2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP: New Neo-Retro Racer!

- Yamaha’s MT-09 based neo-retro, the XSR900 is in for a new variant in 2024, with the announcement of the very cool new XSR900 GP.
Like with the latest gen XSR900, styling is quite unique by modern standards, so this seems like a machine that’ll polarise riders.
There’ll be two colour variants available the white, red and yellow that commemorates Wayne Rainey and is inspired by his ‘90s YZR500 livery called Legend Red. There’s a more downstated ‘Power Grey’ option too.
The XSR900 GP will run clip-on handlebars, for the proper sporty ride ergonomic, alongside two-position adjustable aluminium footrests and a more padded seat, with Yamaha promising a balance of enjoyment and comfort. The GP should be a bit more comfortable than a full-on sportsbike as a result, with those clip-ons run above the top-triple and also a bit raised themselves.
We also see the use of Yamaha’s Spinforged wheels, helping minimise weight, and to be clad in Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23s, which should keep most riders happy.
The XSR900 is already pretty well decked out in the suspension and braking departments, with fully adjustable forks from KYB, alongside a fully adjustable KYB shock, which does have remote pre-load adjustment, for easier adjustment there.
We still see the Yamaha calipers of course - four-piston units - and a Brembo radial master-cylinder is run, and Yamaha also tell us the brake hoses have been optimised for braking control in sporty riding and hard stopping forces.
A new TFT is also being run in the retro-styled cockpit, and there’ll be four layout styles to choose from including one which mimics to an extent anyway a more analogue style dash. That’s nicely integrated in too, but naturally the switchblocks are fairly busy, especially on the left, due to features like cruise control.
Yamaha Ride Control offers Street, Rain and Sport modes, alongside two custom settings, and these cover power, intervention and lean sensitive rider aids settings, which can also be explored via the app. The IMU is used for the TC, slide control, front lift control, and Brake Control systems for reference.
The XSR900 also becomes the first Sport Heritage model to get the third-generation quickshift system.

Absolutely awesome, wish more manufacturers would take drastic aesthetic leaps like this. Super cool, you'd be crazy to get it in anything other than that red white and yellow
Wicked aye! I want to see it with the lower fairing and maybe a seat cowl too!
This bike is a tiny footstep compared to the 1986 Suzuki GSXR 750 which was an incredible leap by any criteria.
This is a poser's bike. The Suzook was the real thing!
Looks gorgeous. It's TRX850 meets TZR250 which is fine by me. Should be an amazing road biased sport bike.
Agree looks like a 89 tzr 250.
Absolutely love how Yamaha is tapping into their racing heritage something to be revered IMho 👍
I like it’s headlight. It’s not over decorated and It’s small bulb with powerful light.
A real knee trembler! So pleased that manufacturers can still pull one out of the hat like this 🤩😍
I’m liking both colour ways
Thanks Kris. I love it already. Now just need the same done from Suzuki and Honda to have the legendary trio covered.
That'd be so cool to see!
@@MotoJournoKris Been thinking about this further and what platform do you think would work best? Perhaps both of their new engines? The 750ish parallel twins? Pillion seat replaced with almost a racing rear, clip ons and a half fairing. The Honda in blue and white (Rothmans) or in the Repsol colours, the Suzuki would have two to choose from the Lucky Strike or Pepsi colourways. It would be a great tribute to Doohan, Rainey and Schwantz. As long as they have the yellow on the nose cone and each side of the tail. People could then simply make their chosen one personalised by adding the number(s) they like. So many memories, with each rider having a different style with zero nannies to assist like today.
Already seen a racing full faired 8S. Looks incredible 🔥
@@stevesane800 Nice.
This thrown together bike is nothing like the 1986 Suzuki GSXR 750 that stole the show.
This bike is a pretender. The Suzook was the REAL thing!
Absolute yes from me. All my bikes are of the era this bike mimics 750f1 duc. Gen 1 rsvr Gilera saturno 500. but as far as new bikes go this really really grabs my attention, I’ve ridden the original xsr900 and was taken with how good it was motor and handling but I didn’t gel with the front end look. This silver frame and swing arm and Marlboro colour scheme and body work fixes all that. Very very cool.
