      I still gotta play the GB/GBC Zelda games. I started Link's Awakening DX on my GBA Flash Cart, but apparently GBC emulation on it is jank and a lot of GBC games either break, or don't save. So I'm gonna have to resort to actual like, normal emulation for now until I can grab a GB/GBC flash cart.
      I love owning physical games, but I just can't afford it anymore. I have what I have, which is a small handful of my old GB/GBC/GBA games, along with my old Pokemon Gold GBC, a couple Grey Brick Game Boys, and a GBASP.

    i thought this was really well scripted and narrated, and had good transitions. the nostalgia you conveyed definitely made me reflect on my own, and the personal touches like how you've introduced gaming to your kids, and balancing life / work and not really having as much time for longer games also struck a cord. also enjoyable seeing the "nerdier" side of things like modding your own system

    Randomly stumbled on this video and just have to say, you did a great job talking about why and how these retro games leave such an impression on us. When I was around 6 or 7, my mom bought me the original classic gameboy with Link's Awakening. I'd been seeing the commercials and begging for a gameboy. I played that game constantly but was never able to finish it because I didn't really understand it. But I loved every minute of it anyway. It was literally my first video game ever. When I finally picked it up and played it again a good two decades later and beat it, I was over the moon, haha.

      I asked around to see if it was worth screen-modding my Game Boy Color. Would love to have a back-lit GBC for when I get a GB/GBC flash cart. But everyone said I shouldn't since it's a Pokemon Gold GBC (not amazing condition but it still works). Everyone was telling me it'd probably be more worthwhile to buy a pre-made back-lit GBC, or buy a secondhand generic GBC and get THAT modded instead.

    • @8BitGlitch79

      @@8BitGlitch79 Oh, I have a GBASP 101. It's great. It's more so that if I have a Flash Cart for GB/GBC, I'd rather have a dedicated thing to play it on, instead of swapping flash carts back and forth between GB/GBC and GBA.
      Wouldn't even be an issue if the GBA Flash Cart could do Game Boy Color properly, but it can't.

    I love how "Playing Game Boy for 30 days" sounds like a challenge, especially since multiple similar videos have popped up on RUclips. Where as, when I was a kid, I'd do that just for fun. I grew up with Game Boy and Game Boy color (and eventually a GBA down the line). I had worm lights, carrying cases, hundreds of those little individual game holders, screen magnifiers, battery packs, and an entire bag full of link cables. I spent a huge chunk of my childhood playing nothing but Game Boy. Especially since my friend down the street had one too, and we used to battle and trade Pokemon.
    Hell, I still regularly play Game Boy. I still have my old Pokemon Gold Game Boy Color, and even a couple old grey DMGs lying around. Plus a good handful of games. But to be perfectly honest, I play via emulation more than anything. I have my emulator set up to use a Super Game Boy border and a TV-Out shader to make it look and and feel like I'm playing on a real Super Game Boy. I even made a custom Super Game Boy Color border so it didn't feel out of place when I played GBC games. And on the GBA side of things, I use a Gamecube Game Boy Player border. Though I also have a GBA Flash Cart so I still use my real GBA too. I plan to get a GB/GBC Flash Cart eventually when I can afford to spare $60.
    I'd love to have a whole collection of Game Boy games, but I just can't afford it. I'm super broke nowadays. So, emulation and flash carts will have to do. But hey, I'm still playing and enjoying the games.

    • @ChronikSpartan
      @ChronikSpartan  3 года назад

      I totally know what you mean mate. I was pretty much the same. 90% of my childhood gaming was Game Boy. With magnifying lights, game cases and stealing batteries from remotes 😂
      I guess the thing is now times have moved on, and although I love playing Game Boy, it's not exclusive. Knowing that I could pick up a PS5 controller or my PS Vita is such a temptation.
      Emulation is definitely a great choice, have you ever considered some of the emulation handhelds? That's how I play most of my emulated Game Boy games.
      I love that you've gone with the original aesthetic, all those things really do add up to make it a more genuine experience.
      Nice one mate!

    • @TXFDA
      @TXFDA 3 года назад

      @@ChronikSpartan I've thought about an emulation handheld, but they're always outta my price range. Plus they come out so often, I wouldn't even know where to begin. They seem neat though. If I ever managed to get one, it'd get a lot of use, that's for sure.

    • @ChronikSpartan
      @ChronikSpartan  3 года назад

      There are loads and they keep getting better and better. The good thing is about how frequent they are is that they keep pushing for more modern level emulation like PS2 etc, which means the good Gameboy level and 16 bit emulators get cheaper. RG351 is brilliant for around the $80 mark. PocketGo is good for the $40 mark. I've done some videos about both. Equally the RetroDodo channel is good for finding out about some of the more obscure options out there.

