- Here's the scoop on RV boondocking... you need to be prepared. We have only had one battery in 4 years of full-time RV living. No generator, no solar. Tonight, we share some tips on how to find last-minute RV spots on those long driving days!
If you are boondocking, you will find that you have much more flexibility in finding accommodations. In this episode, we find that California can bring RV life some frigid temperatures at night.

Also..every time I fry bacon the smoke alarm goes off. I found that a quart size zip lock fits over the alarm. I put it on, fry bacon, eat breakfast and take the zip lock off. Works better than the ear drum piercing.

No way! Our cat used to run to the bedroom knowing the smoke detector was ALWAYS going to sound…now dh takes the battery out. Goes back in when dishes are done.
When we cook sausage, once per trip, I take the battery out of the smoke detector. It's 4 feet away from the stove top. Why don't they think of these things?
I give Renee a thumbs up for driving the truck and pulling a trailer. My wife won't drive my Tundra, evening without the trailer.

I live in Northern CO. We know crazy weather! Memory Foam products are just terrible for wishy-washy temps! They are awful in the winter for being cold and hard, and then I find them miserably hot the rest of the year.

I'll be getting a kitten in a month or so since my 17 y/o cat passed away in July, just a month before my beloved husband. If things work out as planned, by Christmas I'll be in a Class A with my Vibe in tow.
We are about 4 months from FULL TIME. Thinning out the possessions and getting the house ready to sell. You guys are sooooo great and encouraging. Love ya 3.

99 can be a pain in the butt! I’m originally from Fresno, but was an RN working in Madera. In wintertime, the valley fog is an awful problem! One night I was on call, and I was called in at 2 am for an emergency C section, as the Neonatal specialist . I knew I had my normal 30 minute drive, but it literally took me m just driving, 1 hr 15 minutes! I worried thee whole way! Yet, I beat the OB by 15 minutes, and he actually lived slightly closer by 5 miles. So, we could not start without the OB, but I ended up acting as assistant surgeon, Pediatrician and Neo specialist. I called RT in to assist with the premie. Best call I ever Made! I just didn’t have enough hands to manage it all, and the OB also needed another pair for the patient. Both the OB and I stayed til shift change just to avoid having to get back into that pea soup called Tule Fog‼️🎯🚩
Putting in a couple of Hot water bottles under covers 15-20 minutes before bed would have made a big difference crawling into bed! Cheap/ quick help with the cold. Safe travels 😀

Something we learned in this weeks cold snap in Missouri: wrap your propane tanks in a blanket. When the bottles get cold, the propane apparently turns into thick goo and the furnace doesn’t work. Wrapping the tanks in a blanket has made such a huge difference in how effective the furnace worked.

False. I boondock in Winter in Canad, Never a problem at -30F
@@canadianwarrior2108 I am also a Canadian (specifically raised near Edmonton). I have no idea where you are “Boondocking” at -30 but I sure don’t know anyone who is doing it.
@@helenettlin7152 Several rest areas, numerous locations along the North Saskatchewan River, Big Box Retailers. And on top of that, My previous acreage home was heated with Propane, 4000 litre tank, Coldest day -53C, and the average prarie winter temps. Not once did the furnace fail to run. Simply, It is an urban myth that propane doesnt flow in cold temps. Millions of canadians who heat with propane disprove this myth!
Liquid propane will turn into a gas at any temp above -40.
Got to be careful during those cool nights. If you leave the trailer plugged in, you can drain the truck battery. We had a 20 year old 5th with no solar or generator and one battery. Our furnace didn’t work unless it had 13v which is impossible to have with just the battery. So I used a jumper box to supply additional power for heating. Then start the truck at 3 o’clock in the morning and use an inverter on the truck to supply 120v to kick up the heat and recharge. The truck is quieter than a generator. All this for the wife and kids in 30 degree temperatures.
Now we just purchased a new c class with dual batteries/solar and a generator. It’s nice to get some sleep.
That was a very smart move at the time!

When it comes to putting in miles, never underestimate the usefulness of a power nap.
It's interesting that Peggy Sue's is listed under Harvest Host. It is just a free parking lot that everyone ( mainly truckers) stays at overnight. I have stayed there at least 20 times over the years of traveling between Northern Cal and Phoenix.
Oh interesting, we had no idea about this! It was definitely listed there, now we are going to have to investigate 🤔
Always me... setting off the smoke alarm!!! We bought one that was suggested by another RVer. You can just pop out the battery when it goes off. Love. Another love.. Dex-Man!!

