"Solar eclipses, like the upcoming one on April 8, are a well-documented scientific phenomenon. As early as 763 BCE, ancient Assyrians were charting the process by which the path of the moon temporarily obstructs the sun, and astronomers have continued to do so for thousands of years since. Our knowledge of eclipses predates our knowledge of gravity, algebra, and toilet paper. We are well aware of their existence, and we are well aware of what causes them. (I mean, I personally am not, but other people ostensibly are.)
What the ancient Assyrians could not have possibly predicted, however, was the singular stupidity of the current incarnation of the American right. Unconvinced by thousands of years of scientific inquiry, as well as driven by a general sense of apocalyptic bloodlust, many on the right are trading conspiracy theories about the upcoming eclipse, ranging from the belief that it signals the End Times to the idea that the Biden administration is using it as an opportunity to shut down cellphone service or bring in the National Guard in an effort to make beautiful blond children who play sports transgender.
This latest onslaught of misinformation began, as it often does, with InfoWars host Alex Jones, who has spent the past few weeks ranting on X about the upcoming eclipse. Last week, he posted a clip with the caption: “Major Events Surrounding The April 8th Solar Eclipse[.] Masonic rituals planned worldwide to usher in New World Order.”
The post, which has more than 3,000 retweets and 1 million views, illustrates how the trajectory of the most recent solar eclipse viewable in the United States, as well as the trajectory of the upcoming eclipse, form an “Aleph” and “Tav,” which (as anyone who was forced to go to Hebrew school instead of staying home and using cheat codes to make your Sims woo-hoo naked knows) are the first and last letters in the Hebrew language, signaling the beginning and end times."

There's total solar eclipses, partial solar eclipses, lunar eclipses, and then they all happen in different parts of the world. The U.S. had a total solar eclipse in 2017, which isn't normal. The U.S. gets a total solar eclipse every 40 years which makes it kind of rare in the U.S., BUT it's not rare because it happens in another part of the world around every 18 months. The next total solar eclipse will be in Spain and North Africa around 2027.

I’ve seen many eclipses…. But yesterday was the first time I was in the path of totatotality! Truly the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long long time! And the entire community came together to celebrate! Was extremely wonderful to see people cheering for something and having a sense of wonder together! Until you’ve seen it, don’t knock it
Yes, this. A *partial* eclipse is interesting, and worth checking out but you're not going to bother watching it for the whole two hours through your dark glasses. Maybe with a telescope it's worth watching the whole thing if you are an astronomer.
A *total* eclipse is actually quite a spectacle, and only lasts a few minutes at best so there's no time to get bored. It's a good bucket list item but it you're traveling make other plans in the area you're traveling to so you haven't wasted your effort if it's cloudy. I did that when I went to Riverton Wyoming in 2017 to see a total eclipse. I visited some great Rocky Mountain locations as well as getting a good view of the Milky Way in a truly dark sky. If you are a city dweller the Milky Way is every bit as amazing a total eclipse and you don't have to wait years to see it, you just need a clear sky and no moon.

It’s a total eclipse. They’re rare especially in the place where you live. We had one 7 years ago and we won’t have another one here in the US for a long time
We've had 3 solar eclipses in the past 7 years, depending on where you are located in America determines if you are in the path of totality, but all 3 had a totality path. Its not a rare event.
@@anubispatron we've had two total eclipses where thr sun is fully obscured and the corona and solar prominences are visible in 2017 and 2024. October 2023 was an Annular eclipse where the moon appears smaller than the sun but doesn't ever fully obscure the sun's light. The next one to cross the US will be in 2044, 20 years from now. And the last one before 2017 was 1979 in the Pacific northwest and 1970 just skimming the east coast. So, unless you were born a few years before the 2017 eclipse and just saw the 2024 eclipse, and we're fortunate enough to be in the path and be able to afford to travel there with time off from work, these are exceptionally rare events. Some would say once in a life time. Twice if you're lucky.

Eclipses happen regularly but not in the same place. So if you don’t travel to see them, you do t see them every 6 months. Not every place gets to see the totality. There are different types of eclipses.

Total solar eclipses do happen regularly (at least 2 per year, but no more than 7) visible from somewhere on the planet. But, it is rare for the path of totality to pass directly over your house. Some people can go an entire lifetime (70+ years) without seeing one. But, if you are interested and have the financial freedom to do so, you can see a couple of total solar eclipses every year.

One last thing, in 2017 I begged my aunt to come with me to see the eclipse in 2017. she didn't want to go, we had to drive several hours to see it in totality. She complained the way there. She thought it was dumb and there was no point to it.... and it was overcast when we got to the spot. but just at the moment when all hope was lost the clouds broke apart and we could see this most amazing thing as the sun slipped behind the moon and we were bathed in darkness. My aunt was so amazed by the eclipse that she told everyone she came across for the next several years about just how amazing it was. seeing an eclipse is mundane and boring, seeing an eclipse in totality was almost spiritual, and I'm an atheist.... you guys don't have a clue what you're talking about.

It seems so uncanny because it is such a sudden nightfall. The “most” eclipse I ever saw, we all piled out of work for it. Once it got to about half dark, the temperature dropped and the birds all went silent. (It was an older quieter city street with one side lined with gardens & mature trees.) although it was a dead-end street, the traffic noise also seemed to drop off. Maybe people stopped for it. People didn’t make such a huge fuss about these things then - just something tacked onto the weather report and warnings to not look at the sun.

I'm guessing that neither of you has been in the path of totality for a total solar eclipse. The change in sounds, temperature, animal behavior, and the eclipse wind is something hard to describe, but it really does effect you viscerally, and when you see the corona, Bailey's beads, and the rest of the unusual solar phenomenon, it makes for a bucket list event.
It is pretty cool, not the world shaking even many sell it as. But then I live in a world of miracles where I see fantastic things any time I want to. Not being a bronze age goat herder I am harder to impress.
