searh youtube Syncro AWD -- showed my son who did not know about 4wd and he was like, Dad, your vanagon can do that (2wd) ? No...the expression on his face was priceless.... they are quite amazing from what I have seen....and most are rusted and beat to hell.
I have a vanagon also. A 91 2.1 Ive been having issues with it though. Can't take it on long drives before it spits coolant out and needs to be refilled. Thinking of having it rebuilt or replaced.
David, maybe ask around, search on line, ask Vanagon Help page on FB or the vanagon owners on FB ?? 2.1 are durable engines...water pump failure is common, I wonder if that is what is happening ? coolant lines are plastic and the joints fail... try to find an expert in these vehicles before $$$ rebuilding or replacing....

Is it spitting coolant at the blue bottle cap? they crack and need to be replaced
