I'm thinking of investing in one of these. The one in dells is a 970 and I was wondering if it could run games like Black ops 3, Rainbow siege ect. I heard this gets really over heated? Also overall would I be able to be used while traveling like I mean would it be to heavy to put in a laptop bag?
I just got one and absolutely love it. I am not a gamer, but I always liked to buy this type of machine because it better future proofs it. This is evident by my Sony machine from 2009 which finally took a crap on me, but ran most things current ok. I also have a MBP, but enjoy this machine a lot better, although not a super fan of Win10.
Still have this laptop in 2023 with the 4K UHD display and the graphics amp running a 3060 TI. It doesn't do too well with CPU-bound games like Elden Ring or AC Origins but can handle many other modern titles well, including RDR2 and God of War. Currently playing System Shock remake on high preset and it's hitting a steady 60 with no problems.
Hey how much better is this laptop than the Dell Inspiron 14? It has an Intel Celeron processor N3050. 2GB RAM, 32GB eMMC. I’m obviously upgrading when you look at these specs. But I’m curious how much more power I’ll have in this new laptop. I’m not much of a computer gamer. I prefer playing on a gaming console. But I often overwork the laptops my dad gets me. I’m a bit of a multi tasker and so I usually end up slowing down the computer greatly. I’m somebody who will sometimes have 2-3 browsers open with around 6-9tabs open in each, and maybe I’ll even have a couple other applications open at once. I am attracted to gaming laptops for this reason. Because they pack a lot of power. I couldn’t care less about the graphics however. 1080p heck even 720p would be fine for me. I’m more concerned about being able to multi task. I suppose ditching out a few couple extra hundred dollars is worth it if I’m always working on my laptop for work and school. This will be my first laptop and I can only spare up to $800 right now. I actually got a deal for it on offer up for $650. It’s now 2020.
I bought a used Alienware 17 R3 but the dedicated gpu gtx 980m doesn't work. It has been detected having a problem in device manager so it is not operating on it. Code 43 an error has occured with this device and it has been stopped. Is it possible to swap the gtx 980m with a new 980m? Or are both cpu and gpu soldered on all Alienware 17?
Is this good specs for my alienware 17 r3? Intel® Core™ i7-6820HK (Quad Core, 8 MB cache, dynamik overclocked up to 4,1 GHz) NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980M with 8 GB GDDR5 17,3" UHD-screen (3840 x 2160)
Hello +TheFlyingAwper , these are very good specs. The processor is very good , with most games only needing 3 GHz , with this , you have 4,1 GHz. The Screen is very crisp with the 4K resolution. Buy it if you can.
Shut the front door, man!!! Look at that GAMING DESK!!!!! at 01:55 You guys gotta answer me on where you've gotten this pieace of a glorious pc holder lol
what I've noticed is that bigger is better. for instance, the basic 15 inch has a i5 core. the basic 17 inch has a i7 core. and it's graphics and overall performance is much greater then the 15 inch
guys i need some help...i bought an Alienware 17r3 but i cant play Rainbow Six Siege....i already updated the latest bios and geforce update but i only get 50fps in Rainbow...can you guys like tell me what i should do, that i can play rainbow at 100fps or even more.....PLZ HELP!!!!!
