Roxy Music - Psalm (1974)

- Roxy Music were an English rock band formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry, who became the band's lead vocalist and chief songwriter, and bassist Graham Simpson. Alongside Ferry, the other longtime members were Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion), and other former members include Brian Eno (synthesizer and "treatments"), Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin), and John Gustafson (bass). Although the band took a break from group activities in 1976 and again in 1983, they reunited for a concert tour in 2001, and toured together intermittently between that time and their break-up in 2011. Ferry frequently enlisted members of Roxy Music as session musicians for his solo releases.

My best friend Brendan died this morning and like me he was a big Roxy fan; I'd like to think this song is accompanying him on his way; God love you my mate
It does mate. This song is as close to the divine as you will find on this earth. You and your dear friend are lucky to have shared such beauty together xx
@@scorchedearth8786 Thank you
Your friend had good taste in music. He is safe with God now, waiting for the Last Day. All the best, my friend.
🙏
Enjoy peeps, you're watching the masters at work here, there will NEVER be another Roxy!
Yes never Roxy music 🎶 🎼 come back 🔙 💘

you might NOT believe in Christ but YOU WILL BELIEVE in this song
Really enjoy this song. And RM. But there is something offered that is far better.
BEHOLD, He is coming with the clouds, and EVERY eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and ALL the tribes (nations) of the earth will mourn over Him [realizing their sin and guilt, and anticipating the coming wrath]. So it is to be. Amen. (Rev 1:7)
Very true
And here's Roxy Music incorporating Dixieland and gospel into their musical palette. And some people still insist that the departure of Brian Eno marked the end of Roxy music as an adventurous art rock collective...
It's amazing, isn't it? I like their entire body of work; but as they are just great musicians, Roxy needed no gimmicks nearer the end of their career. They're just excellent artists.
They better than Eno. I realized this only at the age of 40 😭😭😭
I've seen them in the Vienna 🏟 Konzert Haus 🏡 I in 72 with ♌ leo sawyer as Guest 🌟 they are great sensational in Glam rock eno like a drag queen Brian the gentlemen Phil Manzanera Andy Mc Kay and Paul Thompson as drummer 🥁 their ▶ was pretty good
It's extraordinary music and I might be biased but I have to say Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music haven't truly been appreciated over the years. That said, it doesn't stop me enjoying them over and over. I really hope there's one more tour!
Viewers ,you do realise we will never see anyone as good as this man ever again ..... don't you . Sounds a bit sad that doesn't it , but we where around see see and hear and enjoy
his life and work , genius absolute genius ...
That wicked vibrato in the vocals,no one can match Brian Ferry as a the crooner quintessential🥃
This was my mother’s last song. I don’t think she really believed. But this gave her peace, believe and comfort. Thx Roxy, great work
Forevermore..
How amazing your mother must have been. Great taste. May she rest in peace.
Greetings to your mother, she had a nice taste. All of us love her. saludos amigo
I believe your Mother saw the humour and irony in the song. I would have loved to have met her. x
I so hear you
I laughed so hard when he caught the tambourine!!! This is perfect footage of a RM era that's not documented enough!!!!
Haha the thrower was very patient
Me too. Great catch. Also adore the way he fetched the mouth organ. Suave and comical and completely awesome. I don't say that lightly.
I'm totally not religious but if there is any sort of heaven... I doubt I'd be let in .. but this type of stuff would have to be the soundtrack. Or I want my money back.
Me too 😂. It could have ended badly if it had hit the mike stand, good throw, good catch. This song may well have been performed live in concert when I saw Roxy in 1974 and 1975; sadly no flying tambourine.
He’s got a fantastic sense of humour that sometimes gets lost amongst all the ‘suave and cool’. He doesn’t take himself anywhere near as seriously as people think 😅
He comes across as an impeccably considerate and humble man in the interviews I’ve seen. One of the good guys, but profoundly interesting nonetheless.
Strong contender for my funeral song choice..
Mine too. Among others. This would be the finale’ song.
Can I come?
