I was always under the impression that the opposite was true. When Dodrio came out, I felt like the youtubers made the general player base think it was bad just because those youtubers thought drill peck/jump kick was optimal over tri-attack and thus Dodrio was criminally underplayed.
I feel like you, Mr. Spragels, are kind of responsible for this in the case of Dodrio, Snorlax, and many other underrated pokemon. Your defense, Mr. Spragels? Love your vids bud, I appreciate you trying to make the game a better place!

    • @sifar1857
      @sifar1857 Год назад +4

      I agree with @vgpilgrimage3190.
My two cents. Though, I will not pinpoint any specific RUclipsrs and if you, as a RUclipsr, feel a little spice from anything said here, it could probably mean you are part of the problem -
RUclipsrs rush to make quick content so they can quickly secure viewership, without too much care and consideration. Kinda have to blame it on the design of RUclips algorithm in a sense cuz RUclipsrs are under a huge pressure to get videos out quickly.
This rush to highlight the best moveset and hate the inferior one ultimately hurts the movesets that take time to master when the movesets get a lot more hate than is warranted. Example case is Stored Power Espeon or Tri Attack Dodrio like you mentioned or most recently Surging Strikes Urshifu. Because as much as these movesets are not the best, or it is not immediately obvious how they could work, they are not THAT bad that picking them is like auto-surrendering as how these RUclipsrs cry about. So now, not only do we creative people have to deal with trying to master a tricky moveset, we gotta deal with these RUclipsr’s whole army of supporters griefing and crying just cuz we picked a moveset that doesn’t go in their stereotypical robotic way of playing. People will cry “waaa why isn’t the Urshifu one-shotting enemies” and totally ignore the fact that he just sustained in the front line of a fight for a whole minute and helped wiped out the team with surging strikes and his badass looking combo unite move. People are incapable of nuance, and that is definitely the norm. But boy it really sucks having to play the same build and moveset as every damn person in the whole world because I’m gonna be hated for trying something different. People really need to have a more open mind.
Everything in a lot of these RUclipsr’s eyes is about making a quick buck and using what they know immediately works. Not much delayed gratification and patience to see something succeed with effort. They just want hand-me-downs from the devs where they need something as broken as Mr. Mime or the new Buzzwole patch coming up. Something that will generate an explosive number of views and they can herd sheep around, not encouraging any creative independent thinking that can allow people to see success that they own. It is in their best interest to keep things extremely polarised and sensational.
I can’t tell you for sure which way is the best to lead a community, and I am kinda a nobody. But what I do know for sure is that as a leader, you gotta take some accountability for your leadership. And as we are all human, we have imperfections in our leadership that will have negative consequences to people. The only right move is to own up to it and inspire others in how you learn from it and improve with grace. So while I genuinely appreciate all the work you do, I still think you guys can be better and are able to reach that standard that will only ultimately benefit you.
      Peace. ✌🏼

Well that's certainly one way to look at it, I really don't think you can blame RUclipsr's for their audience being unable to think beyond what their 'told' to do. Much of it is simply human nature and how we tend to absorb information. We're hardwired to observe and learn by example.
Besides, its not like RUclipsrs themselves have totally unique ideas, they just happen to have the platform to more easily spread them, otherwise they're relegated to sites like Reddit or your game forum of choice. Fan sites like Smogon or Unite DB would exist with or without RUclips.
Going back to Dodrio as the example, does anyone really think nobody else noticed that agility practically negates having to manage the speed meter? Naturally its going to be easier to be effective with and thus seem "better" than jump kick. The problem is less "bad" movesets and more some just being too good, or the easier path to follow you could say.

  • @LostHinkleShad

I normally don't talk shit, but I will be honest, some of the unite RUclipsrs jump from one MOBA to another. When they are stuck on one MOBA they complain that it's "dead" or "dying" and tell everyone not to play. They then go to another MOBA and say its "dead" or "dying." They then complain that no one plays and blames the company making them. It's stupid.

If you think about it like this: increased pick rate adversely effects win rate when pushed to higher extremes. For example, if Jake makes a video about Dragonite that causes the pick rate to balloon to the point that Dragonite is on almost every team then the win rate will be close to 50% because each team will have a Dragonite win and one lose. 🤔 Just a thought experiment more than anything but there are nuances to it all for sure.

Pokemon Unite is ruining Pokemon Unite. It's one dimensional ranking system that only cares if you win or lose, and it's matchmaking system that does literally nothing to evaluate skill level of players, compound each other to create a largely miserable experience.
The fact that you get nothing for losing, even if you did everything in your power to give your team the best possible chance at winning, and were MVP by a mile, is evidence of a very flawed system. The same way you can misplay play all game, offer very little to your team, but still be rewarded for winning, is complete nonsense.

