I have concluded that the true meaning of success does not depend on one’s socio-economic status.
The true meaning of success is being totally content at any given moment with your life, as it is.
That’s why a “poor” person can be successful in his contentment while a “rich” person can be unsuccessful in his discontent.
      Just a thought.

Inspirational video! I was living on $250 monthly SSI in 1993 and saved money in a horrible housing project in MA and bought a fixer upper house in Pittsburgh PA for $7,000 and moved myself in a 33 foot uhaul with a front seat full of cats in cages and a bucket of fancy goldfish by my left foot. It can be done! I saved every penny and was very blessed to achieve this miracle. I dont tithe as churches often have too much money. Instead I give $100 monthly to a prison book program tbat sends good books free to prisoners and each book can be read by hundreds of grateful inmates who are often without resources or family. An excellent way to please God!

It is forgiven if one becomes disabled but first my Dr. completed the form wrong, form got bounced back to me, Dr. refused to do it again, now one can just send in the form from SS stating the person is disabled but the form I was sent 10 years ago is a different form...arrrrgggh...but, that aside....I see so many elderly people working at the grocery store to which I go most often, some with physical disabilities (such as a man who lost an arm and bags groceries) who put me to shame when I complain.

Growing up in the 50's with Depression-era parents really helped prepare me for now living on a disability-to-retirement fixed income. Mom cooked using recipes from the Depression to feed 5 people..my favorite meal is still meatloaf. She used 1lb of ground beef to line sides and bottom of loaf pan, filled center with bread stuffing, and then topped the loaf. A special treat was brown gravy over your slice. I use her recipe and utilize mini loaf or muffin pans and freeze the extras. Oatmeal, which I hated, was a filling breakfast and I'm grateful that I began to love oatmeal years later. One of the biggest mistakes that liberalizing education (I'm not talking politics here) made was dropping classes like Home Economics. Everyone benefits when they learn basic cooking, sewing - even just hemming pants and replacing buttons, how to handle money and what credit is, etc. Things have become too disposable...I still remember polishing my leather school shoes and church shoes to make them last and look good...until the day he died, my husband refused to buy shoes and work boots that could not be re-soled or re-heeled. We need to look at the small things to save because if we do then the larger things gradually fall into place.

Mobile homes are a great affordable option. Just make sure you get one that’s safe, and have a checked out before you buy it. In Southern California though, space rents start at about $1100 a month.
The mobile home park, up the street from me the rents are $1700 a month, and who knows what they’re paying on their house payments? The hard part is qualifying to live in a mobile home park. You have to show an income of three times The pad rent. Which means you have to show an income of $5100 a month just to qualify. So I don’t know why people call mobile home park residents “trailer trash”, Because it costs a lot of money even if you’re living in a “trailer”!

Don't think this way. We all make these mistakes at one time or another. I sometimes have this same problem. I see something I really want and use to buy it ( on credit, of course ) then when the bill came I couldn't believe I had spent so much. So I paid it all off and rarely use my credit card any more. If I see something I want I have learned to quiz myself, 1st. I ask myself " Self do you really need this ?" 2nd. Will you use it a lot or just once in a great while ? 3rd. Can you afford it if you didn't have a credit card ? And I would really pay attention to these answers . 9 out of 10 I don't buy it. We as Americans tend to buy more stuff than we need or use, or even have room in our houses for ( as to where to store them) . Thanks for sharing. Best of luck.

Many speakers and authors talk about the "Latte factor", but honestly, for those of us who are middle class or lower, it's not the latte factor that sets us back, well for us it wasn't anyways/we don't eat out much and definitely don't buy coffee... My goodness, if you can lower your big expenses like housing, food, transportation, those are concrete ways to feel empowered. Just learning to reduce meat consumption and eat cheaper sources of protein is a HUGE change in budget, but most speakers don't share those details as you guys have. You guys are EXTREMELY helpful and are helping a broad range of people. Please continue. :) Ryan and I felt so discouraged years ago when our income was lower and we'd listen to speakers talk about cutting things that we weren't consuming anyways. You guys talk about things that even those who are already frugal can cut. Our personal story is that our income is now better, but I still love listening to your ideas bc I want to be the best steward I can and bc I want us to focus our spending on what really matters to us in the long run. Thank you both!

