So glad I found your video! It gave me the confidence I needed to tackle this project. Ladies, don’t be scared off. I did it, so can you! 😄 Both doors have needed to be repaired for almost 2 years. We were not about to pay a repair shop to fix them so we were just going to live with it, now we don’t have to. So glad they are both working smoothly again. A big Thank You!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Dealer wanted $750 to repair and said the hinge had to be replaced. BS. $30 part and 1 1/2 hrs of time (kept referring back to the video to make sure I got it right) and good as new. Also broke the rear trim piece on the back clip but went back on secure.
Great video. Saved me the $500 the dealer wanted (just the $100 part cost). One quick note - there is a 10yr service bulletin on this so if you have a van less than 10 years old the dealer should be free
Very thorough video. I thought I would save $1000 from the mechanic's quote and replace the sliding door cable myself. After watching a few different videos out there, this is the most simple yet comprehensive video, by far. I watched your video step by step, and I'm glad to say, I finished it in about 1.5 hours. It was much smoother than I anticipated. You covered everything I needed to go from beginning to end, you didn't miss anything. Other videos had so many extra unnecessary steps, almost intimidating. Great job. Everyone should follow your instruction. Can easily save them $1000-2000
I'm waiting for the tools and part and will tackle this in a couple of days. I'm not a manual guy, but with your help, I feel like this is possible. Thanks in advance buddy!
Mr. Cooper!!! I just fixed my car!! You are totally right about paying $27 dollar for the part, so I bought both parts. Once again, thank you very much!!! God bless you and your family!!!
Wow. Just did this myself and used this video as reference. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch and it still went pretty well. Opened it a half dozen times so far and seems to be working perfectly! Thanks for this video!
Thanks for posting this video. Saved me hundreds of dollars! $28 for the part and I think it was 10 screws. Mine were Phillips and 10mm. Veh is a 2011 Sienna LE. Pulls assembly was torn up. You’re right about that plastic piece covering the bracket at the rear window. Have to slide it forward off if a square bolt. The square bolt is situated to the rear of the cover, so don’t try to pry it or it will break.
Great video, thanks for the help. I just wanted to add this encase others have the same issue. Once all reassembled my door wouldn't work. When pressed the button or pulled the handle the car would emit a long beep and not move the door. I ended up 'forcing' the door all the way closed, including forcing the back of the door into the body of the van. That fixed my problem.
My second door cable just snapped, so i'm using this video for the second time. You sure saved me a lot of money! Thanks for that and have a great day!
Thanks for the videos, I just ordered my parts and plan to fix the doors on my 2014 as soon as they come in. Had the driver side snap back in February and have just been opening it manually, but the passenger side snapped last night and is now stuck in the closed position to boot. If I'd known it was this easy I would have fixed the other side back when it broke!
Great video thank you. I have a 2017 SE, my cables are good but I am trying to figure out the metal rattling noise coming from my sliding door and your video will help me to take things apart.
The 2 bolts that attach to the upper rear door slider rail brace are M6 X 1.0 X 25, part #90080-10252. Using a screwdriver to loosen and tighten these 2 bolts may be the best way to do so.
Hey Mr. Cooper Thanks for the video as so many has stated already. I guess this is a common problem with the doors as it seems everybody is having trouble with(shame onToyota for having this issue and trying to overcharge people to fix it). However with your guidance and a little time and a few other videos (because my door wouldn't open automatically or manually) I got creative got the door open and was able to place the order through the company you suggested. Under $40 bucks with shipping just waiting for the arrival and I'll let you know how it went. For now I just want to say thank you for the video very informative and a hell of a lot cheaper. God bless you man.