This Ducati 750f1 clone will be recognized for what is! Another Japanese fake copy. You wouldn't want to see your sister on one!
@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp a Japanese copy of an older Japanese bike by the same manufacturer. I have no issue with that. I never said this bike. Mimics the F1, rather it mimics the era in its design. Which I like ( as far as NEW bikes go) the xsr is a good bike I'm not too blinded by generational brand loyalty to admit it. Ride safe.
I say yay. It's different in that it's retro in the 1980's sense rather than the 1960s sense as all other neo retro bikes are. The 1980s are now a long time ago.
Granted I was born in the '80s, but even the 2000s seem quite a long way back now!
@@MotoJournoKris Sigh, the 80s don't seem that long ago to me. I was about your age in the 80s. Cheers Kris!
Awesome, Wicked. Nice Bike Yamaha. Can't wait to see one in a showroom. Thinking of ZX7R I once had but this is a bigger engine and likely better power to weight ratio these days. Got goosebumps watching this, would be awesome to test ride one. Looks great in the red/white. Make me think back to original Ducati Pantah friends rode.
Now that is just a beautiful bike
It looks fantastic & great seeing Rainey getting a gig👌
Thanks Kris, you need to get your hands on one now to make us all jealous. Awesome looking bike
Tell me about it!
The Black and Grey looks awesome. I'd like to see a Black and Yellow version like Kenny Roberts bikes as well, maybe for U.S. Market?
That'd be very cool to see, it'd make sense to run a few different classic racer paint schemes on this model to differentiate the year models and create some extra interest.
this plus xsr900 neo retro akras, match made in heaven
Yep the triples sound absolutely amazing with a good exhaust, like an Akro!
Definitely buying this bike
Really good looking but the short tail was a mistake. It looks stupid with the stalk on the back and even once it’s taken off it’s too short for the style. They should have just taken the opportunity to put a longer ‘retro’ tail on - maybe with a retro style sport bike trunk lol
Haha, I have a feeling that may have upset some people. It's definitely hard getting the tail right, with the XSR having a fairly... unique style there, shall we say.
We can some customized part to be made for this bike
Yep. Like the Thruxton it should have a proper solo /double seat options, with a detachable grab rail. Any designer worth their salt could have pulled it off
The Thruxton is a very, very different design, I'm not sure what works on that bike would transfer to the XSR honestly. I reckon that's why we ended up with this tail.@@HaggisPower
Have a look at Velocity Moto's RD LC XSR 900 seat/tail design. That works and would be a great option for the GP...@@MotoJournoKris
That is absolutely gorgeous!! Let’s hope they come to the states.
Would be insane if they aren't able to launch it in the US.
Absolute yay, I am the first on the preorder list at my local dealer
Wicked, congrats!
Absolute work of art. I love it. ❤❤❤
I want one, with a carburetor.
Thank god my credit is the best it’s ever been right now 😂 I’ve been wanting to buy a used XSR900 for years now but never wanted to sell my Harley to do it. But I honestly might just have to finance a GP now and have both.
Wicked, this definitely looks like the pick of the XSRs now!
A lower Fairing is definitely necassery and the akrapovic full system would make this my dream bike! Curious how it would look without those winglets on the front.
I reckon you could make winglets work, that'd be an interesting project.
Ive got the 23 XSR900. Yamaha are on the up. This bike proves it. Funnily enoughnim putting s2 concept bracelet bars and a seat cover on mine. Ill leave the screen option off
Love it! Kinda reminds Of the early homologated special OW01.
I've alwasy wanted an R9, since the seating position on the MT-09 is not for me. But this is even better. Thanks Yamaha!
Beautiful!!!
Looks amazing i want one
I'm 40 and ride a 2019 XSR900, im keen to grab one of these in Red White Yellow if they make it to Australia
They've got them listed on the Yamaha website already so I think it's a safe bet we're getting them!