So I think what people mean by "youtubers are teaching people how to play poorly" is people will mimic builds, or strats without understanding why they are good, or will make choices based on what they saw someone else do without the skill needed to do it (stacking, invading, pulling, exp splitting, etc)
Personally I saw your videos with someone carrying on Ttar, and I used my own experience and was like "huh Ttar seems really good for solo queue" and then picked up the mon and have had great results. People are skipping that own experience part and just using media to learn.

While I don't think RUclipsrs teach people to play wrong, there is a misplaced emphasis on an individual's ability to "save the game" when the enemy team has it together, and your own team is extremely suboptimal. Maybe if there were better tactics demonstrated on how to do this, that wouldn't be an issue. However, as you've said in one of your older videos, a lot of the times, you and your teammates are playing an entirely different game, and neither are compatible.

I think there's fair room for extremely valid criticism to be heard among the content creators for Unite, and it has nothing to do with misinformation. Some of the bigger names in the community that you even named in this video can be inexcusably childish on Twitter. Particularly one is toxic to the point of screencapping games to roast people in her tweets. This isn't even touching on the streamers who talk down to their teammates consistently. Nobody expects perfection in a stressful community, but I have stopped following multiple Unite creators at this point because they are demonstrably mean people.

There is only so many people on the team and so much time things take, while money is to be made, stuff gets released before they are ready i'm sure... They have to have a HUGE laundry list of changes to make far in advance of YT uploads...
I have been programming for over a decade and often know that something is jank before I ever show it to anyone, and when I get critiques, its usually things I was anticipating... They aren't just blindly moving sliders on a GUI based on what Jake has said or the angry toxic mob has said...

The biggest clue to all this is how long it took the devs to really get a grasp on Lucario. There was a patch cycle where Luca saw a nerf every single patch and yet it STILL dominated games and continues to be a very good pick to this day. Was it because of content creators? Probably not, it was just very good and brought a lot that (at the time) very few other mons also had in their kits.

One of the youtubers you mentioned would make videos posting people's private profiles publicly on their youtube videos. That's not right, and it's something that needs to stop. Don't post people's private profiles publicly. But only famous people can change other famous people. A random person on the internet (like me) won't make that change. 4:35 Mr Mike broke records on all grounds when it came to being OP. Win rate, pick rate, RUclips creator awareness, community uproar, in-game data and match records. The devs KNEW it was blatantly overpowered, yet they left it for a month because they wanted to sell some stupid skin for premium currency.
That left a bad taste in my mouth and I left the game in the same season (just as they nerfed Rayquaza). Nevertheless, this example is flawed because the devs intentionally screwed with Mime, rather than the community.
(rebuttal: Sylveon was OP for a day, Timi knows what's broken and what's not)

I personally think it's crazy how some of the biggest content creators I watch literally have usernames with Pokemon references in them but they'll consistently play League of Legends instead of even looking in Pokemon Unite's direction. Even though they openly love Pokemon and MOBAS they'll go back over and over again to a community that's extremely well known for its toxicity and that they actively discourage others from joining. Make it make sense.

Content creators/Community figures/API statistics certainly do help shape/influence the player meta, or at the very least, leaves some players with an imagined reality of the meta.
Some people claim certain things and perpetuate it despite having insignificant experience with it. More people need to admit that they don't know enough to actually provide commentary on balance.
My one big complaint is how greedy some community figures play. They'll play center and eat lane farm, actively stopping powerspikes of teammates by claiming uncontested farm. Which is fine (debatable) if you're qualified to carry in soloQ but this behavior isn't executed well by the actual playerbase. Again, not an issue of the content creators but rather the playerbase itself which likes to mimic.

The main reason where RUclipsrs are lagging in is that they don’t personally talk about team fights which is actually game is for they just role out a video where they discuss how to solo carry this that but when a actual person plays that build he’s not skilled as they are so everything get interrupted. So if you want to grow this community and make people win games u need to talk about team play rather then solo carry!

As a former game developer for a moba I can tell you typically how games like this are balanced.
So the game as you play gathers analytics. Like how much damage you do how many times moves are used, we get a peak at these with the API but there are typically a lot more. Data is profit so games like this gather as much as they can.
Typically the developers will then look over this data and decide if something really does need changed. Some times players agree with this data and some times they don't (like in the case of match making data showing its "working as intended")
Now here is the important part. An amount of data has to be collected from the target group they balance against before its reliable. Some times a sudden influx of pick rate from a character cause of a youtuber video can give the data needed to finally make a choice one way or another, however not normally because typically these things are planned much further in advance and the data is being watched dailly for some kind of metric to trigger a nerf, buff, or change in one way or another.
    TLDR:
Nerfing and buffing of characters in moba is done based on data collection, and where as its true that a sudden influx of pick rate because of a video can give devs the data needed to make choices, its typically done the other way around, where devs using data discover broken stuff far before community does and wait to see whats best way to fix it.