Hey I have a question if you can help me out. Does that white plastic piece thats on the pulley wheel prohibit the door from closing if not removed? I just replaced it on my van and the door opens automatically by will not shut. It seems to be stuck in the open position. If you can get back to me I would really appreciate it
Hi, I'm about to change the assembly but I understand that the bracket under the rear window is hard to come off without breaking (at 5m21s). I'm wondering if someone could elaborate a bit on how not to break that black plastic braket, and what is it's part number (in case I break it). Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for this video. I own both a 2006 (2nd gen) and a 2011 (3rd gen) Sienna and when I bought the 2006 last year to leave at our summer home four provinces away the slider cables were broken on both sides of the van and one of the latch motors was shot too. I replaced only the cables for about $40 each side since on the older Sienna the full assembly is about $150-$180 each side from eBay here in Canada. I did some checking and with the newer design it looks like the full assembly on the 3rd gen Sienna is much more reasonably priced so I won't bother trying to do a cable-only fix like on the 2006. As for the dead latch motor on the older van, I did the $5 fix found here on RUclips, but exchange rate and markup being what it is here in Canada it cost me about $16 CDN for the part. Luckily my latch motors are fine on the 2011. On the 2006 I spent about $160 CDN to do cables on both doors and the latch motor on the one door, which was an incredible bargain considering having the dealer do it all would have cost $4-5000. From your video the repair looks very similar to what it did on the 2006 doors, but the motor attachment part seems to have been redesigned for much simpler installation. I'll order the parts as soon as I figure out the best price to Canada, and get this done ASAP since I often have my disabled 85yo father-in-law on that side in the back and he really needs the power door. UPDATE: When I went to the dealer to order the parts they told me my 2011 qualified for an extended recall and they did the whole thing for me at no cost. Apparently the other side had already been done before I bought it.
Sounds like it should be easy for you Martin since you already had some experience with the 2nd generation replacement. Good luck, I hope it goes well!
@@coopersteele Thanks. I forgot to mention that your video was one of only two I found via Google which shows how to do this on a third-generation Sienna. There are hundreds of tutorials for the 2nd gen fix, but I guess not enough people have had these cables snap on their 3rd generation vans yet. We both have 2011's so I guess we are the vanguard. LOL I've done a repair tutorial on another topic for another vehicle, so maybe I'll document my fix this time too. The assembly is available from the dealer locally for about $65 CDN which is about what I can get if for online and then I'd have to pay shipping, so I expect to just drop by the dealer tomorrow and pick one up so I can get started on the repair before the weekend.
@@PhoenixRevealed Do you mind pasting a link for a 2nd generation passenger side door cable replacement into the comments? I've actually be looking for one and haven't found it. I have a 2009, so I'm assuming that makes it 2nd generation. Would love to know the part number as well.
@@brianlodwig752 - I checked my eBay purchase history and calling up my 2019 orders results in a not found page now, but you can still get them from other vendors for the same price I paid back then. You can get just the cable for about $25 CDN, the cable and guide tubes for under $40 CDN, and a complete kit except the mounting plate and pulleys for a bit over $55 CDN. If you need everything including the pulleys and mounting plate it's going to run you around $275 for a rebuilt or $435 for new OEM, but most people just need the cable and tubes, or the cable, tubes, and cover. I don't recommend changing the cable without doing the tubes too. If you order any of these make sure they are for the correct side of the vehicle. They won't work on the side they weren't made for. www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=2004-2010+sienna+door+cable&_sacat=0
Good to know I can do it without taking the door off. Last time i changed that cable i was taking the door off and away from the car. For some reason new cable didn't last long. About a year and it only opens now. But doesn't want to close automatically. Have to close manually. Seems like motor starts to pull but door doesnt move at all like its locked in fully open position. Not sure if thats the cable pulley problem or something else. Maybe the bottom lock doesn't unlock. If you had problem like that please give me a clue. Thanks
Good job on video. Mine just broke on Sunday, so I am preparing to get the parts & tools I need to complete the repairs. I shall see if part of the cable retracted inside the mechanism or not. Thanks for taking the time on this. I wonder if this is something that I should expect to do to the other side in the near future. I will check the other side for any signs of wear to see if I can do any preventative measures.
