    These sketches are up there in my favoruite of all time. Being gay myself, its nice to see the joke being on the stereotype and how stupidly people act when you say youre gay. Its a breath of fresh air when shows a lot of the time just some cheap shots making the charachter stereotypical. Its relatable and funny for me, while educating and entertaining those who cant relate. Brilliant writing here 👏

    His parents are so supportive. The mother is hilarious. I think that this sketch shows that the people are good people and love their son no matter what. I like the fact that when others find out that he is gay, they don’t hurt or mistreat this man. They want fashion and decorating tips. Lol. He stands up for himself by not volunteering to do these things. I loved the sketch. The people may not be rich, but they are smart, kind and loving. That is worth more than gold.

      @@bm4114 In my opinion, the value in sketches like this is not pretending like this is reality, but in showing people (particularly people who are not gay or possibly even homophobic) how EASY it would be for this to become reality. It's like showing a hypothetical of "What if you were actually nice to gay people?".
      It is demonstrating to people who oppose gay rights (or are just mean to gay people) "Look, society wouldn't crumble. You can treat gay people with respect and still have a decent life yourself. Nobody gains anything from your homophobia and everyone would be better off if you just didn't do that." If every piece of media was "accurate to reality"- i.e. filled with homophobia, etc.- homophobes would probably just feel even more affirmed in their opinions because all of the media they consume would show characters agreeing with them.

    • @bm4114
      @bm4114 2 года назад +2

      @@madeleine61509 my reply was not about the sketch, it was about the original commenter’s fantasy that the sketch reflects reality, or that this sketch should be what reality looks like. But let’s talk about the sketch. It’s for straight people, as you say to “demonstrate the world won’t crumble”, but it sure does pigeon hole gays as a certain thing, decorators and makeup artists, and clearly it is making the gay guy uncomfortable, as he is not one of those types of gays. You see the people in this town are so clueless about anything gay that even when they are being “open minded” they’re still a bunch of idiots harming a gay person. Sure the sketch is a fantasy and a joke, but as a gay person it’s not the fantasy or the joke for me. Marking his coming out with a series of stereotypes about gays and we’re all supposed to laugh and feel good. Can’t help but feel like this sketch is for straight people who just don’t get it, and probably never will. Listen, and I’m sure you already know this, but if a gay person comes out to you, don’t ask them for decorating advice unless they are a decorator and you’re paying them. Just my perspective and I wouldn’t dare tell someone else they should agree with me, gay or straight.

    Since I came out as gay it’s been the other way. Immediately my Dad wants to take me to matches and to go races etc. Dad just because I’m girl attracted to other girls does not mean I’m masculine. I’d rather go shopping with my Mum tbh. My mum is only worried about me giving her grandkids.

      Yea, that's what many of the people commenting about how great it is that they are "so accepting" are missing. They literally treat him like a different person bc of his sexuality, not his real interests. Doesn't matter if they aren't calling him names, they are still applying a stereotype.

      All depends, 'a NI accent' as such does not exist, there are hundreds, maybe thousands of different ones. Belfast (also depending where from in Belfast) doesn't sound the same full stop compared to Ballymoney (more Scottish) , Londonderry, Omagh or Newry. Just like everywhere else.

This is pretty much how I reacted when my eldest son told us he was gay when he was in his early 20’s. I had been waiting for years for him to get up the nerve to tell us and come out publicly!
    Catherine Tate can take on so many different characters and accents and be totally believable, she is so underrated. My favourite character of hers has to be old Nan though. 😂

    and then you finally take the plunge, consequences be damned!, i'd rather be hated for someone I am than loved for someone I'm not!!!!!....
