I have a Sabertooth z97 mk1 with a g3258 as a place holder until I get a better cpu. I have little knowledge over clocking (I did a little on an AMD cpu/ msi mobo) I was wondering what it was I needed to change to get it to OC to 4.0ghz I have seen people with it at 4.2 with stock cooler I just want 4.0 however I am unfamiliar with Asus new uefi bios
What motherboard should I get if I'm planning to get a i5 4690k? Needs to be cheap! Idk what board to get. Not planning to OC soon but might in the future
I need advice for my PC. I have a H81M-E Mobo (it's tiny), an i3-4160 3.60 GHz CPU, a GeForce GT 730 GPU and 8 GBs of Ram running on Windows 7. The problem I have is that obviously this is a cheap build and while it serves pretty decently for most games it runs games like The Witcher 2 or 3 really badly. I don't have much computer knowledge but I'm assuming I could upgrade my GPU to whatever is available (if anything else will fit on such a small mobo) and my CPU to an i5 or i7 that is compatible with LGA 1150 (although I've been told newer CPUs wont run well on a low end mobo). Would it be wiser to upgrade those components on my current mother board and just build a new PC when the time comes (I'm worried parts won't be compatible if I replace the CPU and GPU but it would be easier for me) or buy a better motherboard and use whatever parts from my current build now and just buy the ones necessary (Will be a pain in the ass but probably better to have a better mobo in the long run)? I'm tight for cash at the moment so I'll have to be patient for either option but option 1 would be cheaper since I won't have to buy a new mobo, case, CPU and GPU all at once.
+Myrell Tuller Also what GPU should I upgrade to? I want something that can run games like The Witcher 3 decently but nothing too overkill and one that works well with an i7 4790.
reviews Thanks for the advice man, thinking about it an i7 is definitely overkill, I'll stick with my i3 for now and upgrade my GPU. I might as well order a new stick of RAM anyway while I'm at it. Anyway thanks again and I'll make sure to subscribe.
I can only get the ASUS H81M-plus mainboard and wonder if the same goes for it. I think about buying it together with a i5-4690k. I have a GeForce 970GTX and wonder wether it will work out good. would the MSI Z87-G43 be a safer bet ? I've never overclocked and don't feel the need to yet but in the future I want to have the option though! EDIT: I've read multiple times that Intel won't allow the OC on any chip set that is not Z, and they updated their firmware to disable it (source were from 2013), did they revert the changes ? Because it works for you, or do i need like an older bios vers. pre fix or something like that ? x) sorry for all the questions
***** haha okay, but I'm worried that the MB won't recognize the CPU or is the 4690k not the "new" haswell ? (Haswell refresh). And I knew it will be enough, but for how long is the question, I just want to have the option xP years ago i bought 285gtx and a Q9400, was so high end in its prime, still using the cpu hahaha, time passes so fast
reviews Thanks for the advice! :D The thing is, it should support the CPU if the bios is updated, but I wouldn't buy it directly from asus, and other shops seem to not have the info. at least not on the website. Skylake CPUs will use a new socket am I right ? And most likely will support DDR4 ? If it's going that way I can smell it's getting expensive xP In the end it depends on the price, I've waited soo long for upgrades, always waited for something (in this case I wanted to switch when DDR4 releases) but the CPUs and RAM and even the mainboards are so expensive. But you are right, the MB shouldn't be the cheapest But I just can't make out differences from different motherboards. e.g. ASRock Z87 pro3 / pro 4 / extreme3 Beside more usb slots or something like that on the extreme3, I can't see a difference, but there surely is one. Any advice for a MB in the 100€ range ? Or what I should look for ? And thanks again for the reply!
Hey man! I'm looking at a build with this Motherboard and the Pentium G3258. Does the board come with the correct Bios or do I have to update it? If so how to I do this as I don't know how. Thanks
This motherboard features an H81 Express Chipset, so it doesn't support a PCI-E 3.0 interface. It "only" has PCI-E 2.0 Not that it would make any perceivable difference in practice, (not even with a Titan/Fury X) but just to avoid confusion.
+reviews Although Haswell CPU's have 16 PCI-E lanes Gen. 3, the PCH (Chipset) acts as a "pass-through" and limits & splits (manages) your CPU's PCI-E lanes as per it's own specification and mobo manufacturer's specific configuration. Most Haswell block diagrams that you'll find on the internet are kinda misleading though... showing the PCI-e lanes as being independent from the PCH.
Although these PCI Express lanes are provided by the CPU, the PCH limits their speed and possible configurations of PCI Express links.[13] Capacities may also be lower, depending on the used CPU model.
EDIT: I have a GIGABYTE GA-H81M-S1, basically 95% same motherboard as this one.
