As someone who uses makeup, lightly scraping the makeup onto a piece of paper or a tissue ahead of time would work better. As a resin artist, adding it in small increments until you get your preferred saturation would conserve your pigments. As a Dollar Tree aficionado, grabbing the loose powder eyeshadows works even better although they make fewer colors. You just pop the bottom off and instant mica powder. Glitter is glitter, whether you buy it from Dollar Tree or some expensive boutique-with the sole exception of biodegradable glitter, which is better for the planet.
This is amazing! I was about to throw out my 88 colour eyeshadow palette that I’ve only used once but saw this. I ordered my first set of resin and mould but have no pigments yet. After watching this I now have 88 colours to use!
Yup. Probably not as strong in colour as actual pigments made for resin but they are definitely a good thing to start with, and cheap enough to buy. And ask your friends for their unwanted make-up to save more money.
@@NumberOneDragon Powdered cheese? That is not one I'd have thought of. Tho I can understand Kool-Aid as I've seen people dye their hair with that stuff!
@@amethyst1826 Really anything in powdered form except gun powder. Lol. Anything affected by heat. Just can't add too much of any additives or it will change the chemical reactions.
They look just as good as the expensive pigments! I never buy the expensive glitter, dollar store and Michaels look exactly the same as the pricey kind, now I’ll be trying some eyeshadow too. Thanks for the info!
I've been doing this for years to either create a custom shade and/ or to get rid of eyeshadows and powder highlighters that I never use and were only going to be thrown away and wasted anyway. Most eyeshadows are mostly mica with other additives anyway so if you have some cheap, crappy or old makeup lying about that's destined for the bin don't chuck it use it in place of plain mica which can be expensive and often a pain in the butt that requires a specialty shop for hobbies, arts and crafts etc.
Make-up, especially eyeshadows/powders are mica powders. They may not be as strong as the actual mica powders sold for use in resin, but they definitely save us a whole load of money when we're starting out, and you can stick to these if you prefer!! Ask your friends & family for their old make-up, buy 2nd hand online, get cheap at Superdrug and £/$ shops. Don't put in too much glitter or it will take a lot longer to cure! 😆😆
In the eyeshadow area there are also little containers about two inches tall, they come in Gold, Purple, Pink, While, And black. The inside is loose powder, and they work like Mica pigments.
Oh my goodness! What a great and budget-friendly idea! I just started doing resin a few months ago, and I love it. This is a great tip, and I will try this.
I only use eye shadows from the dollar tree in my resin projects. The loose powders are best. When using the pallets you have to be sure to crush it up good or it'll cure with chunks. I usually use a tiny mixing spoon to scrape it in...
This is awesome I was about to buy 30 dollars worth of pigment but I have multiple eyeshadow palettes I have only used once it’s about to save me so much
I use eyeshadow and glitter a lot and they mix really well. Eyeshadow is mainly mica so you will get the same effect. I don't know why your glitter wasn't mixed with the eyeshadow, that looked strange. Going right back to the 1970's I used eyeshadow as paint when making cards
I get the feeling I'll be doing good when I get started in resin again (after the holidays) I have a whole bucket of mica that we got at a mica mine and I can turn it into powder easily since it's almost already powder. All I will need is the color added !
I have used dollar tree eye shadow before when I needed a specific color and it works decent. U dont need to buy expensive pigments to make cool resin art
all the colors resin are cool.. they are only $1.00 a pack of eye shadows & glitter from the $ tree store.. how much on average does it cost for mica on eBay ?? been curious about doing resin art, so I would be a beginner. :) newbie.