The slack that you can pull from both the black and silver cable, will it tighten up once you open/close the door? I have the same problem and ordered a replacement part but when I received it, the black/silver cables were not attached to the wheel. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to roll any slack into the wheel before installing...Thanks
Well done. I am planning to buy 2011 sienna, any problem in the transmission or engine, inam thinking to replace the transmission filter and oil . Please advise. Agha Bilal from Phoenix AZN
Cooper, how did you cut the cable exactly so that the door would open??? My cable snapped, and the door won't open manually. We've ordered the cable assembly per the website you recommended, and are just waiting for that to repair. Appreciate the video, it makes this so much less daunting of a task to fix!
I cut it with regular wire cutters. Turn off the power door function, then if you can open the door a little, you might be able to grab the cable with some needle nose pliers and pull it out enough to cut it. Good luck!
hi. mine won't open too (only a few inches open actually) and I found out that was because of the latch on the gas lid. just open the gas lid and push the button on the left side of the gas cap, it should release the latch and allow the door to open all the way
TIP/NOTE - seems obvious now, but when you're putting it all back together, before you pull the unlocked door handle (that previously wouldn't open with power) to put the side panel back on, HIT THE POWER DOOR BUTTON OFF! Unfortunately for me, I was watching this video using using car stereo... and in the last 5 seconds of the repair... it snapped my speaker wire and the power window button... with the window still down 👌
Great video - I hit some pretty big speed bumps though - the bolt that holds the wires on the rear hinge severed and I had to improvise. Worked through that and had everything installed - appeared to be correctly. But when I tested the door ( without doing it manually), the new part completely destroyed itself. The plastic at the bottom broke to pieces and now I have to buy a new part. No idea what I did wrong.
Please tell me, my door opens automatically, but doesn’t want to close. It’s as if something is holding it and doesn’t allow it to close automatically, so you have to close it manually. What could be the problem? Has anyone encountered such a problem?
Does anyone know why I can't seem to find the part for this repair anywhere? I have a 2011 Sienna LE and I need the driver side part but my endless searches come up empty
I am in the US. I need the driver side part but nothing is available for the 2011 sienna. Every link I click the part is listed as discontinued and or not available. What’s curious is that the parts for 2010 and older is readily available.
So, I have been told that even after replacing this part to fix the sliding door that the motor will lock up shortly thereafter and you still have to go and replace the actual motor that controls the sliding door... Has anyone else had this issue? And how much did that cost you to fix?
I recently traded in this van, but they doors ran well for another four years after I did the cable replacement and there were no issues with the door motor.
great video . do you have a link of the tools that you used ? also by me wille my door is broken it shows that the door is open and even with the lights off it drains the batterie anyone here have the same experience ?
Sorry, I don't know where I got the tools. If you do an internet search for "auto trim removal tools" you should come up with something suitable. Sorry I don't have any experience with the electrical problem you are facing. Good luck!
Does anyone know... can I just cut the cable and use it as a manual door? When I turn off the power to the door, and try to do it manually, it's really hard to open and close.
The "extended warranty" on this expired last year and after several discussions with Toyota reps, they will NOT extend that coverage or assist in any way now. Looks like we're on our own!
Thanks for the video. Cable seems to be fine for my 2011 sienna, but still does not open. Every time I try to open drive side door it tries to open it and then close it and same thing when tries to close it, it just makes a sound and doesn’t do anything. Would you know the reason by any chance?
I don't own this model van anymore, but if I remember, that button is to the lower left of the steering wheel. That will put the doors on manual operation. You may need to cut the cable though if it is interfering with manual operation because the electric motor is broken. Good luck!
I would guess its similar, but I'm not 100% sure. 2011 is when the model changed, so there are going to be some differences and probably a different part. IIRC there are a number of videos on RUclips detailing the process for the pre-2011 model year Siennas. Good luck!
That's a good questions and I don't really know or remember. I feel like either it didn't turn if it stayed on or it wasn't on the one I took out so I figured it shouldn't be on there. Did it work if you left it on?
If you compare the part to what was taken off of the vehicle there was no white piece. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have stayed on but the reel with the cables of the old one popped out as I took it off so it is there to keep the spool on but don’t know if it is supposed to come off.
