Depending on what kind of an instrument panel that you have on the dash of your truck, it should have miles per hour & kilometers. If you have a digital speedometer , you can go in your settings and change it from miles per hour to kilometers, you can find that out in your owners manual.

I went from southern Ohio to Toronto with my high school choir to see the Mama Mia Live production in 2001.
As our bus got cleared through the border, a student opened his window, shoved his head and left arm out, faced rearwards and yelled, "We fooled ya, comrades!"
The border patrol had agents in vehicles just sitting there, and they started driving as soon as they saw his arm get out the window.
He was pulled off the bus, even though he had his paperwork and had been cleared through, and the bus driver was told to start driving without this kid.
The kid was held at the border and his parents were called and they had to drive up themselves to get him. He was banned from Canada for 10 years.
Border agents have zero humor. I think they're harvested from Pluto to work the borders and they're pissed that their home got downgraded.
Seriously though, they don't joke. And they will "detain" you in a holding cell indefinitely if they want to. They have too much power. They don't need a reason. They can just keep you in a concrete room for days. Longest I spent in one was 4 hours. The Migrant Rights Network is lobbying hard to get rid of the border agency. All provinces but Ontario have ended their contracts and have said they'll stop putting migrants in federal prisons with actual felons. All except Ontario.

Did everything wrong going through border back into US yesterday. We were pulling a car trailer and driver decided that made us an RV for the crossing-on a Sunday. He chose the commercial truck lane because sign had “RV” on it. We pulled up to two gates, one was closed but the other was open with a green light. We went through that gate and pulled up behind a class C motor coach.
The border guard sits up in a little room about level to a truck drivers window. The RV person was close to that level. We watched the RV pull over to the side and we moved forward for our turn. My friend was driving so he turned the truck off and jumped out to be able to talk to the guard. The guard asks what we are doing in this line and not the other…it said “RV” and my friend said he defaulted to it applying to a car trailer. Guard asked if we read the rest of the sign which stated that applied only to Saturday; oops! “Why didn’t you wait at the gate,” the guard asked. My friend explained how the gate was open and the light was green. Again, didn’t read the fine print…
“Please put your rear window down.” Ok, then. See, just luggage here I’m helpfully thinking.
So guard is clearly trying to figure out how to send us over to the correct, backed up, line but proceeds ahead instead. What is in the trailer, “a 1970 AMX” and I add that there is a porta poti, too (guard either didn’t hear me, didn’t care, or chose to ignore me). There are more questions like, do you have the papers for the car, “they are in it”. He asks if the car is plated and what does it say; “yes, but can’t remember the plate I’d, but I have a picture of it”. Shows photo. “What about the trailer” the guard asks. My friend said he had borrowed it from a friend from Oregon. There was a little confusion over the Vancouvers as to why he would drive all the way down to Oregon to pick up the trailer to get the car in Vancouver….sorted that out-two Vancouvers, one in Washington and the BC one. I declared my prescription pain pills (“yes, in the correct bottle…” and finally the guard said to pull into the green building and out the other side and keep going. I think the only thing we did right was to give the guard our passports right away.

On our 2023 GMC Sierra we were able to to change our dash settings to metric while in Canada and back to standard once we got into Alaska. There was no guessing what speed limit we were going and how many miles/kilometers we had traveled. Takes the guesswork out of it all. It also changes the gallons to liters and etc.

  • @BK-dv1hh

After driving truck back and forth between the US and Canada…quick math to figure MPH or Miles to Kilometers is: divide the kilometers by two (in half), then add 10% of the original number. 100 divided by 2= 50, + 10 = 60 mph or miles !