Stunning!
Ahhh yes a 33” seat height for my 28” inseam ❤
I like the spin forged wheels.
Yep that's a cool little extra we're seeing from Yamaha.
can i add a top box ? panniers ? like more leg room; higher handbars vs a bit lower.
Yamaha offer some soft panniers and mounting brackets. No top box in genuine accessories, but Ventura look like they've got a setup for the tail, which could be run for a topbox, or rear luggage. Leg room I think you'd probably looking at a taller seat, although the GP has a more padded seat as far as I know. Handlebars I'm not sure about however!
If it had the dual circular head light I’d buy one. Pretty sick bike tho
That would look pretty amazing, you'd think someone would do a conversion kit!
Looks cool a little like my TZR 3ma from the 80s decked out in Marlboro 😊
I reckon that's what they were aiming for. Those old '80s bikes were just so iconic!
The other colour option should have been Gauloises [Sarron] blue that also raced in the 80's etc. That would be more relevant to this model than boring grey. Otherwise a great addition to the Yam fleet. Velocity Moto in the UK also do an 80's RD500LC body kit that fits straight on the existing XSR which looks awesome and will be more comfy than this GP inspired version as it retains the standard higher bars.
riding modes; quick shifter; cruse control ? tpms ?
All mentioned in the vid, except the TPMS which I don't think it has.
Bike of the year
it's definitely a bold look! i was never going to be the target demographic as a 2000s kinda girl, but id be really curious to see how the lower fairing looks! it feels kind of bare with the completely exposed engine. people have been talking for ages about an r9, i wonder if they'll take this engine and put it into a more modern sports package, or if this'll be it? thanks for the showcase as always 😄
Yea that's what I thought, it definitely needs the lower fairing to complete the look, and a seat cowl might help there too. I think if Yamaha have an R9 on the way, it'd make sense to launch this bike first, and then roll out the R9, which I'd assume may be a little more competitively priced, more like the MT-09.
@@MotoJournoKris they might have done half fairings as to not put off people who don't like or are intimidated by a full fairing " sport bike " . Ya know what I mean?
Definitely, it's a nice compromise which keeps everyone happy, as there's definitely people who'd buy a bike like this, but wouldn't touch full fairings. @@sladeb6036
The lower fairing is a bit skinny down the sides, and does look like a afterthought and not a full faired bike,
Great to hear they’re offering a full fairing kit for it.
They do? That would be amazing!
Not really, as it looks more like a afterthought than a fully faired
@@vwjapvideos5498 - After thought or not it still fits the definition
Does it have the Back slip Regulator like the 2024 mt09
Does have the slipper clutch.
The only thing this bike is missing is the Marlboro sponsorship😉
A lot of awesome racing in Marlboro colours, 2 and 4 wheels 👍
Maybe this is the R9 we've always wanted
Yea, also would make sense to release this first if an R9 comes later, but is more like the MT-09, with a more competitive price.
katana and this is the ultimate duo
what background music is that, in the begining?
That's Traversing by Godmode (from the YT media library).
thank you so much, good video!@@MotoJournoKris
Love it. But would prefer the gold wheels!
Need to find someone with an XSR900 willing to swap!
@@MotoJournoKris I had the same thought!
Is the red and white XSR900 a standard color?
I want a naked model with the same specifications as the GP
I'm not sure whether that colour will be extra to be honest, as I haven't seen pricing information yet. This does largely seem like a tweaked XSR900 with ergo changes though.
did they upgrade the mouse type wheel for tft page turning control. Looks like a cheap wheel to be easily broken on the std xsr900.
Switchblock/controls are visible at 1:18
As a guy that I mosty like retro looking motorcycles like triumphs, etc, I must say this one its not bad a all, the things that I would change in the design is a larger headlight, and an exhaust muffler on the side instead of that ugly underbelly exhaust. The normal exhaust would add a more classic retro look and maybe a slightly lower seat height.
