That laptop is a freaking beast! awesome review! Now I know what laptop I want to buy after my current laptop doesn't keep up anymore. But by then, there will probably be new better gaming laptops. If my gtx 950m is going to get close to that performance I will have to overclock it so much the components will only last for about an other hour before it completely dies! But I won't do it till it's needed to keep up the performance.
I ordered a 1st gen alienware 13 and had buyers remorse on not upgrading the screen quality. So, I splurged and ordered the new alienware 17 with 512 ssd, and 32gb ram. Figured it'd be a nice upgrade for the occasional world of warcraft. nice video, makes me happy to have ordered it.
I just picked up one from the Dell Outlet, for $1950, (added 4 warranty/accidental) with a Intel Core 7th Generation i7-7700HQ , NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB, 256GB PCIe M.2 NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive (Boot Drive) , 16GB DDR4 Non-ECC SDRAM 2400MHz (2x8GB) and 1TB 2.5inch SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM). I expect on Sept 29th. This will replace my 3 year old, ASUS G750JS. Thanks for the review, convinced me I did not make a bad purchase.

Can you make a review about the internal thermals ? I have seen alot of people complaining about the cpu temp reaching the high 90's and some even 100.
Just the 6820HK made for overclocking is heating up that high. If you don't need overclocking you are safe with the 6700HQ they are both more or less at the same level without overclocking. But anyway 90° is not to much for a CPU like this. The "new" cooling system can handle this.
The thermal issues are very real and with a quick search here on RUclips, you can find tons of videos about the complaints. You'll also find many videos of actual tear downs of the machine to apply real thermal paste, thinner heat pads, and even physical adjustments to part of the heat sink itself. I've been watching tons of vids on this laptop and had basically chosen it as my new gaming rig because it's the best all around, but the thermal issues are real.

I have been trying to order from Dell for 6 weeks. All they have done is give me the run around. I attempted to order an Alienware 17 from Dell. The first attemp was on Nov 26th. On the day before the machine should have arrived I was given a notice that it was cancelled by me (it was not cancelled by me). I then contacted them and the recreated the order. The second order attempt was the same result except this time the order was cancelled with the reason given that "cancelled due to technical issue". So again the redo the order this time they increased the ram and ssd capacity as a an attempt to compensate me for them being completely incompetent and it was guaranteed to be delivered by the 30th. So on the 29th I log in to the website I see it shows my "custom build is complete but not shipped" I email the person I have been in contact with asking what is going on and get the "it's been delayed" issue. I then attempted to contact them on Facebook, which resulted in very horrible responses of "Our Engineering is having to QA" I can barely get them to respond on this I have been a Dell customer for a long time and have never been treated like this. They are horrible and have not been willing to assist with their screw ups. They claim they emailed me with an update, that never occurred. I have experience in the field of deploying machines/computers to clients on a request basis, never has it taken almost a month and a half to send out a computer 48 hours at the most and that is when there is a catastrophic issue hindering the build. This is an unacceptable way to treat a customer who was willing to spend thousands on one machine. How can you sell a machine when you aren't even capable of building it?
I would be interested if you have received your machine yet. I just ordered an Alienware 17 2 days ago and they say delivery between Jan 11th and Jan 18th.
I have not received and it hasn't shipped yet. Actually called them this morning and in the same phone call I was told the build was still on hold and it is almost built. So going by the fact they don't know where my build is at I don't know where my build is at..........

Why are people getting these with 1060s? It's literally not worth it for all the other specs if you stick with a 1060. What makes the 17inch model specifically blessed is that you have both the 1070 and 1080 options. If you are only going with the 1060 you might as well save the money and buy the 13 inch model when it is offered.

So I would like to know if the drivers of the gpu is the same as the desktop version... just right click, and look above the "new" setting for creating folders and other things, where it should be nvidia control panel and open it. After that look for something called display setting where there should be saturation(and other setting) and at the end Color Vibrence(the one that i want to know if laptops with pascal gpus have)...

I would like to ask how do I maximize the performance when gaming while unplugged to the charger. i tried changing the batt power settings to maximize performance. and nvidia geforce max perf. but I still get 30fps max using battery alone. but when plugged to the charger fps works fine

Didn't get a notice back when you posted your response so I missed it. But thanks :) I ended up finding a good deal on a last gen but practically new 17 r3 with the 4k display and 970m for $900 (still under warranty). I think that'll do me just fine for now, until it's time to get that gpu amp later on when the 970 can't keep up anymore.
i'm planning to get the 17 but there's alot of bad reviews about screen bleeding and thermal problems.. but i'm getting a qhd 120hz gsync display not the 4k i hope there will be no issues
John Paul Or Jp It can have banding issues, but that's not the fault of Alienware, it's an industry-wide issue with the panel made by AOU. I hope you're enjoying your laptop though! :)
I picked up te one with a 1080 screen. There is some mild light bleeding sad to say. As far as heat is concerned though this is the best laptop I have ever owned as far as temps. I feel the design as far as that goes is flawless. I push it for hours with games like Witcher 3 etc on ultra with no issues. Good luck on your purchase:D

How loud does this get when just browsing the web? Since fand sound kinda matters to me but like it's not annoying or anything right?

So I would like to know if the drivers of the gpu is the same as the desktop version... just right click, and look above the "new" setting for creating folders and other things, where it should be nvidia control panel and open it. After that look for something called display setting where there should be saturation(and other setting) and at the end Color Vibrence(the one that i want to know if laptops with pascal gpus have)...
Hi, I have a AW17 R4 gtx1060. I would like to ask how do I maximize the performance when gaming while unplugged to the charger. i tried changing the batt power settings to maximize performance. and nvidia geforce max perf. but I still get 30fps max using battery alone. but when plugged to the charger fps works fine

Didn't get a notice back when you posted your response so I missed it. But thanks :) I ended up finding a good deal on a last gen but practically new 17 r3 with the 4k display and 970m for $900 (still under warranty). I think that'll do me just fine for now, until it's time to get that gpu amp later on when the 970 can't keep up anymore.
i'm planning to get the 17 but there's alot of bad reviews about screen bleeding and thermal problems.. but i'm getting a qhd 120hz gsync display not the 4k i hope there will be no issues

John Paul Or Jp It can have banding issues, but that's not the fault of Alienware, it's an industry-wide issue with the panel made by AOU. I hope you're enjoying your laptop though! :)
I picked up te one with a 1080 screen. There is some mild light bleeding sad to say. As far as heat is concerned though this is the best laptop I have ever owned as far as temps. I feel the design as far as that goes is flawless. I push it for hours with games like Witcher 3 etc on ultra with no issues.

Actually this is the answer i want to know. newer doesn't always mean better. r4 seems to have heating issues.