We've been to Canada several times (Victoria, Vancouver, Burnaby, and Butchart Gardens) and in 2012 we took a cruise up to Seward, road the Alaskan RR through (with various stops) to Fairbanks, then back to Anchorage, then to Wittier to take another cruise back to Vancouver, B.C. where we stayed a few more days before driving back to Western Washington (Grapeview) where we live.
Remember: if you've ever run a "10K" it was 6.2 miles, so calculate accordingly.
We got a late start (it's about 3 hours to the Canadian border) so getting through the border crossing was tedious (long lines), then getting through Vancouver to the northwest of Stanly Park across the bridge, got us lost and snarled into commute traffic so we stopped at an Indian Restaurant in Richmond (south of Vancouver), met someone who gave us directions and has since become a Facebook friend.
Cell service is dicey as you've noticed, but when you actually get to Alaska you should have less difficulty as you are back in the U.S. You didn't mention getting a "milepost" book which for travelers going up via road, I would think, is essential.
Also, if you go to Denali you might not want to take an all-day tour (on a children's school bus unless they finally use something comfortable) but some of the other tours (like a dog mushing camp) were very interesting. We also went to a dinner show that was fun and made a river run (June 4th) that was really cold although we were in full wet suits our stocking feet froze.
Fairbanks was great and we wish we'd stayed a week or more. Talkeetna is where we took a flight over Denali Mountain and that was great, although it was early June and 87 degrees when we walked from our lodge into the town (which is quite funky).
Take several "Marionberry" tours that are available in Anchorage. Go to the aquarium at the tip of the Seward Peninsula and don't miss taking the NP boat tour offered from the Seward Harbor (you also get a nice dinner with the all-day cruise). Then go over to Homer as RV traveling friends said they loved it and went salmon and cod fishing there which stocked up their freezer.
We only spent a month in Alaska and went because of our interest in traveling via the Alaskan RR, but it was not that much more expensive to cruise up and back (than it was to fly) and we needed the "going back" cruise to rest.
You can drive to Skagway (tour busses take people from Skagway to Whitehorse and back or you can take their railroad.) Read the details as you might be able to do this trip in reverse:
    www.alaska.org/detail/white-pass-yukon-route-railroad
You can only get to Juneau and Ketchikan by boat and road from Whitehorse but with an RV that might be difficult. If you can take a side trip go to Sitka by boat (I missed that on the trip we took) so I'd love to see it through your eyes.
This link shows all of the cruise ship ports so you can guess that there will be supplies and interesting things to see and do at each location. I hope this is helpful:
    www.cruisemummy.co.uk/alaska-cruise-ports/
I am enjoying your trip so far and if you do any of the things I suggest, watching your experiences will be a great way to relive those memories and make some new ones. Enjoy.

One year going to an RV rally in northern Ontario on 4th of July with customs folks who did not want to be working that day and we drew the "short straw". Searched the 5th wheel from top to bottom. Found a gun lock that we had gotten free at an RV rally and got third degree explaining that we did not have any weapons in the camper. Customs guys said "If I get my dog will he find anything?". Finally convinced them that we did not have weapons but they were really rude, climbing on our furniture to search cabinets, etc. and ended up sitting there 45 minutes before they cleared us. Other times no problem. Going to Alaska and coming back, going to Nova Scotia and back we breezed right through.

This must be the season for travel to Canada and Alaska! Seems all bloggers are up there this year. I’m loving the conversation regarding inches vs. meters and miles vs kilometers. On your speedometer there is usually a second meter for Kilometers for an easy comparison. Thanks for your blogs !

Welcome to Canada! You will be travelling through one of our ‘prettiest’ Provences. A little tip about crossing boarders. Sunglasses off, use eye contact, let just the driver answer their questions, unless they ask you (or other passengers) a question, and basically just answer what questions they ask, be honest. You should be able to change your vehicle settings to metric from US. I know you have already been in our country for a bit , but drive safe and soak up our clean (Smokey?) air. Have a great journey. One guy on my charter bus admitted at the border he had a gun in his suitcase. That made all luggage from a full bus load of people get pulled off the bus. We missed their link up to the cruise ship we were heading to for them to all get on. When that happens they make other accommodations with another boat to take them all out to the cruise ship. What a mess that is.