And now my 2 kids are paying into it. I do not feel guilty about it, because I would have worked if I was not disabled and made a heck of a lot more.

I agree people should move if they can’t afford to live somewhere. I live in northwest Arkansas and love it. It can be expensive here also but not like many parts of the country. People are pretty much the same everywhere and you can make friends and find free entertainment. I also think that as you get older you want less “things”. I go to the library and outdoor concerts and have an indoor tv antenna. Churches have lots of activities also. I live a very full life on my social security-which by the way, we earned. Thanks ladies.

OfftoShambala I’m sorry that happened to you. Sometimes people do not have a choice but move away to a more affordable area or state. If you can’t live on your income, is it right to expect your family to pay your way? I’m sure most couldn’t unless they are well off. When it was time for my husband to retire, and he had to due to health reasons, we had no choice but to move away from our children to another state. We lived in NJ in a 900 sq ft house on a 50 x 100 ft lot and our mortgage was $1,100/mo and our property taxes were $6,000/yr, yes a year. There was absolutely no way that we would be able to survive on $1,800/mo there where everything is outrageously expensive and you’re taxed through death, yes, you’re family has to pay death taxes when you pass away. We had to make the hard choice to move away from our adult children and grandchildren so that we could survive. They certainly couldn’t supplement our income nor would we expect them to. We sold our home and moved to NC where we didn’t know a single soul and bought a house double that size with 7 acres, outright, and no longer have a mortgage and our property taxes are only $1,400/yr and now we live on $800/mo and save the difference. Everything is cheaper here and the people are wonderful and we quickly made terrific friends some of which we call family. Thank goodness for technology because we video chat with our children and grandchildren 1 to 2 times a week plus text daily and we drive up 8-1/2 hrs every 1-1/2 months to visit for several days. People can still have relationships with family if they really try or want to. It can be an effort because people get busy and caught up in their own world and problems, but it is doable if someone really wants to make it work. I know because my husband has family NJ and I have family in other states that don’t have a relationship with us, not that there is any bad blood between us, but they just don’t want to make the effort. That’s ok because that’s on them.

This way I don’t need to cook as often and devote my time to better things to do like volunteering or creative work. Also, I save gas/electric energy by batch cooking.

Please forgive the long comment, everyone, but I have to share this testimony- right now, I’m working a waitressing job that extends into some late hours (I have 8am college classes every Monday through Thursday and work as a nanny Monday through Friday 1-4). Whenever I have to close the restaurant, which has been a lot lately, I tend to get fairly cranky, and complain a lot. I have applied to other jobs, and dreaded going to work. While I know it isn’t right, and I try not to be bitter as well as I can- it’s a hard thing some days.
Last night, though, God gave me an attitude adjustment! I went in around 5:10 PM and clocked in for my 5:15 shift. Another waitress grabbed me and said “Oh Regan, I’m so glad you’re here. Everybody, we’ll be okay, she came in!” The other waitstaff had all called in sick or didn’t bother to show up. If I had done the same, or come with a bad attitude... the other server would have lost her marbles, no doubt. I don’t say that because I’m the best waitress in the world- I’m definitely not, haha, but that much work by yourself is truly impossible.
It was only she and I plus other staff until 11 PM when we finished up closing. It was difficult, but God helped us by giving me a burst of energy (it might have been Him giving me adrenaline from panic, lol), by placing our helpful and kind manager there last night, and by softening the hearts of customers. I tend to lose heart if I don’t make at least minimum wage in tip money- last night, a weeknight (it is rare to make much money at all serving on weekdays/weeknights) I brought home $120. It was the blessing I didn’t deserve, but am so grateful for. The job has brought my husband and I closer together by putting us in a closer to debt free situation, a better dedication to each other, and a more full relationship with the Lord as a couple. He is praised often and with enthusiasm in my home for the grace, mercy, and love that He brings to me daily! ❤️ If you think your financial situation is tough, friends, be grateful because there’s people who have it worse. More than that, however, we serve a mighty God-He has plans to make a hope and a future for us!

