The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 Is A Segment Leading Midsize Premium Truck

  • With the midsize truck segment once again heating up, #GMC wants to make a big splash with the all-new 3rd generation #GMCCanyon for 2023. Just like the Colorado twin, the redesigned #CanyonAT4X and #CanyonDenali represent the top of the hierarchy, while the #AT4X is the first time we are seeing luxury and off-road capable come together in the smaller #Canyon. All versions of this truck also come standard with the high output 2.7L turbo engine making 310 HP and a best-in-class 430 lb-ft of torque.

Something that all these commentators fail to do is talk about CURB WEIGHT which can lead to misinformation. The Curb Weights of the 2023 are much heavier throughout the Trimm lineup the Elevation is 4300 lbs which will make this trim the most peppy and also give it a much higher payload. The Denali for instance weighs 4800LBS and the AT4 tips the scale at 4500. It is really absolute incompetence at this point with these supposed gurus of RUclips. This idiot raves about the older V6 being faster which is simply bogus. That prior v6 would be an pure slug with these heavier curb weights

The price jump on the Canyon removed it right off my shopping list. I had a 2019 GMC Canyon V6 4x4 in an Extended Cab with the convenience and tow packages, as well as the spray-in bedliner. The sticker was $34,500. The 2023s are now starting at about $43K now and you only get a 5' bed and no option for an extended cab. The reliability of my 2019 was a nightmare. The AC had to be replaced three times in less than three years, and the transmission and transfer case also needed warranty repairs are well in that time. GM was a nightmare to deal with, in summer 2019, the truck was 3 months old and the AC failed the first time. It then took GM 53 days to replace the AC, and only after my state's AG got involved. GM Corporate representative was unapologetic and was actually downright rude about the whole situation. At the prices GM wants these days for these trucks, it is a hard pass.

I own a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado High Country with 6.2L. I test drove a 2023 GMC Elevation model which is the base Canyon model for the GMC line. As my Silverado is the pinnacle for the Chevy 1/2 ton line, I was very curious about the new Canyon/Colorado series of trucks. I was more than pleasantly surprised at this base model in almost every aspect. I loved the smaller size right away as it was so easy to pull into spots compared to my Silverado, of course. The engine was quite peppy but to Redline review felt more like a diesel in the way the power was delivered. It's nothing like my 6.2, but nonetheless very peppy and certainly up to most any task. I'm seriously considering downsizing. However, I'm more interested in the AT4 model me thinks at the moment. Just the right combination for me at this time. But still in consideration at this moment.

I love and want this truck, but like others the price is a little hard to digest. My dad bought a full-size Ram Rebel in 2018 for $47k (yes, I know-pre-COVID, but still), and both the Canyon and Colorado can push into the mid-60s. The Bison versions are probably gonna crest $70k. Good lord.
Also, I know not everybody cares about these things, but the hard plastic on the top of the doors is really unacceptable. That seems more like old school GM, which (for example) once decided against giving the Yukon Denali real wood because they didn't want it to step on the Escalade's toes. As we mentioned, these trucks are NOT cheap, so the interior should be reflective of the price and not some stupid hierarchy that GM's trying to maintain.

I was thinking the same thing! I think what's going on is that it's got the same tuning as the bigger trucks ( 5.3 and 6.2). GM uses torque management and it kills the 0-60 time if you brake torque it!! I tried it on a 1500 Denali 6.2 a couple of years ago, If you just stab the throttle from a dead stop the thing rips, but when I did a brake torque, it almost felt like it went into limp mode??
