In all fairness to Otis, shutting down the lift if a fault is detected can be useful in areas full of children such as school lifts. But yeah, those features should be able to be disabled in the logic and it could do with a proper chassis.
When i safety break the otis gen2 from inside goes the lift out of service? Because when i safety break the lift at leveling speed it makes a hard stop and the lift opens the doors.
I always wondered how evacuation on a MRL lift worked, thanks for filming it. Can you try to film the equivalent for a generic MRL lift (I suspect they have not put as much thought into it).
Beno, this lift is at your university, i know this because i installed this lift in 2014 in December. You should be very careful with what you are doing, despite some clear knowledge, there is alot you don't know, and are putting yourself in danger, not to mention the legal ramifications if you have a accident. Even so, i enjoy your videos 😂 but ffs be careful
There must have been a short circuit in the lighting. That thin cord you pulled probably was a shorted light. That's why the breaker kept tripping/buzzing.
Hey Beno I know a lot about the Otis Gen2 I even know about 'ReGen Drive' which did the drive for the lift. Did you know not just the lift can generate electricity but it is even clean energy
Using a motor as a generator is nothing new or special in any way. All motors can act as a generator by putting the motor in a circuit where the motor would act as the power supply. Using a VF drive to generate from the motor is also nothing special. All modern VF drives will seamlessly which from using power to generating power when the load is putting force on the motor to increase its speed faster than the speed it is set to. There is nothing about the gen2 that is in anyway better than any other lift.
@@benolifts there is much about the Otis GEN2 that is better than other lifts, hence why schindler and now TKE outright copied the belted hoist design... I could go on with PULSE, etc...

Wow, thank you Ben for unveiling the OTIS Gen2 systems. I knew OTIS Gen2 is a very safe lift and that it actually can detect unauthorized shaft door openings. The menue screen can only be operated with a proprietary communication software. This is the reason why so many generic companies actually refuse to maintain OTIS Gen2 lifts. They can't access the communication ports of the software and therefore, not perform all the safety tests required on regular maintenance. Disadvantage for the owner lift is quite obvious: He doesnt have got freedom of choice to find a cheaper maintenance company. Basic operations like emergency however, can also be done by generic companies - UNLIKE the newest Schindler lifts! These are even more restricted than the actual OTIS Gen2 system as far as I can see, even the basic functions such as the engineer mode is restricted - this is what got to know from a lift engineer who got a Schindler 5300 maintenance offered but declined as he can't even do the very basic maintenance operations. However, it seems that not all Schindler 3x or 5x are like that. But they are in Germany. RailCarADDE got one of them at his home, however, this one can not detect unauthorized shaft door openings. In Turkey I saw a Schindler 5300 that has been heavily modernized generic-style. Totally unexpected as I thought the Schindler system is too restrictive for a generic company to modernize it. But probably not in Turkey :)
I can't for the life of me get the car top controls to respond on a 2012 installed gen2. Have you seen the NORM/INSP jumpers in any logic cabinet? Strangely this one does in addition to the car controls in the cabinet also, but even under full inspection mode (INSP on cabinet switch, INSP jumper moved over and INSP on car top switched over) it refuses to manually move. Why do gen2's have to be such a pain in the ass?!
I found one where a fence had to be put up for inspection to work. I take it inspection mode still works, it is just that it refuses to move on inspection? It would be very dangerous for it to not enter inspection. I have found a kone power disc that refused to move on inspection. I still surfed it but it was rather dodgy. My friend got injured on an ecodisc that refused to move on inspection. He attempted to climb the shaft to get out. The lift was on stop but he left it in normal. It detected a fault and went downwards to free trapped passengers. This lift must have been wired wrong. My friend was left holding on with the lift miles below. He managed to get out but cut his hands on sharp doors. I have never yet seen a lift that stays in normal when the inspection switch is switched.
I'll have to have another look. Yeah it's ironic refusing to let us ride it on inspection makes it much riskier and dangerous! Luckily he got out. Funny thing is this gen2 will let me move the car no problem under inspection from the cabinet controls but absolutely nothing with car top. Thanks for the fence idea, but there's nothing like that, but I'll check for other interlocks. There's no anti-surf, as I still got a full speed ride after tricking the logic I got off (e-stop button worked fine to halt lift between floors to get out). Silly fucking gen2's!

We were under the assumption that it's a reputed company and they might stick to their timelines and safety precautions but it was a lesson hard learnt for us.
If you are a developer or a builder or just want a lift for your home, my Lawyers advice has been to make provisions for:
1. Delays upto 12 weeks from the promised date of completion. Almost always include a liquidated damages clause if you foresee a significant consequential loss from delay of delivery or execution.
2. Inadvertent 3rd party claims which might occur. Please note that Otis's contract MIGHT limit the contract value so the developer/builder might be held accountable for 3rd party claims.
Eg of accidents from Otis are listed below:

OTIS MIGHT CONTRACTUALLY LIMIT THIRD PARTY CLAIMS- PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK.