Most places will let u move in without a job, if you can pay 3 months in advance. But that is a lot, so understandably not easy, but it may not be the easiest to find the best job, but find something, even Walmart or amazon, just so you have something, but I would still try to have at least 2 or 3 months of bill money saved, or at least 2 months of food, 2 months of rent, and the deposit money to start utilities. It may be scary, but it will work if you have to do it to make life better.

I need prayers for someone to come and help me get rid of stuff I believe he will. Help me we could refinance our house and consolidate our credit cards which my hubby bring up without telling me for reasons I won't disclose here but anyway they're there 30000 and we can't make payments plus $1,400 mortgage on Social Security. In the times I'm have energy I'm trying to find someone to consolidate our bills then as soon as I can get rid of everything we can move and we'll have enough money to build a tiny house and be debt-free. This is my goal right now it seems impossible when there are days I can't even get out of bed but I know nothing is impossible with God. I would help anyone and I did when I was younger but now that I need help my family is just not there God bless them they have their lives honestly I don't know how I'm going to get out of this mess I'm not being a victim when I say I can't do it myself I keep trying I'm getting you something done but fatigue kicks in and then I sleep 3 days feel terrible looking at all this stuff I want to get out be debt-free God I wish I had never got credit cards we're going to food banks and going without whatever we can. when I look around this house I think how silly it was to buy a big house we don't need it and I can't keep it up. I don't even want to. I pray that someone will refi us but they see our c.f. debt and say forget it.if when we can get rid of this house and get out of here. We can have freedom. I'm almost 65 and I don't want to spend the rest of my life cleaning house. I want to spend it with my husband and my family.. @@kiddor909gmail The amount of your debt and the limited income you have indicates you cannot pay it off, ever. I would suggest two things: Consult with a bankruptcy lawyer and see if you can file. I have a friend who just did that, and he flushed $20,000 out of his life. If you don't have another property, or money assets somewhere, you should be eligible. Filing bankruptcy doesn't cost an arm and a leg, but you may have to work out a deal with your attorney to pay in increments, unless a family member can help you. I think my friend paid $1,200 for it. The second thing I would do is sell the house. It is too much for you. You can sell it as is. Meaning that you can just leave all the stuff you don't want in it, small, big, whatever, and usually the real estate agent will call a local second hand store or antique shop or both, and have them come and pay cash for the belongings. Since you are sick, you need someone to help you do this. If you can, hire someone from your area to come and help you, or even take over for you. You could also exchange rent for assistance. Run an ad to sell what you can online under Craigslist or Neighborhood. They are free, and with that money you can pay your assistant if you can't find someone to live in for a few months. Have that arrangement up front, so there are no surprises. Call your local Area Agency for the Aging (also deals with disabled) and see if you can get someone at no charge. I think the stress of what you are going through is affecting your health. Make sure that you are seeing a doctor and not overlooking what may be going on. Best to you.

Your mortgage payment is about the same as mine, so I can approximate what you paid for your house.
I didn’t see if you mentioned how long you’ve lived there, but if it’s a few years (or better, a lot of years), you probably have enough equity in your house to sell it and make a profit. After selling, get a small, cheap house or condo or rent.

    • @robbiethornton-peek3928
      @robbiethornton-peek3928 5 лет назад +3

Sell the house. If you’re sick it’s not a good idea to have the additional stress of trying to build a house. If you’re needing so much to do everything for you it’s totally insane to want to build a house. Sell the house you can’t afford & move into an apartment or buy a small less expensive condo. You don’t need space for “the kids” to stay when they come to visit once or twice a year (if you have kids). Sell stuff on Facebook market. We have done that. I bought a two bedroom condo because I didn’t want to house poor. Just because some realtor or mortgage company told you that you can “afford” something doesn’t mean you have buy it. You have a chance to be an “overcomes” instead of a “victim”.

He does what He does and is what He is, with or without a brick and mortar church. I hope your church is using your money to feed and clothe the poor, and not for a million dollar spire or a basketball court, or in some case, a new jet.