Hey Aaron, the detailed info on the parts is in the description of my first video for these doors. Click on my profile and you should find. Good luck with your door!

Thanks for your post. Passenger side sliding door in my 2011 sienna stops at times in the middle and comes back. Other times, it will open and close properly and in some cases, it just beeps twice and no movement. The movement is so erratic. What could be the possible cause? I removed the cover and looked around but couldn't see anything suspicious. Toyota dealership did the sliding door recall 2 year ago but I need to pay $100 - $150 to diagnose this issue now. Any suggestions. Thank you all

I called Toyota 3-4 months ago and explained the issue to them. Nothing happened but 2 weeks ago, I got a letter from Toyota stating they would cover the cost. I took an appointment with the dealership and it started working there. (Since I noticed the issue I had turned off the power of sliding door). Don’t know how to started working now!! Hoping that it stays that way.

Good luck!
Any advice on how to open the door it is jam shut?
Does anyone know... can I just cut the cable and use it as a manual door? When I turn off the power to the door, and try to do it manually, it's really hard to open and close.
That might work, but after you cut the cable if you accidentally use it in power mode again, it could damage the door. Just be cautious.
Hello, can you help me. I want or know the length of the red wire and the blue wire. Thank you
Forgot to unplug power window switch and broke the switch. What can I do
Hello , where can I order the cable for my 2011 seinna ?
FYI - I believe this part is subject to a recall - you may be able to get reimbursed for the work.
Same problem here. Did you pinpoint the issue? What's was wrong with it?
thanks !! so much
Question...if I can't get to replace the cable can the door be manually opened and closed? If so how can I make it manual?
I don't own this model van anymore, but if I remember, that button is to the lower left of the steering wheel. That will put the doors on manual operation. You may need to cut the cable though if it is interfering with manual operation because the electric motor is broken. Good luck!
Thank you.
Is this a similiar repair for the 2010 Sienna? Some vids show removing the window
I would guess its similar, but I'm not 100% sure. 2011 is when the model changed, so there are going to be some differences and probably a different part. IIRC there are a number of videos on RUclips detailing the process for the pre-2011 model year Siennas. Good luck!
@@coopersteele Perhaps the design team at least eliminated the window removal for that model year.
Hi, do you have the part number for the cable? Great video!
Thanks Tim. Check out the description on my other Sienna door video for the part numbers.
Where do you find the part?
Hi Sean, I have another video on the same subject and l describe how to find the part there.
How did you know to remove the white pulley bracket holder you mention at 8:18? It seems to fit on the van with that white plastic piece on.
That's a good questions and I don't really know or remember. I feel like either it didn't turn if it stayed on or it wasn't on the one I took out so I figured it shouldn't be on there. Did it work if you left it on?
@@coopersteele i saw another video where the guy left it on and it worked
If you compare the part to what was taken off of the vehicle there was no white piece. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have stayed on but the reel with the cables of the old one popped out as I took it off so it is there to keep the spool on but don’t know if it is supposed to come off.
@@slukster1 I just did mine and kept it on there. Works fine
Could you send me a link for the cable assembly?

Thanks for your post.
Passenger side sliding door in my 2011 sienna stops at times in the middle and comes back. Other times, it will open and close properly and in some cases, it just beeps twice and no movement. The movement is so erratic. What could be the possible cause? I removed the cover and looked around but couldn't see anything suspicious. Toyota dealership did the sliding door recall 2 year ago but I need to pay $100 - $150 to diagnose this issue now. Any suggestions. Thank you all
it happens to me the freaking cable is broken now I dont know if I should be bring to the dealer when I purchase the car I also purchase the gold protection plan and I believe it is cover..so I ll let you know the outcome..if it is not cover I guess I have to do it myself..pain in the buck ..Toyota sienna 2017 really sucks
Can you give me the part number? I’ve looked in comments and can’t find it.
Hi Vickie, check out my other video titled "Fix Broken Door Cable on 2011 (and up) Sienna" the part numbers are on that one.
