My first landings on an Airbus A320

  • We did landing training on the D-ABNY (A320) in Rostock-Laage (ETNL/RLG), Germany. After 6 touch and goes we were released for the line flights. This base training is necessary after the typerating on the simulator. The traffic patterns where all flown by hand. No autopilot during training.
    We had a great time on the aircraft. It was a lot of fun, flying that amazing plane in real for the first time!

      @@rougedog8111 I dont know to which pilot you were talking but thats just not true. Of course TO and Landing are dynamic situations but its not like driving a bus! You are always focused which is even more difficult when the AP does the job. You are always aware of your position and where to land in case of emergency or major system failures. This is the hard part. The fun begins with troubleshooting midair or in dynamic situations like TO and landing...In fact you cant just pull to the right and stop the bus to look whats the problem and every PAX is safe. You have to solve problems with your FO or FC while the plane shoots through the air with 800kph+.

    Base training is always exciting, as I heard :) It's the first real aircraft after the sim, it is somewhat (or a lot) different than the sim, and there is always a chance for something not going as planned, such as rough landings. I heard it from a pilot who was participating in these on the jumpseat for safety reasons (just in case the captain becomes incapacitated).

    • @Doggepe
      @Doggepe 2 года назад +9

      I thought the 737 was very close to the sim, rough landings are felt for sure in the sim as well, but of course a difference when it's actually real life haha

      @OmnipotentEnt 2 года назад +10

      @@Doggepe I think the psychological factor of "oh wow, I'm in control of the real thing now" comes into play too! Such a cool video! I have no intent to become a professional pilot but I did try out an A320 full motion sim and can recommend that to everyone who enjoys this stuff!
    And, funnily enough, compared to my landings on the PC, it was rather easy to control and land. The connection to the aircraft is much better. I can only imagine how much better the actual plane must feel, real dream come true for you!

      The benefit on the real aircraft (or also in a full-motion sim) is, that you can feel the aircraft. When preparing for takeoff or landing, I always tighten the fasten seatbelts to get a good connection to aircraft’s motion. Feeling the aircraft is very important!

    So when doing this are you flying a pattern just like we would be in a GA? Presumably the pattern is much larger lol. Wonder if you have to setup the MCDU in some special way to make it happy when you do this?

    • @TobiasLauner
      @TobiasLauner  9 месяцев назад

      You mainly fly raw data. Therefore you don’t have to configure the MCDU

  • @SeverMican
    @SeverMican 4 года назад +14

    Just curious, after you touch down how long do you wait until you apply TO/GA power? I see that the plane trims itself after landing, do you usually wait until the trim wheel stops turning? Also, what flap setting did you use for the landings?

    • @Skyward2793
      @Skyward2793 3 года назад +12

      The instructor has to disarm spoilers put flaps the flaps up and make sure trim is in the green band. After that he says go that’s when the trainee applies TOGA. Till then the trainee is suppose to maintain centreline and not look inside what the instructor is doing.

    • @BPPUK
      @BPPUK 2 года назад +4

      he has to wait for flaps 1 and he can go then.

    • @TobiasLauner
      @TobiasLauner  2 года назад +15

      That‘s correct. Spoilers were disarmed. So the Captain retrimed the aircraft. Meanwhile, I set 50% thrust to stabilize the engines, as you do it on every takeoff and kept aircraft on centerline. When all flaps travelled to 1+F, trim was set correct and engines were stabilized, I got the call to set TOGA again.

    • @lbowsk
      @lbowsk 2 года назад

      @Floyd. B There is almost zero spool time on the engines on an A320. The only reason to delay is to get the flaps up and the trim reset. The plane is already hauling ass and needs very little power to get to takeoff speeds.

      *CONFIG* SLATS (FLAPS) NOT IN T.O CONFIG, triggered by setting FLX/MCT or TOGA thrust or pressing the T.O CONFIG pb with incorrect flap config and inhibited during flight phases 5, 6, 7 and 8. What’s happening here is that the aircraft is on the ground above 80 knots and as this warning is inhibited during phase 8, the aircraft thinks its in phase 4 and as soon as it lifts off, the warning is inhibited as it is in phase 5.

    Hi, great video and thanks for sharing.
    Two questions if you don’t mind
    1) why were you always approximately 20-30ft over threshold on every approach, is that a base training technique?
    2) why did the instructor make dual inputs rather than taking over ? Not that I saw anything wrong with your flares, did he say why?
    Please don’t take my questions as a criticism, I’m just curious
    Thanks

    • @TobiasLauner
      @TobiasLauner  Год назад

      1) To be honest… Haven’t realized the height over threshold. We tried to touchdown quite firmly, because we had to reconfigure the aircraft for takeoff again during the role.
      2) The thing is, that you don’t feel the inputs on the other stick. So the trainer might give a short input before he realizes, that I did the same. Absolutely ok, instead of taking over the control. I know, that some others see it differently here 😉
