    Cheating in multiplayer games is just scummy. If you want to do that in a single player game for your own enjoyment, go ahead, I’ve done that for a single player campaign of EU4 to see how a OP Switzerland with guns fights the world in 1444. Cheats are only ever ok in single player, never ever ruin other people’s games

    Tool-Assisted Speedruns are pretty interesting, though they don't typically have leaderboards of their own because it's a more collaborative than competitive hobby. Everyone's trying to find the perfect, unbeatable time and they often work together to do so. Everyone is iterating on everyone else's work, since they usually share the files publicly so others can pick it up and make improvements. And sometimes a TAS run can help improve regular speedrunners' times as they can find new shortcuts or exploits to take advantage of, so in the end, everybody wins.
    Unless someone lies and puts a TAS run on a non-TAS leaderboard, of course.

    Getting an astrophysicist to do statistics for you is just as ridiculous as getting a group of Engineers to do your taxes, sure they can most likely do it, but it's not their specialty, they work with different fields of mathematics the majority of the time.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 2 года назад

      Don't read too much into it. Most likely just a friend/associate of his who he knows is good with math, and they happen to be an astrophysicist. You really think he went out and said "I need to hire an astrophysicist to solve this issue"? Lol of course not. It's just convenient to add to his statement to give credibility to his arguments. If he just said "I got my friend who is good with math to look into the case" that would hold far less potency than saying "I hired an astro physicist". A lot of people in the deep end of Minecraft community are scientists/physicists (just look at the SciCraft server), so the chance that Dream knows someone in the Minecraft community who happens to be an astro physicist isnt unlikely.

      not if you're at minimum an average player or better. 24:10 These runs are categorized by the version, there's no Minecraft Update that changes his cheats.
    No, it was one of the mods he installed, that were supposedly made to help him stream, the developer put something in to help in that direction, but that was neither part of the commission, nor was it able to affect the gameplay on a server, where he would stream his content from. His last apology explains all that, and that if he would reveal the identity of this developer, the fact he put something into the mod that was not requested for, would end his career as a software developer entirely. But of course, the anti-Dream stans don't believe that and think it was Dream with full intention of cheating, like the narrative in that video.

    • @KittenKatja
      @KittenKatja 2 года назад

      Even a developer that don't know anything about Minecraft code had an argument with me, accusing me of being a Dream stan. (at the time of the accusation, I was confused of what a Dream stan is)
      He thought the drop chances are stored in a random XML file inside the game, my reply was that it is not true, the drop chances can be modified with a data pack, even.
      The file paths are data/minecraft/loot_tables/gameplay/piglin_bartering and data/minecraft/loot_tables/entities/blaze.
      I believe that guy learned that day, if he's going to start making assumptions to a Map Builder, he's to make the research first. (the wiki explains a lot of those things alone)

    About the charity event cheating, I honestly don't care if its for charity or just a regular match or whatever the fuck. There is not a blurred line with cheating. Either you are cheating, or you aren't. And willful cheating (as in discussing the plan to cheat pre-game) is just as bad as hardlock spinbotting. You're breaking the given rules intentionally to gain an unfair advantage, thus you should be banned forever. Zero sympathy, zero tolerance. Cheaters no matter the type, all need to be removed from this earth.

    In single player in the old gta, who has never spawned a tank lies. Anyone who has never once gone creative in minecraft is also lying. Sometimes if you're not in an online game, so you're playing on your own, you enjoy cheating. Not online. People go online to have fun. A hacker destroys other people's entertainment in order to "have fun". Cheating in a single player game is "just" losing a challenge against yourself, if you play a game seriously. Anyone who cheats in speedruns loses not only against themselves, but also against all people who have a legitimate speedrun.

    I actually did cheat in one multiplayer game, and I'll be dating myself by admitting it, but it was the UT2004 beta demo. I would never have done so were I not to have been offered by a friend at the time, but curiosity got the better of me. At first I just used brightskins (before that was invented legitimately) but I did end up using aimbot and radar a few times. Mostly on a private server with friends where I was open about it (we turned it into a game of them trying to kill me), but also once or twice in publics under an alias. Mostly because most other people I saw who used cheats were terrible at the game to the extent of seeming lobotomised, so I was curious how unfair it would be if someone half decent did so. I got it all out of my system pretty quickly.
    By the time the full game was released I'd already stopped using them, and I never touched any other form of cheat since. Had plenty of hackusations over the years, but ironically my limited prior experiences gave me a good idea of when other players weren't legit. The landscape and scope has completely changed nowadays though, both in terms of what's at stake, and the extent that people will go to. The cheats themselves are a lot more sophisticated now too. Despite me now being a working adult I don't even cheat in single player games anymore, I figure if I don't have the time or the inclination to achieve something then that's my problem. Besides, the sense of fulfilment you get from witnessing your own progression far outstrips any cheap thrills there might be in taking shortcuts, at least in my opinion.