@@jennymitchell8448
Sure! But only if you sing along..
@@Oske.images Deal!
Somehow I missed out on Roxy until my 60's. My, my, what a special music group. This one hit me out of left field, as "Mother Of Pearl" did last year. And thank goodness they've some really nice video footage of Roxy.
Short of perfection....I tried to be good! Yes, the man is honest. Perfect
This is phenomenal.
& I'm an atheist.
What a live rendition/performance this is.
So good it's ridiculous.
I don't believe in atheism.
No kidding. It’s an amazing performance. Unmatchable.
Saw Brian Ferry in Toronto around 1985 ?
He was Awesome
This is gorgeous. Happy Palm Sunday 2022
Try on your love
Like a new dress
The fit and the cut
Your friends to impress
Try on your smile,
Square on your face
Showing affection
Should be no disgrace
Try out your God
Hope He will send
Kindness from strangers
On whom you depend
Try on His coat
A mantle most fine
Myriad colors
His harmony-thine
Believe in me
Once seemed a good line
Now belief in Jesus
Is faith more sublime
Head in the clouds
But I can't see the Lord
Short of perfection
I'll try to be good
I'll stand at His gate
I'll wait for His sign
Then I'll walk in His garden
When it's my time
Drink from His cup
Hush now don't you cry
His quiet waters
Will never, never run dry
Nearing death's vale
He's here by my side
He leads me to paradise
A mountain so high
Don't be afraid
Just treasure His word
Singing His praises
I know that I'll be heard
He's gonna take you by the hand
He's gonna make you feel so good
Open up your eyes
And then you'll see all that you should
Forget all your troubles
You will feel no pain
He's all that you need
He's your everything
When I'm feeling all at sea
Deliverance is that distant shore
I will not be worried
Someday His house will be my home
For ever more
TNX! IMHO
Those are really beautiful lyrics, and I'm not even religious. Are they original lyrics?
@@jeffryhammel3035 Yes Bryan Ferry wrote it :)
@@boxiko2 A really underrated writer, Ferry that is. Thanks for answering my question.
They are the lyrics of hope!…built on faith and delivered with love.
It’s 50 years ago since I bought this album, and still love it to death🙏
Pure bliss. The perfect performance of this wonderful Roxy Music song.
Try to imagine to see and watch the live performance of THIS very long song unprepared in a lousy TV show for teens like MUSIKLADEN with "stars" like ABBA or DOLLY DOTS normally. Young people got the chance to get an idea what pop music could be. ART. Bryan Ferry is unique.
Awh, thanks for that! It's just coincidental, but as a guy in his 60's, I was thinking the same way - what a different treat this would be for the young adults back then!
I like ABBA...
1977 "Psalm" was played at our wedding while ushering in guest. Played again 2012 35th vow renewal. We love Roxy Music & ♡ this song.
50 year Chicago celebration was Superb!
This song is so fantastic, only Roxy music can sing it with such emotions. I Love Roxy music 💜.
Sensational
Good things are timeless
One of my favorite bands of all time and I am always listening. Unique music.
Never get tired of this. God Bless Andy Mackay. Roxy`s main man! Only jokin`, Paul Thompson Drums. Graham Simpson on bass, Phil Manzanera looking after guitar. The chemistry on this stage is clear to see. Bryan Ferry up front making it all happen. What a band.
Manzanera, thinking to himself at 7:24: "Yep, this is going bloody well indeed."
Pretty sure the bass player here is Johnny Gustafson
I’m going on a Roxy binge after seeing them in Chicago a week ago. I never heard of this song. It’s not mocking. Lyrics are beautiful and sincere, and I’m nonreligious. It’s not like Jagger doing the Country or gospel songs with an over-exaggerated Southern twang w/ an irreverent wink. Oh, and Jagger *is* a Christian. I love gospel music. I had no idea Roxy did a gospel number. Jeez, was there a more eclectic band in their short run?
Roxy's golden period with Eddie Jobson on keys & violin.
I think that’s Brian eno playing keys here.