Tencent is the company that runs Pokemon Unite, they also happen to own League of Legends. In LoL when a new character comes out they make it the most expensive. For example highest cost champions in LoL are 6300 Blue Essence (in Unite it's gold), but the new champ will be 7200BE. The reason they do this is because long time players who have everything unlocked already (or everything they want) it gives them something to spend their huge surplus of in game currency.

The influence of content creators do have an impact on the game we play. Believe it or not players do heavily follow these people who tend to make a good portion of their content on meme builds or news. Why? It gets them more click more cash and they themselves are highlighted more. After all, it's still a job. As much as many of these players speak because they just want to enjoy the game.
But the truth is we cannot blame these creators for the things they do, afterall they bring more players to download and play the game. But at the same time they aren't entirely not at fault because they themselves will make content that gets the most clicks and views. Those videos still heavily affect their audience and in turn affect other players.
On both sides of the coin here, the lesson is players do make the game better, but they also make it worst. People aren't perfect, but we also need to recognize what we do as a community affects our game on a whole level.

Obviously, no YTer is the reason for any balance changes made by the devs. That would be incredibly silly to think. Although, it would also be incredibly silly to think that YTers have zero affect on the games that we play. Yes there are lots of videos showing how to do things the right way, but there are also some videos that are showing the opposite. I won't name anyone specific, but if someone with a good amount viewers makes a video saying that they are playing something that they know is bad but are doing it just for fun or whatever reason, that can have an affect on people who are more impressionable. Even if the video has the prefacet of saying that whatever they are playing is bad and that no one should play it, there are still gonna be people that go and play it. Either because the YTer said it was fun, or maybe just because the YTer said not to, or whatever the reason.
The point is that if someone uses their YT channel to spotlight a certain Pokemon/build that is objectively not good, or at the very least isn't as good as other options, is going to make that Pokemon/build appear more in games. YTers don't have the power to cause balance changes, obviously. However anyone saying that they don't influence the games that we play at all is just coping. People are impressionable, especially younger viewers.

Every 1 and their moma was screaming for Mime /Mew to be nerfed. It was pretty much universal "this was OP because we believe it's OP " and they got nerfed. I know this video is sarcastic, and I think it's ridiculous that people think youtubers commenting on a pokemon's viability in Unite would make the devs change it, if they do. However, I do think you're downplaying or don't understand the effect that youtubers DO have on the game, especially in higher ranks solo/duo queues. If youtubers tell people a certain build is bad, people get mocked for using it. If youtubers say a pokemon is busted this patch, everyone picks it. I think maybe you're too close to the situation to understand. I don't say any of this in a mean-spirited way. I enjoy your videos and you seem like a nice guy. Zero problems with you, but it is the reality of the situation. I can give you a few examples.
    1) Krashy's follow the jungler around video. I played the game since launch. I NEVER had a problem with this. After that video, there's been at least ten games where I call jungle first, someone calls it second, and people do this. It's not only a loss, but it just makes the game not fun at all. I get that he was being silly and didn't intend to ruin people's fun, but it is incredibly toxic and people are impressionable and will do the things you guys do, like it or not. It's not like you should be responsible for their behavior, but like it or not, you guys do influence other people, so when Krashy makes that video and you amplify it, you've made 10+ games for me just unenjoyable and who knows how many other people's.
    2) There was a patch where Greninja, my main got a slight buff. After the patch, I still had no trouble getting him to use since the buff wasn't all that much of a difference maker. Then you made a video saying hyperbolically or whatever, that Greninja was busted and the build was incredible. For like a week, I couldn't pick him. Yes, I can play my alt, but when you're ultra 1 or 2 and trying to get master, and can't pick your best poke that carries you in random lobbies because a youtuber decided to exaggerate, it can be frustrating.
I'm not suggesting you don't highlight buffs. I get you need clickbait for your videos. I can even acknowledge that the second example is pretty harmless, but A) stuff like the first example is just ridiculous and B) pretending like you guys don't impact the playerbase is very naive. If I see a new spragels clickbait title, I know that will impact matches for the day. When I see "You can be afk and still win!" in a Comfey title, I know you're trying to be funny and clickbaity, but I guarantee you people will see that and afk play Comfey when they're released.
I don't want you to not be yourself or not try to be funny, but I do ask you reconsider your view on your videos not having any impact what-so-ever and try to avoid making videos that will negatively impact the game. Hopefully at least the toxic jungle video call out resonates. Not raging or insulting you, so hopefully a lengthy, polite articulation offering you a different viewpoint will be considered. Appreciate the content.
