Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I painted this and told my wife what you said about being able to paint anything if I could do this. She said how about painting the house.
As long as you know where the lights coming from I don’t see why you can’t pull this off 😉
🤣🤣🤣
@@hdee5615 funny and clever 🤣👏
LOL ~ very wifey :-)
😂
well I guess i'm painting an apple today lol
yes! if you post it on IG tagged it with #paintcoach.
I started painting an apple but ended up eating my subject. It happens more than I like to admit.
@@claygreen4723 this made me chuckle hardd hahah
Hahahaah I legit said the same thing whilst watching
@@claygreen4723 Please don't take up portraiture.
I really hope you understand how much you help people like me who are so new and shy in the oil painting world. You make this less intimidating by explaining everything in so much detail without making it sound too complicated- perfect for such a newbie like me 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I’m so happy you are learning from my videos! 😁
@paintcoach does this pertain to acrylics as well? I am a rookie and don’t want to waste oil paint
@@sfcucci try 1 example each, oil and acrylic. This will make it easier for you to determine how far you're able to "generalize" , given your unique circumstances...
@@paintcoach Great video(s) no b.s
No pretention just a process. Who / where did you learn. Have you had an apprenticeship with an artist established before yourself.
1. Block out values of whole piece as under layer
2. Add in colour for each section - start with average colour (squinting down) - allows to push lighter and darker
3. Grayscale filter allows you to gauge values
4. Every piece of canvas covered in paint
Details
5. Ligher/darker value shapes
6. Consider light sources - sharp/dim, warm/cool, near/far, secondary light sources
7. Consider planes (not smooth sphere)
8. Don't forget background/floor + reflected light of object onto floor
thank you for this list!😊
4:30 ...”and now we are really cooking with gas” throws back a can of Lime LaCroix
Squinting the eyes to see value is one of the first lessons I learned in my first college drawing class. Best piece of art technique advice I've ever been given. Odd though that I never took an oil painting class and now that seems to be what I want to work at... I love your videos, down-to-earth, easy to understand and learn from, thank you!
Squinting the eyes was the first lesson I was given too. However, I'm only on my fourth lesson and have yet to figure out how it works, lol
@@sweetysmart0505 Lots of good luck, just look at darks and lights rather than colors, that might help!
But how do you see the value in color? That's very hard. I cant cope with this.
@@milosleng1175 It actually works the same with color as it does with black/white/grey tones!
I just take off my glasses lol
You can't believe how this video really was helping me upgrade my painting skill almost instantly! Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Just finished my first complete oil painting with the help of this video, it made me remember why I love art.
Why you love art?
@@edizgunes shhh the experience
I do digital art and this video was an amazing reminded on what to focus on and how to draw, step by step, in a short consice way
I love your nonchalant explanations so much better than feeling like I'm getting an art professors lecture. Truly broke it down into something the everyday Joe like myself would understand
Chris, I’m an experienced oil painter/teacher and you have expressed all the approaches so clearly that I’m sure you warrant all the followers you have! Continue the good work😊
I can’t believe I’m binge watching all your videos because I’m about to start oil painting.
I can't concentrate with so many Cages staring at me

Out of the hundreds of painting videos I've watched over the last year, this may be the most important. I wish I had watched it first. Things are fitting into place. Everything but a good place to paint.

I tried to paint it and you are the best
Hi again! I ve tried your tips today and ot worked! It was the first time ever that I actually understood what i was doing. I painted an apple and then tried a portrait immediately)))) i chose some photo of a man and tried to follow the same process that i had with the apple one. The result is not look-a-like, BUT! I managed all those shadows and highligts thing that i never could do before watching your video.
I see an ocean of possibilities now, thanks to you!
You have an amazing channel and you are definately a great teacher! Please do not stop! ❤️❤️☀️☀️☀️🙏🙏🙏
So it’s about the light! Thank you for this.