Gaming laptops sound good on paper, but in reality they are impractical. I've had an Alienware 17 R3 since July, and I've gotta say, I'd rather own a Macbook and build a PC. You DON'T need to game while you're on the go (or in my case, do video rendering and 3D renderings). Take a Macbook with you, it's cheaper, lighter, and more satisfying. The build quality of a Macbook is superb, while that of the Alienware leaves something to be desired. Too much plastic, not very solid feeling for a $2,000 laptop, the screen and keyboard are kinda crappy. You CANNOT change them out. Despite that, the Alienware weighs a ton. It's bad at laptop things, which generally revolve around basic photo editing, taking notes, email, and browsing the web. It's got an abysmal battery life, one battery charge will not get me through the day. I'm outlet hunting for at least part of the day, nearly every day. I know people like to compare gaming laptops versus Macbooks by specs alone, but don't. Don't do it. OS X is far more stable than Windows 10, in my experience. You can't put a price on overall user friendliness and enjoyment. My 2011 Macbook Pro has never crashed once, whereas I got 3 BSODs on my Alienware in the first week of owning it due to driver issues. It's easier to use, you don't have to deal with drivers, the apps aren't shit, and Apple writes really good software whereas Microsoft's default apps are generally shitty and poorly thought-out. I'm not a fanboy. _I've just used both_. And believe me, Apple's got a huge advantage in the laptop department. You won't go home disappointed if you get one. The build quality will leave you feeling satisfied. It's stylish, which is very good if you're bringing one to a professional environment. The keyboard feels amazing, which makes typing a breeze. It's easy to use, which is important for a laptop. Also, Macs have great resale value. These things all add up to mean that the Macbook has a far better value than the Alienware, prices aside. If you want graphical power, *build a desktop*. You DON'T need to use graphical power on the go. If you build a desktop, you get a choice in every component down to the keyboard and monitor. You pick your ports, you choose your graphics card, you get a choice in form factor, all at a far lower price. You change things out when you want to, or when they break. All extremely important if you're using it as a video workstation.
4k 980m is dumb. No need to game in anything than a 720 or 1080p settings. You get good 45-60 frame rates on the road. If u hook up the gpu amplifier u get 60fps and above. 4k is useless because no game has fully taken advantage of full 4k 60fps. Most you will get from anything you are running on 4k is maybe 30fps-60fps. Most of the cool games are in Unreal which mean no sli.
anyone heard of the mother board frying issie? I ordered mine and I'm live out of the States and I won't have the option of return for repair! I'm so scared because of all the comments I read about this.. any way to avoid that? I'm not a gamer and im simply gonna use it as a desktop replacement.
Pretty good and i guess genuine review. Not perfect though. Now I know I need to get a graphics amplifier XD For the longest time, I thought that was optional. Guess I was wrong hehehe

+khoaiii asus is coming out w a external gpu via usb type c and razed core will soon be compatible on other laptops. last true aw was the 17r1 aka ranger the new ones are just a pita to clean and service and its bga. I got a desktop cpu 6700k that blows the 6700hq and 6820hk out of the water + external gpu over usb type c and i got myself a desktop. Now what advantage are you talking about? The graphics amp will soon be phased out as the usb type c is here mate :)
+Jason Mak (JPSM) the asus amp works on any laptop with usb c other than its own brand?? I remembered that they said that it only works on their laptops.
of course they wont confirm it but it all depends on your current machine if they fix it to accept graphics amp via usb type c. But if your buying a laptop because of the amp why not get a desktop? The essence of what a "laptop" is, is gone if you think about connecting an amp :) Gl bringing around any graphics amp + full sized desktop gpu with you in a coffee shop or whatever. Point is, Head to head aw is SH**. BGA= if something breaks i.e. cpu whole mobo gets replaced. both have 980m but a 6820hk is not in the same league as a desktop 6700k. And no gsync??? Wake up, Alienware! I owned a 15r1 and 13r2 and both are nice but you gotta accept the new machines are crippled as hell. Lmao I could see where since she's Asian and that happens to Asians more than others... Being bought and sold I mean, I see where somebody could take offense. But I think it was just a joke. Albeit a kind of crude one but I've said it before too.
When you review a gaming laptop, don't forget to mention the dedicated graphics card that comes with it.
Ikr, it's such a big aspect
i think it's 980m
arun aravind it is
the one that comes with it is the gtx 970m sir. the gtx 980m is an upgrade
I have to know, good review btw, but how in the hell are you gaming using the trackpad and or arrow keys as a mouse?
Yeah wtf?
XD
this is actually a legit question lol. I cant even play minesweeper adequately on the pad xD
It can be done. You would be surprised. Try gaming with just arrow keys and the touchpad on CS: GO.
Anthony Abelardo I know it can be done but that doesn't mean its practical lol especially in csgo.
I just got one and absolutely love it. I am not a gamer, but I always liked to buy this type of machine because it better future proofs it.
