Portable Jewellery Bench

  • I needed a portable jewellery bench so I decided to make one from scraps. A portable jewellery bench means that I can free up my main bench when I'm not working on my jewellery. It can be clamped to any worktop, kitchen table or flat surface. Also, during the summer months it will give me the opportunity to escape the workshop and work outside!
I made my jewellery bench from a couple of scraps of 2x3 pine glued together. I cut out a top from 9mm plywood and cut a hole so that my bench block fits securely in place. I used plywood to create a slot-in rack for my jewellery pliers. I used another scrap of pine and drilled lots of holes in it to store my flex-shaft bits.
I am no woodworker. I have no woodworking skill at all. I am a jewellery maker. This absolutely isn't intended as a demonstration of woodworking but as a way of showing that anyone can make a portable jewellery bench with just some scrap wood and some hand tools.
This is going to be my main workbench from now on. All the jewellery in my shop will be made using it.

As promised in the video, here is a list of where I got the parts for my bench. I have no association or affiliation with these companies. They are simply where I got the parts from. You could likely get everything from Ebay.

I used scrap wood for my bench but if you need to buy a 2x3 it will cost about £2.50 from any local diy store. The scrap of plywood that I used for the benchtop and pliers rack was 9mm thick.
The finish I used was "Liberon Black Bison Paste Wax Antique Pine" which I already had.

I like it. Very portable, can move from room to room, use it in van for travel, etc. As an added bonus, you don't ruin your desk.
I would add some Mass Loaded Vinyl under the box for sound dampening and grip, and liquid rubber inside the scooped out bench block footprint. I love that scooped out hole for bench block and anvil, very smart! Thank you.
The video pace was very good and clear. The music was annoying and hard on ears. Best with no music.

Brilliant! My apartment is a little bigger than a closet and I’ve been trying to imagine how I can create a work space here.

It’s certainly a good idea, I don’t really want to be cutting a half circle out of my bench at the mo, so thank you for sharing.

Great blog thanks. Can you make a video on how to make alloys that melt at different temperatures for soldering silver or gold?

Your little work top gives me some ideas of my own. I love the portable design. I believe one can be made for a soldering station and make them storable in a bench.. i have bench style seating at my dinner table and i think i can make them into storage space for my work bench and tools. Its worth figuring out?