      A year later, I finally got myself an emulation handheld. The Retroid Pocket 2+. Loving that I can get the rumble to work for Pokemon Pinball.

    To be fair, we never played these games 100% solo back in the day. You'd share rumors and tips at school, you'd find codebooks and books with "secrets and codes for 101 gameboy games" that were like magical grimoire we could pull out to solve our friends problems in a game by writing down a code he needed for something.
    That's how we all got tricked by the Mew trick in pokemon and a few other hoaxes, it was part of the word-of-mouth culture that got us through these games. It was a whole community growing up.
    So don't respect us too hard, we just got our tips through other sources, and we always had CheatPlanet and GameFAQs back then when things got too hard.
    I did get a walkthrough for Oracle of Ages, and I won't lie, totally worth it because that game was loaded with cool stuff like the magic rings and the lore and artwork made it such a great spectacle.

    Hats off to you mate. I've been into retro gaming for years, I remember when the odroid go came out and that was the first proper backlit Gameboy like console (besides the sp) I have modded gameboys for years and own some impressive IPS backlit gameboys of all gens. I have wanted to do the challenge since forge labs video, but I've always backed out from weakness. I plan on doing the challenge still but as to when is a mystery to me haha! I keep weighing up DMG vs GBC vs GBA.
    DMG seems like the go to for its size and I have an IPS screen for it, but GBC also seems pretty nice having that colour option as well as a plethora of different game choices. I think trying an un backlit screen could be pretty cool too! I'll set a course of rules and hopefully complete the challenge

    • @ChronikSpartan
      @ChronikSpartan  3 года назад

      Thanks bro! The backlights do make such a wonderful difference. But honestly once you jump back into an unmodded DMG it's so addictive!
      You'll definitely have a great time doing it. I'd recommend going with whatever enables you a decent variety of games as that is the biggest challenge.

A lesson to all dads... show enthusiasm in what your son/daughter are interested in you which means not only could you discover a new hobby or passion but life long memories "pit fighter is a game that always makes me think about my dad.. it reminds me of how how would always dive me to the local cinema or arcade". Such memory and kindness cause shared compassion.
    Amiga Pit Fighter was terrible from what I remember. Absolutely loved it though, down to the realistic sprites (per -Mortal Kombat) and it felt so naughty playing in a underground Fight Club (prior to the bastion of rebellion that GTA1 came to represent).. the real inspiration behind Chuck Palahniuk's Book/Film. Final Fantasy Legends turned out to be the firs FF game I ever played.. didn't release until about a decade or two after finishing FFVII-IX.
    Any thanks for the great video. Nostalgia an good vibes all round

    The thing about the 30 Day Game Boy challenge is... it seems like it would only be hard for people that are semi-addicted to modern gaming and would miss it. I feel like for me, it's more of a challenge to limit myself to playing a modern console with only newer games available, especially if I make it only new releases rather than remakes of games I like. It's way too tempting to want to spend all my gaming time reliving my childhood and sometimes it feels like I have to force myself to adapt to new games and learn to appreciate them rather than just play the old ones. Like, if you are into retro gaming, I am curious what a 30-day PS5 challenge would feel like. How much would you miss being able to go back to the old games after that?

    • @ChronikSpartan

    Fun fact about the battery life. When the Gameboy Pocket was introduced, it got the same battery life as the original Gameboy, but with two AAA batteries instead of four AA batteries. How? There were no changes to the hardware to improve it. Well, alkalines got popular so they just quoted the battery life with alkalines. I find it so strange that someone with 30 or so years of video game experience is unable to complete Super Mario Land. That game is only 12 levels long. But I do have some advice to give you.

    You can do it.

      Haha, brilliant! I like that 😁
      In my defence I was homeschooling the kids back then so had many distractions as my excuse 😅

    I had so many different game boy when I was a child coming up in the '90s. I would even trade my smartphone right now for a Game Boy. Playing game on your phone is not so cool like playing game on your game boys. When I was 8 years old I was really good with fixing electrical stuff I even got to buy one with damage and then fix it back they're pretty freaking strong.

      That's awesome mate. Great memories of the Gameboy and so cool you were able to fix one when you were younger!

    I had an NES when the original gameboy handheld came out. I wanted the gameboy soo bad but my parents refused since I already had an NES was their rationale. I am considering buying one online.

      Haha! Your parent sound like my parents. Had to persuade them for ages that a Mega Drive was not a NES. lol

      Thanks mate! I'm planning on doing another one in the future so they will definitely be contenders for which console I play 😉 NES would definitely be a fun one to try!

    Mate, long time no talk, im revisiting this video now to start my dmg challenge (i was coffee and pixels on ig) i deleted all my social media, tomorrow there will be no phone use (outside of emergency texts and calls) youtube use, or any console use. Just my ips dmg and a lot of reading. Not sure if itll go on a month but i mean a month break from the world would be pretty epic i think!