Good job at the border. As a regular crosser, abide by the advice NayNay read - keep the answers short and only answer what they ask. Also agreed, only the driver answers questions unless they ask the passenger. BUT... you went through Sumas; you completely missed Vancouver! You guys need to think about spending a few days in Vancouver when you come home. You CAN'T skip the city!!!

You will see some beautiful country and you might luck into seeing some wild animals. I have cross between the 2 countries. I always buy my food when I am in the country I am staying in for a while. Best rule of thumb is no fresh meat or fruit. Have fun and enjoy Canada. Dana and Laurie

We are from Canada and last time we went to the USA on our 1rst shake down trip March 2023, we were the same lol in telling each other that only one person does the talking etc. But....after deciding my husband would do all the talking, the security agent asked about something food related and my husband said no....then like Renee I had to correct him, as he had forgotten we had some prepackaged Costco salad. The agent was really nice and said let you on a tip. The first set of questions is usually aimed at the Husband/driver and then when they ask something about food related they generally are waiting for the wife to answer as they generally have done most of the food packing. I was waiting for them to ask you about the cat and vaccines etc, as we are hoping to eventually take our cat next time we go. Have a great trip to Alaska!

Easiest is to remember that 1 mile is about 1.6 km. So just divide 100 bij 1.6 and you know the speed limit. Most modern cars also have the option to switch between miles and kilometers, something I do when I go to England from Europe.

You drove right by our house in Bothell, Washington! Awesome! I'd recognize that I-5 to Everett and Canada sign anywhere. My apologies for 405 near Seattle - it's always been a hassle, especially in an RV (believe me, I know this pain).
It's only our house for another couple of weeks however, because after 22 years we're selling it and hitting the road in our old, but well kept and modified 2003 Fleetwood Bounder 36D! Yeah, a Class-A owner (a gasser) and his clan have started following your videos! We just found your channel a few weeks ago, and we've enjoyed your travels and RV experiences. Thank you for putting together such a fun channel.
We're bringing two cats and a rabbit along for the ride too. It's going to be a lot different than the "Space Art" I post on my YT channel now, but next week we start posting "the journey"... once I get our Bounder back from the shop. Then it'll be "space art, on the road!"
Thank you for sharing your travels. Dex is awesome too

20 years ago when little lady and I started dating seriously, I took her on a trip to Niagara Falls. Understand, I lived in Ohio and she West Virginia. (We both lived by state border) when we crossed into Canada we got the questions. I had Ohio license and she WV. I got the 5th degree because they thought I kidnapped her. Border agents all around my car and they kept asking her if she was there wilfully and that if she wasn't the situation would be handled. They said different states made them question. As harsh as it was for me, I appreciated they took that step. We did have a great, very expensive time. A memory we talk about to this day. Stay safe, enjoy, looking forward to updates on this travel. Love you guys.

A lot of Canada experiences freezing temperatures. For any crack in the road water will get in. And when it freezes that water will turn to ice and expand, widening that crack. In just a few years a hairline crack will transform into a huge pothole.

I've been to Canada four times. The first two crossing were as a shortcut to Michigan from upstate NY, driving a modified VW Rabbit. The next two trips were travel to PEI from Maine in an ordinary pickup. Canadian Customs were much friendlier when we told them our visit was for tourism rather than a shortcut to another U.S. state. They like to hear that you have reservations at a destination. On the shortcut trips we were driving a fully striped (but street legal) race car with sponsor names, one of which was Heritage Firearms. They were okay when we explained that they'd just sponsored us for the event, which took place in the U.S. and didn't involve any firearms. We've never been RVing in Canada, but someday we want to go to Montreal to see some of the fireworks festival. For the speedometer, flip through the multi-function LCD screens in your GM dash cluster. One of them displays your speed in MPH or Km/H. (This was true for my 2014 Sierra and my current 2022 Silverado.)