    The Dream one had me disappointed. Genuinely thought we may have found that lucky lotto number in Dream and people might have just made a biased decision against him. People generally think extremely low, astronomical odds are just plain impossible, that they literally cannot happen. People tend to forget, that probability represents a "chance" of something happening, not a certainty of something happening or not happening. You could be that lucky, or unlucky, person who gets that manuscript of a perfectly legable copy of shakespear's fine works as written by a chimp ala random key typing. It is a possibility, no matter how improbable.
    Heck, the odds of us existing at all is 1 in 10^2,685,000, but we do in fact exist.

    i mean dream wasn't rising to fame through speedrunning, he was dping that too, but his content on youtube surrounds being good at the game - and the "cheats" he had were not for speedrunning but the challenges with his friends where everyone knows that they're running in the background so the content can evolve around what is happing and doesn't hit an end when the luck is too bad... so their phrasing was very off, that he had those installed was not like malicious and trying to cheat but using it to produce content better where that does not matter
    that he didn't turn it off before actually speedrunning is of course bad and shouldn't happen and he should have clarified that waaay earlier without all the drama (and I think he actually wanted the drama so he gets more popularity)

    Here is my opinion. Using programs and bots in game constitutes as cheating. However if there are exploits that can be used by making use of existing bugs/glitches in the game I say that it does not fall under the category of cheating. I come from a generation where there was a time when multi-player games (pre-internet and very early internet) games would be released with bugs. Sometimes people made use of bugs to get the upper hand. And people just had to learn about the bugs to make use of them or to learn how to counter them. ANd funny enough back then every bug/glitch someone tried to exploit always had someone eventually finding a way to counter it. To me little things like making use of glitches in game added to the dynamics. However I can agree that people who purposely modded their PC/console and game to try to actually reprogram the game via code are dirty cheaters and deserve to get banned/have their console or PC bricked.

      It's all about intention - and also the fact that multiplayer and single player cheating are two different things. So for this case, lets only talk multiplayer, as the entire point is a fair playing field.
      If you make use of in-game glitches and unintended behavior willfully, then you are by definition of pretty much any esports TOS a cheater. If you are able to clip through map geometry and use it to your advantage, and you actively pursue this advantage, then it is grounds for banning on par with having cheat software running your gameplay.
      Take Overwatch as an example: If you can place a turret inside a map geometry where it can't be destroyed, and you don't do it by sheer accident, then it is grounds for a ban on par with cheating. If people make you aware of your turret being inside map geometry and you don't destroy it yourself, you will be considered a cheater/glitch abuser. Same with CS if you can clip through a suppsed unclippable map geometry, then it is cheating. There is no grey zone here. Accidental glitch abuse is accidental and happens from time to time. Abusing glitches knowingly, is cheating.

      @@Real_MisterSir Yes but you are looking at modern TOS agreements. Which I find is bullshit. When there is a glitch and clipping instead ofbanning, the devs are expected to patch it right away. In early internet days when bugs and glitches were found, server would go down and be patched. Go back a bit farther during the days of non internet usage when TOS was not a thing, you just had either wait for a version 2 of the game to come out or get around it. For instance let's take glitches that take advantage of cool down times. IN Halo there is the energy rifle that had a cool down time after firing it, but under certain circumstangces and if you could time it right (knowing how long to count, know how to watch for frames ect) you could pull off consecutive firing or at least the appearance of consecutive firing. The clipping issue you talk of shouldn't be put on the player's side. If the clipping is bad enough and plainly obvious to the player, it should be the dev's responsibility to shut down that map and patch the damn game. Maybe it's just a difference of ideas and how separated I am from the modern gamer.I remember playing CIV the original command and conquer, battlefield 1942 and the original halo. I find that modern TOS is against the player when it comes to glitches. NOw I wil agree that if someone is actively and knownllyusing glitches but using 3rd party software to assist in making use of said glitches i deserves a ban. But that's a whole different subject than just making use of a glitch with your controller. If a glitch is so game breaking to give an unfair advantage to the player, rather than deserve a ban, it should get patched. Espescially with modern day games where devs are able to apply patches at the drop of a hat. (No literally but it's 100x easier than 18 years ago). Maybe I'm just a boomer behind the times and think people bitch too much in multiplayer. I remember people didn't used to try to doxx each other if they got their ass handed to in an online match just because of salt. There is a very clear line between cheating and not cheating. But the definition and circumstances that constitutes cheating has changed over the past 20+ years in video games. I know one genere though of games that still has the attitude of "Get good or get out" motto. And that is fighting games. It's brutal. But the player HAS to learn about the game, even the flaws. And if the flaw is so bad, the dev fixes it. FPS is not the same but there was a similar motto back in the day. But yeah what do I know. I'm just an old foggy left behind in the times of change.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 2 года назад

