    My dad was a sound editor and he was obsessed with recording and evolving sounds...much of his work (Blade Runner, Superman, Return to Oz to namedrop a few gems) is littered with found-sound work all warped and reformed in a purely analogue way with tape manipulation and rerecording. You'd probably never know it. He didn't have to do it. But he did, and he did it for the pure joy of just toying with sounds and sonic textures. I wish he'd had an OP-1...he'd have loved the tapey workflow and would have been joining in :)

      I've always thought of sampling a romantic idea. Crate digging and finding that perfect nugget of greatness to use like a treasure hunt, and then toiling over it like a mad scientist. Sounds like a pretty radical dad to have. Do you dabble in the arts?

      That's it exactly...am on a similar path to yourself in terms of coming from guitar/bass/drums but tinkering in the samplage. My day job is (despite his warning to "never go near an edit suite again") in the dark arts...but am on the run from any and all screens these days :) Last week I became obsessed with the sounds of magnetic closing mechanisms...ended up recording a whole bunch and messing with them. So yes...his ghost lives on in my obsessions. He'd have dug your vids a heck of a lot actually!

    I made both ‘Every Day is Exactly the Same’ and ‘The Day the Whole World Went Away’ on the field in the last month. Trent Reznor samples so much unique isht that it inspired me. So besides guitar,bass and some piano (which I resampled all of those) I sampled so many other things to remake those songs. Used the roland e-4 for vocals. The op-1 field is magical.

      I always use the vocoder with the mix turned all the way to the red dot and use the reverb of the vocoder to effect my clean tone. Not sure I have much reverb on the guitar this time around, but it’s always good to have the option. If I remember correctly, I recorded 2 takes and panned each one to opposite sides.

    Hey Novak, I love your videos on RUclips and find it the best op1 field content I can find. I am seriously considering getting one to try and write songs. I play guitar and use pedals. I also have the chroma console and microcosm and love them. Making songs on a looper isn’t the best lol. I hate computers and the idea of using a DAW is a big turn off. I like the physical aspect of the op1. I can’t find any real information on recording electric guitar into the op1 like you and a guy called Indian runner do. Are you using the output jack of the amp into the op1 ? Thanks would love to know how you get such clean recordings with pedals

    • @NovakTheEnjoyer
      @NovakTheEnjoyer  3 месяца назад

      @@Skiptothebeat007 hey, thanks so much for watching! We’re in the same boat! 😃
      As far as the guitar is concerned, I don’t plug the output of an amplifier in to the OP1. I go straight in from the guitar for a clean tone, or I take whatever effect pedals I’m using and go straight into the line in off the OP1 from those. If I use an amplifier with either the base or guitar, I mic it every time.
      Loopers are fun for about 30 seconds. That being said, the workflow of the OP1 is like having a looper where you can see everything you’re doing. This changes everything for me because expanding on a loop becomes possible and manageable.
      Put all this together with the immediacy that you are given access to every aspect of instrumentation and songwriting in a simplistic design makes it the only thing I need.
      From the sound of it, the OP one would probably be a good choice for you. You can always return it if you don’t like it, but if it changes your life half as much as it changed mine, it’s worth twice the price.

      How does the guitar get a electric get a loud enough sound with our an amp. Does the op1 have a built in preamp? Also some effects like the drive section on the chroma console can introduce pickup up noise from my telecaster single coils. Does that happen when straight plugged in or is there a gate pedal or something you use ? Ya not being able to see what’s going on in the loop is the hardest part but with a screen and with time points would be a game changer. Despite people saying the op1 has so many limitations the options look endless to me lol coming from someone who has never used a daw.

    My friend, just wanted to say I'm a huge fan and fellow op-1 musician! I'm having trouble figuring out what's the best way to gain-stage on the field... I mean, are you recording everything without the master limiter/comp and then when ''bouncing'' to the computer adding it back up? or do you keep everything kinda low (the mixer on a 50ish level) so you can have some head-room to work with? Thank you so much for your art and your videos, it really inspired me to become a better musician!

    • @NovakTheEnjoyer
      @NovakTheEnjoyer  3 месяца назад +4

      Hey, thanks for watching!! I don’t do anything to the music outside of the OP1F. I record everything in it and mix regardless of the volumes. Sometimes the tracks end up really low when all is said and done, but I pump everything up with the Drive on the Master Compressor. If things end up being too low, I do this:
      1. Find the quiet track, or recording
      2. Lift/drop to copy it
      3. Find a spot beyond the end of the song
      3. Turn red input gain on the tape down low
      4. Shift+drop (merge drop). It will drop louder.
      5. Lift the single take you want
      6. Go back and replace your low volume recording with your new louder one.

I did try to clean up the talking head dialogue with a Desser and an LA2A Compressor, but as far as the music goes, I don’t touch it with anything outside of the OP1. Performing the mix onto the record makes it possible to ride the mixer in case there are some loud spots in the mix.