Yea definitely agree there. The modern headlights have gotten very compact, but apart from on some of the very futuristic models, it doesn't always work really well, even if the throw of light is much much better.
Stunning looking bike, other stories are saying Europe only?
I think it's been confirmed for Europe, Japan and Australia. It just hasn't been confirmed for North America, as far as I know.
Wish it was available in the US. Bummed that it's not!!! 😔
Love it apart from where the exhaust is
I'm assuming you can fit all the XSR900 exhausts, although most are still run very low.
I’d love to upgrade to this if it wasn’t in Marlboro red and white. Tho I do enjoy the occasional Marlboro.
Not a fan of the grey-ish colour version? I'm hoping we get a few difference race livery options, like a different one each year kind of thing.
Now do the 700 twin and I might be interested .
The XSR700 would look amazing as a little retro racer!
the wheel color should have been light bronze not bright red
Agree
not listed for the USA :(
Dang it
Hopefully it's a delay, not just that you're missing out.
Finally! A Japanese manufacture takes a chance , Im hoping it gets released to Canada in 24, its looks like a special custom build , can't quite believe it.
Definitely something a bit special!
@@MotoJournoKris Another Japanese hit and a miss!
TRX 850 2.0 hahahahah. Maybe will sell 1,000!
I give it 2-years before it disappears from the Yamaha catalog.
Yamaha is famous for missing the boat entirely!
Reminds me of the early 90s half fairing Ducatis. Why Yammy won't bring this to the states with a federal compliant headlight is beyond me.
Would surely sell like crazy if they did.
Love it 😮❤
OK, I freely admit that I'm old & have forgotten more than I remember but for my money, Yamaha have built the only new bike I would actually buy.
I can hardly wait to see one in the flesh. I just hope my bank balance & licence can stand the strain...
That seems to be what a lot of people are thinking! Yamaha are definitely onto a winner with this one.
Looks really nice very similar to the 1989 3ma tzr Yamaha
hahahahaha - no resemblance at all my man!
Yes.just needs lower Marlboro fairing and it's a identical hahahah👌
Trx 900✊🔥🔥looks mean🤙trx 850 looks like👍
Is this an EU only bike? I'm a salesman and trying to acquire knowledge on this unit ASAP
I haven't seen anything regarding a US release yet unfortunately.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAYyy MEga YEAYYYYYYYYYYY only YEAAAYYYYYYYYYYY
Yea!
yamaha need to do something about cable management !!
Love it
I wait the futur GPZ 900 !! 🤣🤣
Should have aused ananalogue meter instead of digital one
That would have been cool, but I think too many people gripe about not getting a TFT these days!
New Retro neo-retro
Yay!!!, but funny the dark grey color just doesn’t do it for me.
It's definitely splitting opinions!
ヤバい!かっこいい!
one step closer to the R9
Yea I can't help but think with the GP released, the R9 should be very easy to deliver now.
how unlucky i am to buy the xsr900 a month ago just for this to release
Damn, you might be able to get a similar result with a fairing kit and some clip-ons. There's some racing/fairing kits available, although they aren't quite as nice as the GP to my eye.
yay.
It's perfect... We need a 500cc or 350 cc twin with a 270⁰ crank or 315⁰ crank same body styling as this xsr900WR.
For rebirth of the RD350 LC or rzv 500
They could update the R3, increase the capacity and then release an XSR350/400 GP perhaps? Feels like the R3 is due for an update, and that would be a good basis for it.
@@MotoJournoKris why do they insist on making the 180⁰ crank when the 270⁰ crank is an engine that PPL prefer.
I understand that the 315⁰ crank is difficult to make it smooth but why keep producing the 180⁰crank 300 cc engines . The mt07 has proven that Yamaha can make a sloppy bike and still sell in good numbers without updating the bike for years. As the engine is sweet with bad suspension and ugly looks.
Not sure on that one honestly, I know I really rate the 270⁰ crank bikes. @@TheINDIAN
@@MotoJournoKris don't you think that all Japanese manufacturers should make a combined effort and have an engine platform of a 450 - 350 cc 270⁰ or 315⁰ crank 40-55 bhp 40-50 Nm torque engine and chassis to match off road type dakar rally design and seperate on road with a classical old motorcycle body 60s design but not retro design .