      @@Haiyami There is no such thing as "devs are expected to patch it right away". That entirely depends on how much resources they're receiving to maintain patches and where their focus lies. The core basis is that any glitch, regardless of when it was discovered, will be considered glitch abuse (aka cheating) if you knowingly use it to gain an unfair advantage.
      This is nothing new, difference is just that modern games are far more complex than games 10+ years ago so it's much harder to patch out everything immediately when discovered. And you can never fully patch everything, there will always be some elements of a videogame that are inherently broken, its all about how well these glitch points are masked so they don't affect common gameplay scenarios.
      We also have to establish a hard line here, as the example you bring up with the cooldown timing in Halo is not the same. Glitch abuse (unless directly stated otherwise) specifically refers to abusing glitches that are uniquely available to you / situational. A weapon glitch is typically available to everyone, as everyone tend to have the ability to gain access to the same weapons. Here it instead refers to "unintended game mechanic" that is allowed until patched out - and sometimes devs accept these unintended game mechanics if they add value to the skill ceiling of the game without breaking the fundamental gameplay experience (Overwatch is a great example of this, as is bhop in CS etc).
      However, if there is a certain part of a map that allows you to glitch through it and shoot while invulnerable - or do something else that actively puts you at an unbalanced gameplay advantage where the enemy can't fight you fairly, that is glitch abuse.
      The glitch abuse prevention aspect is of course, as you say, only really a thing in more modern titles that receive online updates - whereas old titles were shipped as-is, and typically fixes to glitches would come through dlc packages instead, or direct sequels. But counter strike is still a good example where the concept of glitch abuse going against TOS has been a thing since the first games launched, and was so for most pc-based competitive online titles as well as rts games etc. It wasn't as frequently enforced back then, but thats another topic entirely.

    To be fair in the Dream case (Not a Dream Stan, i just watch some of his vids)
    Dream technically wasn't a Speedrunner, most of his videos were Manhunt videos where he gets hunted by some of his friends who try to kill him, while he himself tries to finish the game.
    He did come out and said he had a Plugin to increase the odds of multiple things so the Vids weren't him trying to get Blaze Rods and Ender Pearls for an hour.
    And honestly we're talking Minecraft Java-Edition here. We give Skyrim shit about being bugged but the only thing that is more bugged than Minecraft Java-Edition is Minecraft Bedrock-Edition (hence it's community given name: Minecraft Bugrock-Edition)

      I think what is the more damning evidence is that he denied the claims for so long and hired an astrophysicist to prove he didn't cheat. He could easily have looked at his files to verify he did or didn't cheat and apologize to the community. His adamant refusal actually proved to be more of a solid proof of his deliberate guilt.
      He also submitted his run to the official speedrunner leader board, which made him subject to the speedrunner rules.
      The best course of action would have been to immediately admit the accident and apologize, which he had every capable chance of realizing by just checking which mods he had active. He took months to realize he had a cheat mod "accidentally" active.
      Either Dream is a complete idiot or he cheated and was trying to get away with it. I'll leave you to decide which is which.

      Dream was definitely a speed runner, he was doing speedruns, posting them on the official speedrun website as legitimate runs, so that makes him a speedrunner. The controversy wasn’t about his Manhunt vids, although speculation came about because off the controversy, it was about him posting cheated runs as real and denying it, hiring an astrophysicist to try and prove his innocence, only to coincidentally months later find the cheats “hidden” in his files. Never found them until basically everyone already believed he was cheating then suddenly found them, makes it look like if more people believed him we wouldn’t have found out at all, very strange indeed.
