    It was a great era of tennis... just before the 15 year reign of the big 3. Hewitt was at the top of his game, saffin was amazing, and Roddick was still a contender. Great times

    This tournament was, effectively, the last time we would the 03-04 version of Roddick that was created by Brad Gilbert. Big serving and powerful, flat groundstrokes from the baseline. Just two months later, when he played Hewitt at Indian Wells, he looked like a totally different player, especially with his FH.

    Wow, these two really played high quality tennis here. Definitely one of the epic matches of that era. 2005 had really cool showdowns as a whole, to that match we can add :
    -federer vs safin, same tournament
    -federer nadal in miami
    -Nadal Coria in Rome
    -Agassi Blake at the US Open
    -Federer Nalbandian at the TMC

    Roddick's serving to close out the first set ... my goodness. Saves 5 break points with 4 aces and then two aces to seal it.
    The first three sets was Roddick at his best, and he only won one. Hewitt was playing at the top of his game also.

    Roddick ABSOLUTELY should have won this match. Up huge in the 3rd set. Blew it. Up in that tie break, blew that too. Could have easily won the 2nd set too. Mentally crumbled in the 4th.

    If it wasn't for this video I honestly wouldn't even know Roddick could hit his FH flat. Firing Brad Gilbert and then changing his coach and game style was the biggest mistake he made in his career.

    • @pomerlain8924
      @pomerlain8924 2 года назад +6

      Yep. That's what a lot of people forget. The Roddick that we saw at this tournament, and under Brad Gilbert, with a his flat FH to compliment his big serving, would have been a threat at majors for years to come. He was so obsessed with trying to find consistency that he ruined his biggest weapon.

    • @jasonnolasco2826
      @jasonnolasco2826 7 месяцев назад

      I think people forgot that the courts got slower as time went which ruined power tennis so it was never a guarantee that this kind of Roddick wouldve won a lot.

    Hewitt's speed was his only real weapon. Got him two slams and a number 1 ranking.

    • @captainbryce1
      @captainbryce1 3 года назад +16

      Surprisingly, for a guy who was rather underpowered compared to most of his contemporaries, Hewitt could also use his serve as a weapon. He didn't have the 130-140 bombs that the great serves have. But he was a "spot server" and could frequently hit aces in the corners and on the outside of the line. Relative to other players of his size and style, Hewitt was actually one of the better servers despite his unusual motion and tendency to foot fault.

    • @keithwatson7434
      @keithwatson7434 Год назад

      He also had great footwork, pretty decent volley, very good lob shot. Had Federer not been so dominant (04-07) Hewitt, Safin and Roddick would have won more GS

    • @keithwatson7434
      @keithwatson7434 Год назад

      @@John-lr4hp Ace% is the most useless stat to judge a player's serving ability. Federer is barely in the top 100 in that category, but would you say Federer is barely a top 100 server ever? For players like Djokovic and Federer, who put A LOT of first serves in, the ace% is going to be low, but that actually shows how good their serves are.