My smoke detector goes off all the time in my cargo trailer. I love watching you two on just the regular days. I’m setting in the desert by Yuma, Arizona all alone in the desert, trying to avoid Covid. My 12 volt fridge died and I had to ship it off. At least it’s under warranty. But for now I’m using soft cooler’s until I get a new one. But thank goodness my solar makes me ice cubes for free to keep them cold. Warm hug’s even to Dexter ❤️

Every time we cook in the frying pan, we remove the battery from the smoke alarm first. It's amazing in a good way, how sensitive they are!!!

Smoke alarm going off means dinner is almost ready. One of us grabs the dish towel and turns on the vent fan while heading to swing the towel at the smoke alarm while opening the door. It's a thing. My DH looked over at me and smiled and nodded while you were fanning the alarm. Love you guys. We are full-time for four years. You are real about what we go through.

From a Dumb Dutchman from Lebanon PA to a couple Skooks (Lol). A Portable Buddy heater works wonders for taking the chill off before bedtime when you're in a situation where your batteries won't get you through the night. Just make sure you have a little air flow just in case it builds any CO.

If you guys don't want to invest in a lot of the typical boondocking options like lithium, solar, and/or a generator.. One thing you might want to look at is a Mr. Buddy propane heater. You can run one on low for about 6 hours on a 1 gallon tank. Nice to have for emergencies and unplanned stops.

We've been in our RV full time for almost 4 months and never set off the smoke alarm! Lol😂 HOWEVER, at our old house the smoke detectors were so sensitive we had to deactivate them whenever we cooked certain meals. 😁

First night out on cross country trip to California beginning of December we stopped to boondock at a Walmart in northern Alabama. Very cold so tried furnace on low and 5 AM propane detector going off because of low battery. When we got up went in to Walmart and got a second battery and that took care of us. Now run with two Lithium ion batteries in our 5th wheel.
Oh wow! Some people say the battery should last but we figured it could die after a while! Thanks for sharing your experience and advice!

Peggie Sue’s is the greatest. Eat there each time I pass by. Calico ghost town is 3 miles to the west. San Bernardino county puts on a great show there and the campground us awesome.

Cool video guys. I can’t wait until we are able to make it back to the west coast. We are a few weeks back from. We drove from Texas to Pennsylvania then to New York. There’s nothing like traveling then stoping to sleep in your own bed. You guys may the journey look so much which it is. We have to try harvest host. You say 30 like thats old. I have socks that are that old ! At 30 we we're having twins ( had a 2.5 y.o. as well) . Decided the slide in pickup camper would NEVER work so we got a tent trailer. I didn't give it much hope; but as it turned out it was GREAT !. 30+ years later, couple of tents and 4 RV's later we still enjoy the RV life (not full timers). You do a great job entertaining us, but honestly Dexter steals the show. BTW... I know this is late but to others... Peggy Sue's is a great place to eat but a little scary part of town to stay the night.

Ok, you left NoCal with a gray tank leak, and one week later we had a gray tank leak. You stayed at Peggy Sues your first night, we stayed at Peggy Sues our first night. We're headed to FL...youre headed to Florida. Only bummer is we are going to quartzsite show first!! Im excited to see what else we have ahead of us for our journey, so stay safe and no more leaks!!! Love Carls Kicks! Hubby and I set the smoke alarm off the very first time we cooked in the RV. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure we ever put the battery back in it.....

I have a question for you. I have a cat that I travel with, his name is shadow and he is totally black. I have had him for 4 yrs. He travels pretty well. My question is, how did you get Dexter and how long have you had him? He seems like a great cat.
Thank you Terry! Shadow sounds like an awesome cat 😻 we had Dexter for approximately one year before we hit the road, it still takes him a couple days to get used to driving days after taking a hiatus. We wish you the best, you guys sound like you’re gonna be living it up together!!

Yessss!!! Thank you for sharing the fact to look at a satellite map prior to arrival! Speaking from co-pilot to co-pilot, that’s exactly what I do when my hubby is driving and we’re ending at a place “foreign” to us. I won’t say who, but we have watched other YT channels and at least two of them got stuck and put their rig in a bad position. When I look at satellite images, since we tow a large fifth wheel, I’ll look for semi trucks with trailers as well as other Rvs and the direction of travel to help us get in and out safely. Thanks again for sharing!

Central PA camping we have been at a steady 3 degrees at night along the Susquhanna our RV propane fridge quit on us already got it working by covering some vents so we have a fridge again winter camping is a whole different expierence thats for sure!