They came out very well. What will you do with them now? I have been making sample dots with all my various alcohol inks and colorants, using a half sphere silicon mold. I have also found a gemstone shaped silicone mold at my local craft store which I might use int he future since I can make more than 6 at a time, which is all the spheres I can do at once. I thin glue them to a piece of foam filled craft board, the kind used for science fair projects and which I cut tot he size of a notebook. They are numbered on the front, and the numbers and named of the colorant are printed out and glued to the back. Makes for a great reference when doing projects. p.s. Blue-green is usually called "teal" and brownish-red is mauve. :) Happy resining!
Claro uno de los pigmentos utilizados en cosméticos es la MICA. Por tanto una manera barata de dar color a la resina es aprovechar aquellos cosméticos que no se van a usar ….
‘Official’ pigments are (theoretically) certified for purity of color and amount of mica. Makeup contains less pure mica and more stuff to make it stay on skin while remaining safely non-toxic/non-absorbent. I wanna try lipstick as a colorant, personally. Loads of colors and shades there and should be a spread even at a dollar store
www.alumilite.com/ Be sure to know what you're buying. Some of the alumilite products are specifically designed for wood and wood turning epoxies. They can be difficult to work with and expensive, but very good for their intended purpose.
I have lots of leftover Holi powder, which I believe is a mix of powder pigment and cornstarch. Does anyone know if this would work in resin? Thank you.
I hope you're wearing a respirator. It doesn't sound like you are or that you recorded your voice afterwards but resin vapor, especially epoxy resin vapor is extremely hazardous to breath in. That seems to be a fact that resin makers have been neglecting to warm people about
Why didn't you use the resin in molds? At least you could have gotten something out of it. That's a lot of ways resin, that stuff is expensive. You could have made the whole alphabet with all that resin, lol.

When I first started, I tried Kool-aid, powdered cheese, cocoa, fingernail polish, makeup. They all work as long as you don't use too much.

Does it change shades or do anything unexpected over time ? I’m scared to use it and it end up embarrassing me as the product ages lol
It goes to show you Can Use other not so expensive additives to your resins. I’ve spent far too much, and I’m glad you’re showing this!

Any powder make-up. And you can mix to come up with your own shades!

Can you make video how to use dollar tree eye shadow/micapowder mix in resin and make the paintings please very help full
You could put a hole in the rectangles after you detach and clean them for pendant bezels
Got ideas for changing color of Epoxy putty
I'm new to this and watching your video was very informative and helpful. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing this experiment I use those exact things to mix with my acrylic powder when I do my nails now I know I can mix them in my resin

I wonder would boggo copier machine toner create a deep black? Dunno, but it sounds plausible.
Great! ...love using things which can do 'double duty'
tyfs this! xoxo
I love this..but can i ask? How to mix styrene monomer, clear premixed and hardener..Thank u and Merry Christmas
Hi Joy, I'm afraid I don't have experience with styrene.

Does it take much longer to cure when using eyeshadow?
Thanks for the tips and tricks love it !

Did the eye shadow colored ones fade over time?
Haven't almost a year later, but I don't think they will.

I get the feeling the official pigments may be a ripoff.
They are.. unless there's a color you can find in eyeshadows and you find that color of pigment online..

Hi! May I know where did you buy alumilite? And how much does it cost?
Thank you☺️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
www.alumilite.com/
Be sure to know what you're buying. Some of the alumilite products are specifically designed for wood and wood turning epoxies. They can be difficult to work with and expensive, but very good for their intended purpose.
Use a heat gun on the bottom of the eye shadow pallet to loosen the glue. Then you can remove the metal pans and decant into useable containers.
Would this also work for UV resin??
Thank you very much
Nice find. Where do you buy your resin?
I've bought all kinds of resins at many prices to understand the differences better. I would recommend starting with cheaper ones to learn with.
would have liked to see you take the resin out of the cups
I have lots of leftover Holi powder, which I believe is a mix of powder pigment and cornstarch. Does anyone know if this would work in resin? Thank you.
I believe it would. The minimal amount of cornstarch shouldn't be enough to affect the resin.
I loved it....thanks for the info
The majority of eye shadows are made of mica powder plus other ingredients.
Thank you!
Use a strainer to rub the powder on it collect the powered
I cant believe you waisted all of that resin! Why not pour it all into molds and have something made from it??
Amazing thanks!!!
Why after I spend $50 on micas this video pops up 😝 good to know I'll def stock up at dollar tree
Loved ur video
Cool