@@davidhaynes3126 No, that's Eddie Jobson on keys. "Psalm" is from their third album, "Stranded". Brian Eno left after their second album.
@@slw59 thanks. I appreciate.
It’s a cool performance.
@@davidhaynes3126 Yes! Very hypnotic.
I forgot how good this song is. This version in particular.
Yes, me too. In fact, I think I used to skip it when I played the LP. What was I thinking of, it's fucking sublime!
Excellent performance, and Bryan Ferry's vocals, woaaa
Bryan was my first crush when I was way too young to even know what a crush was.
Showing my age, here. I'm talking about way way back. (I'm a 1971 girl, my Dad huge RM fan).
I was always fascinated by them but a wee bit scared and freaked out.
Every single year for several decades, I love them more.
Life is as weird as they were. But they are better. Ha!
It's amazing for a live version. One of my favourites from the album, only just found this version.
This is sublime.
Superb performance of a Classic RM track ...thanks for loading!
One of the most awsome Glam Rock bands! Love Roxy Music
Rock bands in general.
Just cut out the first two worlds you wrote and you got it all perfectly right! 😁
One of the greatest bands that ever existed -- geniuses.
Roxy Music.Hit aus meiner Jugendzeit. Einfach Spitze
Haven’t watched this amazing track for a while, but true artists at fun.
Saw Brian Ferry at Massey Hall in the late eighties.
He did not disappoint me in any way.
Of all the acts, he is still the Cooolest Funkadelic Dude I’ve ever seen.
Saw Brian Ferry in Toronto. After he had left Roxy Music. Around 1985. Spent the money, got great seats at old Massey Hall.
Best gig I’ve ever seen
I can't get enough Bryan Ferry, he's the best. Thanks for this amazing footage!
Believe in roxy music
Amen
This is such a great version, thanks for sharing!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I really would like to find other recorded videos of RM playing the Psalm. Only found this version from Music Laden.
A jewel what you have there, Musikladen!
Brilliant!
I’ve been listening to this track quite a bit. Excellent work.
This tune made the hair on my knock stand up. Takes me back. Thanks

Roxy Music was unique and magical. Love all the Records especially those without Eno. The first 2 Records were great too but I like the later ones more. Stranded is one of my favs.
One more show of how versatile Roxy was, great stuff.
The great roxy music
6:10 Hey there, well caught Mr Tambourine Man
Genius
What a great band in all eras. Roxy Music and they where awesome live too.
Here looking a bit shy and very badly underfed, Eddie Jobson was still a mere lad of only nineteen summers.
Ferry's homage to his youthful take on life and everything, to his dad, and 2HB. All of his meaning is hidden in plain sight. Some of his women but few of his fans ever got it. I bet all of his bandmates did, or he'd never have been bandmates with them.
Tambos for joy!!
I saw them in 80th a few time... Great 👌
Just unbelievably amazing, this just blows my mind every time I watch it, it makes me feel that I should be religious :)
Wonderful song❤️
Love. Just love. EVERYONE. ❤

Better Theology than some sermons I've heard.....genius....but what do you expect from Roxy Music.☮✝
The first original Praise Songs!! Thanks Wayne !!
prachtig lied van roxy Brian is de beste
This is too cool. I'm a fly !
Just starting. Damn loss for words.
Another year gone and it just gets better; Mr Ferry you're a god!
Virginia plain 50 yrs old and it’s still better than anything else
Agree
Just the best. Great live version, great alto sax, and Bryan is mesmerizing: pure ironic, comic, iconic charisma.
sopran sax?
What happens at 4:18 is just beautiful
True. Not listened to the album version for a while, seem to recall that part is accompanied by synthesizer crescendo.
@@SaxJockey On the album version a Welsh male choir is entering just there!
@@staernpeder Just found the studio version on here. The synth sound I was thinking of, seems to be a treated harmonica, but yes, the choir also comes in there.
Actually performing musical magic.
