  • Showing you how to build a study, cheap and practical jewelers workbench from scratch. Amazed by how expensive these jewelry benches are I was inspired to make jenny one that would be under £/$100. The final outcome is a very sturdy workbench that would cost well over £/$400 to buy in a shop.

    You can also add beeswax to the slides on the drawers to make them slide smoothly. Learned that recently and I’m 54. But have only been making jewelry the past 9yrs or so. This is really all you need.

    Very simple design with an inexpensive set of materials. You might want to consider a sealing coat of PVA on the MDF edges to reduce the inevitable furring that occurs. Get her a beech plywood top upgrade for her next birthday! Hope she gets a lot of use out of it.

    I just converted an old wooden teacher's desk into a jeweler's workbench with the cutout. I see it has been a few years since you made this. Do you still like the catch/apron? would you change anything now that you have been using it?
    Thanks!

    • @Keep-Making
      @Keep-Making  2 года назад +5

      Well, the only real chance to this design might be to add more draws, use a fake leather for the catch material, and more space on the left-hand side of the workbench. Apart from that it's been doing great.

  • @pablopeu
    @pablopeu 3 года назад +1

    After a year of use, what would you change about it?
    I'm making one for myself using your video as a guide/inspiration.
    Do you use the sides of the opening as support for the elbows? is it too wide for this? And the height? would you make it the same height again?
    Thanks!

      Hey Pablo,
      So I had this for my girlfriend and shes told me that she wishes there was more space on both sides of here ie more desk space instead of a fabric or leather catch. she would prefer a draw. Good luck with your project.

      Hey Pure, Sorry for the late reply. The wood is just standard "2x4" I can't tell you the lengths and so on as you might be able to get wood that is only 1 M long or 4.8m long Thus this would be something you would need to calculate out. I hope your project want well!

    That bench height is so crucial.. I built my second bench 1.5 inches taller, and it buggered up my shoulders good to file at that height..
    what is really nice (but not necessary) is to be able to hammer against your bench peg.. but one should be able hammer on the/ bench top without rattling everything across your bench.

      I bought the trestles from ikea and put a solid wood table top on as the trestles move up and down plus forward like a drafting table. It’s a good fix for the height as we are all different heights ourselves. Mittback is the name of these amazing trestles
      They look like work horses but so much more functional and nice to look at.

    Has anyone worked out the total length of 2x4 id need to build this?

    • @Keep-Making
      @Keep-Making  3 года назад

      M N, Knowing the total length is not really going to help as you might get your 2X4 in 2M or 1.5m of 4.8m lengths which would then change the number of 2x4's that you would need to get. They way I like to do it is to find out the wood I can get and then then out all my cuts to make sure I have enough wood for the project.

    drilling holes so deep into the wood is not the greatest of ideas. You lose all of the strength and create some big weakpoints, especially considering you're already drilling into end-grain (which is a not great method in itself).
    I would consider using actual pocket-holes from the backside, or drilling all of the way through, and gluing in dowels instead of screws.

    • @Keep-Making
      @Keep-Making  4 года назад +4

      Very true, you got a point there. Considering this is not going to hold more than maybe 40kg and a blunt force from a 2'' jewelry hammer of perhaps pushing at 75 newtons. I think it will survive 😉. ( Thanks for looking out for me tho )
