Hey Sparky, question about polyspan? Should the capstrips have a small slight radius on them? Or should I leave that edge sharp before covering? Thanks
I've used polyspan and I like it but haven't figure out how to use dye with the dope to bring a bit of color. Have any videos perhaps explaining how it is done without leaving streaks.
Thank you for your videos - they are awesome. When preparing a fabric covered wing for paint, how do you go about sanding the open bays and around cap strips. I am currently working on a fabric covered wing and tried gently sanding out some dust and dirt from the brushed on dope with 400 sandpaper, but of course I damaged the weave and not sure what to do next.
Without seeing the repair needed it is hard to articulate the exact course of action needed to facilitate the repair. Now from a basic knowledge I have of such repairs, I would first make sure there is enough dope on the fabric then if there is no hole in the covering I would just add more coats of dope to the area. Next, if you view my Minado paint repair I show a procedure to fix a hole. Fix the repair before going any further and you will never see it in its finished state.
I sand open bays with 320 paper cut in one-inch strips. Stay away from cap strips. Be sure you have enough Dope on the covering so you have something to sand. I sand dey many sand wet so it's your choice.
I'm going to try to save it, I put a very light coat of CA over the area, then I am going to try a few more coats of dope. I notice on your videos you avoid putting primer in the open bay areas - I would presume to save weight and to avoid too much sanding.
How much does the top overlap the bottom layer at the tips and around the perimeter? Do you have to slice through the polyspan top later around the tip bends where it tucks under, or is there a way to shrink it like you would MonoKote to avoid puckers? Thanks!
You mentioned several times you must have the shiny side up or its over but you dont elaborate on what its over means, explain what happens if shiny side is down?????????
Always round out caps,LE and TE sheeting
Excellent job, thanks for sharing, really useful video
Thanks for sharing your skill and experience, I wonder how polyspan compares with other covering materials for weight?.
Good question! Poly span takes more dope to fill it so it's heavy
@@Stunthangar ok thanks for that.

Thanks! Very very useful!
You're welcome
Hey Sparky, was the wing bare wood before you started the poly span or did you have a coat of dope already on the wood before applying the poly span?
3 Coats of clear dope on the bare wood

No primer necessary for open bays and yes you have that right.

The puckers are cut off and ironed down. Any small puckers left are sanded and doped over and smoothed out. It makes the seam invisible.
Hi what did you put on the bare wing frame before the polyspan please
Many thanks trevor from england
butyrate dope
You mentioned several times you must have the shiny side up or its over but you dont elaborate on what its over means, explain what happens if shiny side is down?????????
It means you will have fuzzies you wont be able to control them without a ton of dope added