A wonderful live version ode to the master which is Christ. Amazing lyrics and wish this song could continue for his return. What an achievement, the whole band grooves to this reverential and most fitting tribute to the man who saved the day for all that is good.😢
I think of these verses hearing this song...Philippians 2 vs 10... "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11. and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord."
So so cool! I cant stop listening! It just fits together!
This is one of the greatest Christian songs ever written and I don't care if Ferry meant it to be or not and I don't care who disagrees with me. This song has moved me in a spiritual way every time I've ever heard it since 1975 and even my 83 yr old devote Christian mom thinks it's a beautiful song
The Holy Spirit speaks to believers in all kinds of ways...and the name of Jesus was lifted up in this song...and John 12:32 says - "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me."
So A blessing from God is a True Blessing!👍✝
Roxy music! For ever moooore!!!! Who knows, maybe I walk there one day, Listening to their music over there! Hand in hand! A pity I don't believe....
You don’t have to. Just love the music. Feel that and you’re divine.
if you don t believe in something beyond here....you don t get the song..go away
@@maryli2049 My dearest Mary LI, feel free to believe (in) whatever you want. Allow me to do the opposite! I think the lyrics are ment in a satirical way, although I can understand why fooks want to believe he is sincere here. But why then is he asking himself, while head in the clouds: where is the Lord? And in the end, finishing this "divine" song, he spits out the words "for ever more", with a synical smile. But correct me if I'm wrong. I will go away, if that pleases you. In the end, we all go .... away ....
Brian Ferry's outfit and look here matches the topic of this song so well.
Powerful!
... try out your God - hope he will send kindness from strangers ...
Exceptionnel !!!!!
I've loved Brian and his music for years. I can only hope he has a real relationship with God. He's an amazing talent that I hope to see in heaven.
anyone else end up here after searching "what does it look like when a tambourine is caught by someone on quaaludes"
Style ,suave in all locales well accomplished
Eddie Jobson, incredible.
Belive in Jesus ❤
super
Yeeees!!!😊😊
Short of perfection... I strongly disagree. Bloody Mary!
I love that he has Vaseline on his cheekbones as well. Pure joy.
All stuff I can believe in.
Dat is zweet
No pain
Elmer Gantry with a talent for singing. Awesome spectacle.
Wow! The gear must have been good back in the day! Utterly brilliant nevertheless.
Agree
How did they do this? Perfection
Another Roxy music classic, I read that this song was a satire and Bryan Ferry was an atheist at the time of writing.
Not true
My opinion is a New Orleans dirge. Getting that send off to the Dark Side of the Moon where the band changes it tune.
Not everybody believes in God like I do. Never mind. Focus on the good vibes.
Tindersticks madea career out of this ;)
LOL. I think you're on to something.
👁 El ojo
Some would like to think this was full of double meanings. The 'Stranded" version with a choir and brought with total conviction which could bring a tear to one's eyes made me think Ferry was actually a Christian sympathiser. What was this "His" and "He" about though ? God is a "he" ofcourse ; only a bloke with huge balls could cobble a planet together in just six 24 hour working days.
'Stranded" remains utterly brilliant ofcourse.
zulke muzikanten zie je niet meer tegenwoordig
What is that woodwind instrument? A clarinet? I can't tell.
Soprano sax.
I think it's cool that you asked that.
Did he not totally destroy? I could see top jazz players wondering "Wow, should I approach this guy?" about a collaboration. I don't know his bio, so maybe it happened for all I know. Wouldn't doubt it.
Pretty good song. Would have sounded better if the band (particularly the keyboard player and the soprano sax) had stuck to the initial bare bones background, leaving Ferry to provide the show and the crescendo, but I understand it would get boring after 5 minutes of the same.
I always felt this to be a parody of god-bothering tunes.
Love this song. Is he being irreverent about the Lord? Mocking even? I hope not, but Bryan understands the ideas very well at least
i think hes serious. you dont write a song that good with that much heart unless you realy love gospel music. whether or not he beleives in God is irrelevant, the song is real
Brian Ferry and Eno loved gospel music and are both very spiritual human beings….but me….. I mock your lord everyday.