+reviews I myself ended up here trying to figure out how in the world is this working... I know the 6 PCIe lanes from the H81 Chipset are there for extra expansion slots and have nothing to do with the actual PCIe x16 lanes from within the CPU which are as everything suggests, connected directly to the GPU PCIe Slot. I've just took a look on my Gigabyte MoBo and that it's physically how it looks on the PCB itself... I'm now on an old Lynfield platform and I'm waiting for my Haswell CPU, so I can't check. It's very weird... Maybe it's just a marketing gimmick trying to mislead people in order to make them purchase more expensive MoBo's with 9x Chipsets. I've scoured the Internet long and wide and I can't get a clear answer. Everything logic points me to believe that every single Haswell MoBo should have PCIe gen 3.0 regardless of the chipset (PCH) Yet, every H81 MoBo specification and bit of info on the Internet suggests only PCIe gen 2.0
+reviews Soo... I'm back with the real testing done (well on my GA-H81-S1 mobo which is more or less the same mobo) The x16 PCIe lanes seem to be indeed running at gen 2... There's also a specific BIOS setting for that, letting you set the PCIe slot to gen 2 or gen 1 and no gen 3. How does that work I couldn't tell. As far as I can think off, I guess the CPU PCIe lanes fall back to whatever speed/gen the Chipset is also using. I'm guessing that all the PCIe lanes (both the extra ones from the chipset and the ones from the CPU itself) get "centralized" through a "hub" (the ring/pch) and work concurrently, thus, as it's the case with mixing different types/speed RAM sticks and they'll fall back to the lowest speed RAM stick, the same seem to be happening with the speeds of the CPU's x16 PCIe lanes. EDIT: Other than that, I'm very happy with my cheap mobo and definitely recommend such a board if one needs to cut down costs with a new Haswell build. The thing with Haswell it's that it has fully integrated VR's inside the chip itself, so it renders expensive mobo's with lots of cpu power phases almost irrelevant. I'm using it with an i5 4690k and it's working wonders. I only wish it had more USB ports on the back. NOTE: OF COURSE I DIDN'T TRY TO DO ANY CRAZY OVERCLOCKING ON THIS KIND OF MOTHERBOARD.
I need help. i already bought g3258 i am planning to have an r9 390 vc. would it work smoothly w/o bottleneck? would 650w would do for the powersupply? do i need a fan when i oc it to 4.4? thanks
+reviews thank you very much! you have explained it very well, the only reason i choose 390 or 380 is because of the reviews in youtube saying r9 380 is better that gtx 960. and furthur r930. do you concur?
I have this motherboard and would like to overclock it to 4.0ghz do you know of anywhere that you can download overclocking profiles or an overclocking guide?
reviews I can overclock this cpu everything is open to being changed the problem is I don't know what changes to make since there are so many changes that can be made I asked if you knew of a guide becasue I have had no luck finding one for this board. AIsuite 3 was able to do an auto overclock and raised it like 6% which is like 3.7ghz but I know I can get this to 4 to 4.3 ghz without needing further cooling I would really like to get it to 4.0ghz.You say change the core voltage but do you change it on all cores? What about the processor cache or the offsets I.E the dynamic cpu voltage offset?
reviews I alreqady read about someone using the asme setup as mine and overclocking to 4.2 ghz with stock cooler so I know I can get it to 4ghz the problem is that there are so many more settings then I have ever seen cause they are all unlocked. My last rig had much of the settings greyed out and they could not be touched this rig has no greyed out everything is customizable and the ram can be overclocked as well I believe It's an I5 and as I said I read or seen a video of a guy using my exact rig but he doesn't give you the settings just says it's possible. I can test the setting in the Intel extreme tuning utility before ever changing bios but it's not very straight forward. Right now core voltage is set on default the dynamic CPU voltage offset is at 1.96mv. I turned the core multipliers up from 32 to 34 but really didn't notice any change I suspect something else must be changed.
Hello, I need your help. I have ASUS H81M-E, i3-4160 3.6ghz, ASUS GT740. I wanna upgrade my PC for modern games. Pls, can u talk for me about choosing CPU and videocard for this motherboard.
I have an Intel Core i3 4330 3.50 GHz processor with this motherboard. I was wondering if I can upgrade to an i7? If so, can someone send me a link to a preferred i7 processor? Edit: Also, what would be a preferred power supply? I currently have a 430w.

Okay thanks alot because thats what i was going to put in. but can i ask, can that graphics card plus a i74790k run any high standard games not at the max settings but any sa#setting?
I had this board for my 4670k and it ran fine on stock settings. It's definitely NOT a good motherboard for over clocking. The VRM's get warm. I was only able to achieve 4.2 with added VRM heatsinks and I would still get throttling. Not to mention I also have a CPU liquid cooler. Aside from that, only limited to 16 GB of RAm and no RAID controller. If you are running a non K series CPU, and don't need onborad RAID, then this motherboard is not bad. I would only recommend a Pentium G series or i3 at the most. i5 and i7 owners, look at Z boards instead.
Just adding: All non-K CPU's should work well with this board. But honestly you shouldn't put anything higher than an i3. The board also doesn't have any USB 3 front panel connection. A big video card will block some of the sata connections, so stick with a mini itx video card.
Can I use ASUS TURBO-GTX1060-6G 6GB Graphics Card on this motherboard ??
Please help me.
Congratulations on a great video. It is very informative. I wish you the best with your channel. From Joe of Tech Ranger channel.
