was obsessed with Elsie back in the day and I found her box of inspiration cards I bought years ago. You had me thinking I should pull them out and look at them again. I was thinking of repurposing the cards but might peek at them first to inspire me again. I love love this series because I have been noticing when I create I'm getting caught up in if it looks good or if it looks like what I see on Pinterest. I was working on a art journal page in my TN and kept second guessing what I liked. Boy you sure make me rethink about MY style is so thank you!!

    I have a book a lot like this binder you have. Until now, I didn't realize this is the ground work for developing my style. I thought I was just collecting home decorating ideas I liked. I too, put notes on my pages, because I wanted to see when I flip back thru a year later, that the same things still appealed to me. Never studied the pages from the prospective as an art junk journal. Thank you for helping me find some clarity.

    Loved watching this! I had a binder like this! I threw it out a few years ago because I thought I had used everything from them that I wanted.That was before I started art journaling. Wish I had it now! You video has inspired me to start another one. One thing I do know is I love your style, but I am one of those that likes straight lines and it's hard for me to put something on a page that's not perfectly lined up. Oh my days Gina, you have no idea! I watched this video within an hour of you putting it up and it been a ride, I can tell you. Apologise in advance as this may be a long comment! I ended up creating a 10 side book and writing a review! I make collage pages from magazines and discovered:
    I love Nature - I already knew that and I use a lot of green. I love water colour but for back ground mainly as I cannot paint. I adore sketched images but never use them. I have to co-ordinate colours which is why I am afraid to use it, I stick to neutrals and I obviously hate straight edges, I tear everything, If I have a straight edge, it goes against the edge of the page or gets covered with washi! Worst of all I discovered that I really want to be able to draw and watercolour detail. I love drawing and although I am an art teacher, I cannot draw in detail or accurately although my dad is a true master, and I found this really upsetting. I think I have tried to compensate for this for a very long time. Thank you for the journey and sorry again for the length of this comment xx

    Love this series...I get so excited when I get a notification of one! Actually, I love all of your videos..especially journal with me! I started a big binder of home decorating magazine pictures about 15 years ago. I would usually write in margins what I like about them. I'm going to get it out tonight and go through it..haven't done that in awhile! I'm still fairly new to journaling and am definately wanting to find my style as well as my method of Journaling. I'm experimenting with glue books, altered books, junk journals, and faubonichee journaling. I bought a fancy, embellished JJ and I don't like that as well as the one I made with a lot of different papers and not so much embellishing! Do you bounce around from journal to journal or stick with one for a while? I feel I'm not accomplishing much with all the bouncing, lol!! Thanks again for all your sharing! It's I spiraling as well as fun!💕

    • @stellarjstudios
      @stellarjstudios  7 лет назад

      Thank you! Yes, bouncing around can get overwhelming and counterproductive. I felt that same way at the beginning of the summer so I made a journal plan. It helped me to clarify what journal was for what purpose and I felt so much better. Perhaps you should try that. I made a video about it here is the link:

      Great suggestions! I am constantly looking for better ways to organize. I really wanted to love scrapbooking, but I didn't. I don't like the perfection of the pages I saw others do back 20 years ago when I was trying to scrapbook, I am much more a art journal type of person, and I love the junk journal idea. Anna Buitendorp you should watch Shannon green do journaling by fives because you have a certain amount of time to do each step and you don't have time to match everything maybe doing that will help you to relax and not to be so rigid with matching your stuff just a thought

    • @NDW1955
      @NDW1955 6 лет назад

      Anna, I can so relate to your statements. I have always been matchy matchy, as well, and I want things "square with the world", to quote my mother's observation of me. My stacks of towels and linens and t-shirts are ruler straight! BUT.... this whole junk journal, art journal thing has given me the freedom to be messy and off kilter! 😂 In fact, it's encouraged! So to do this perfectly.... you have to be imperfect. Gotta love the irony in that!!! Go for it and if it doesn't look the way you want... cut out a larger picture and slap over it!!

    I went through my first art journal last week. I analyzed my entries. I found collage is my thing. I love to glue paper in interesting patterns. I watch mixed media artists who collage then cover it up with paint and stencils and stamps...it literally gives me anxiety lol. Why cover up all that beautiful work for texture? Why? LOL. I to am a non liner artist. Straight lines wear me out and I can't for the life of me use odd numbers of items. Loved your quilt closet magazine page! I find some images call to me like yours did and I use them again and again in different journals. Changing size, placement and focus keeps them fresh and iconic. Other people wouldn't see them as such, but they really speak to me. It could be the color, the emotion, or the movement they inspire that attracts me. They add little punch of joy whenever I rediscover them in an old journal page.