Suspension USD and multilink rear monoshock. Under 175 kg weight.
Would definitely be cool to see.@@TheINDIAN
Very cool looking, from an "older" rider🖕Wouldn't mind a big poster of it to hang on my garage wall.
There's definitely some businesses that do that kind of thing. Some even without permission for the images!
Pass ill keep my heritage blue all day
Perfect look, appart from the tail section that looks too small...
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
The red looks like Ironman 😂
Good point mate. Obvious now you mention it🤣
Just needs a little more gold!
Great design. More successful thing I think is how they turned that ugly xsr to this beauty. Absolutely better job than designing a new bike 👏👏
I doubt I'll ever see one of these in the wild... if I do, it will be roosting.
Pass. If it had a two stroke motor I would be a buyer.
I think we're out of luck there unfortunately.
Peut etre un peu plus de Watts et moins de poids pour lutter contre la concurrence surtout des motos européennes
I reckon they are leaning quite a bit on the race livery for appeal!
not a fan of the stubby tail section. Should be a bit longer to look more like the YZR500
Someone might make a custom seat cowl to do that, as I think a lot of riders agree with you.
dammit yamaha YZF r9 where is it!!!
Has to be on the way, right?!?
😍😍😍🙏🇫🇷
オートバイのタンクは、外観造形の中で最も美しいところ。最近は、そこを分割したり、線を入れるというのは 私は好きでない。
Yep the tank is a real focus point. The one-piece tanks are nicer to see, as opposed to just plastic covers, especially of the multi-part variety.
Nur eine Lackierung macht noch keine 500ccm 2takter🙇🤷♂️.
Lucky no one said it was a 500 cc two-stroke.
I hate fairings. Nick J
Yea they aren't for everyone!
It's a nay for me. I mean kudos to Yamaha for trying different versions of the XSR. But If it actually looked like the race bike with modern electronics and a more user-friendly ride, I would buy it right now. But this is just a marketing ploy to tempt riders who don't want a real sports bike. And no matter what skin you put on it it's still a XSR900 underneath So, it's a modern interpretation of a race bike, but watered down with an even uglier bodywork. it lives in no man's land like the Suzuki Katana.
Looks are always subjective! Personally I LOVE the Katana. If I could have a second bike, that’ll be it. It’s a great road bike.
Hard disagree I have Italian classics Ducati 750 F1 a mint rsv mille R and some small Italian track bikes and I am totally making space in my shed for this. The xsr900 motor is a great platform and a very sweet handling package. no one is saying it’s a race bike but a very good homage to one and it appeals to us of an age that don’t like transformer styling because we are a bit older. Or to younger riders with good taste :)
@@paulred158 Hey I love the real 90s racing classics like the Kawasaki ZX7R, Honda SP2 and I ride a Ducati, so I am very much a child of the 90s and love the look of bikes from that time. I just think the GP900 is something the Yamaha marketing department threw together to appeal to everyone and in doing so lost some of the nostalgia of bikes from that time. Before you disagree with me have a look at a kit that's available for the 2023 XSR900 by a UK bodywork company Velocity moto. Now that is a faithful representation of a retro style race bike faithful to a racing classic the Yamaha RD500. ruclips.net/video/86rCs6uPqdQ/видео.html. And it is approved from Yamaha and can be had from selected dealers in the UK. See Lamb Chop rides review..
Disgusting 70's style tail. A tail style Rainey' s bike would be fantastic
vel-o-che
Nobody wants a Ducati clone ripoff!
These things will sell as well as Yamaha's clone Harley Davidson ripoffs!
Not very well!
Ducati will only break even with Wayne Rainey's personal MotoGP title record (with Yamaha) this year. Not sure what Yamaha would be ripping off there.
The downfall of Yamaha
Its the motorcycle equivalent of trying too hard which makes it uncool.
looks crap