I think some people’s mistake is they save after they budget all their expenses, if they have something left after they pay all their bills then save it. I pay my mortgage first then I save a certain amount of my income. Then after that I budget everything else from what’s left. Save first!!

I have friends who really struggle financially....and they are very careful with their spending. Having no income is the worst situation, but if you have some income, there is usually some sort of viable option. Some areas of the country are completely ridiculous, as where I live, and I would move immediately if my income changed significantly. I wanted to mention that tithing is not a salvation requirement, but from the heart, and your family comes first. "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." 1 Timothy 5:8. Blessings ladies, and thank you for your ideas!

Yesterday I finally hit the jackpot at the thrift store as you suggested in earlier videos.I stuck to my shopping list and purchased a bread maker and a popcorn maker. Both items are virtually new at a total cost for both items, $23.98 plus tax. Retail cost for both was $190.00 plus tax. Now I can easily make my own gluten free bread, rolls and pasta and freshly popped (non GMO) popcorn.

This is really good. I've lived (with my youngest daughter, who is mentally handicapped) on as little as $350/month; we both also have auto-immune diseases (she has lupus; I have probably got fibromyalgia, plus several others). When this comes up on internet forums, there are always people who angrily insist "You CAN'T do that!" Well, sorry, but you can! As you have said, being debt-free is critical; being frugal is critical; being willing to move to less expensive areas is critical; being willing to 'lower' your standard of living is critical (*attitude* has a whole lot to do with whether your standard of living is acceptable to you or not). I'm going to share this video with several people.

I am a woman of faith, I'm in my 60s, single. I current live with my son. While living alone, however, I had to be real careful with spending. I give credit to God for the peace I have to live without or with very little. I love foreign cuisine, but can't afford the price of restaurants. So I've learned to fix my favorite foreign cuisines from my own kitchen. Even Beef Burgandy, a cheap red wine for 3 bucks. I make everything from scratch. But finding peace and happiness and doing with less, etc, is the biggest task. You can't watch a commercial without them "wooing" us, and telling we'd have better friends and admiration from coworkers to have all these things. As for tithing, its between you and God what you do. I tithe from other resources besides putting my widow's mite into the collection plate. Tithing my time, putting $5 bucks in the Red Kettles at Christmas time, etc. When I had a car, I even gave other folks rides to the store, or a doctor appointment....without complaint. I also applied for a food card from the state, that gave me a little extra month towards my grocery budget. I applied for the local ride program, depending on your income you might pay nothing to schedule a ride somewhere. And where I lived before living with my son, we had a great food pantry place. It was church run, and they had lots and lots of food. And that contributed towards my grocery budget. I would get all my produce that I love to eat from the pantry, saving me $15 bucks or more from the store! Day old bread.......no problem. I made grilled sandwiches from it, or made french toast. And in the summer time, local gardners gave produce to the pantry. I would go in on the last day of the week they were open, and ask for all the produce that would spoil before the following Monday. I'd take that home with me and can it. I also cut the cable. And just kept the internet to stream tv. $50 bucks for SlingTV and $39 for internet.....and when I had cable without movie channels, I was forking over $270 a month.
So we can do it, just takes being a tightwad.

Here in NY utilities are not part of the rent. The rent here is constantly rising, and the waiting lists to get into an income based apartment are all years long. I have looked into moving to another state but the rent I can afford are in areas that require a car which I don’t have. Also consider that some people are on disability due to mental health issues, and cannot just pick up and move away from their network of family/support/doctors. Drastic changes to their lives can be detrimental to their health situation. Not everyone has the capacity to ‘suck it up’ and make huge changes to their lives so easily. There’s a fine line between tough talk and being insensitive. We are all on disability for different reasons.

Sorry, and I have been where you are. 1 box of kraft Mac and Cheese and a can of tuna to last 2 days. As an RN, I know they are not excuses for everyone. If you ate right, you might NOT be sick anymore. I have Rheumatoid arthritis, DM, hashimotos, and autoimmune blepharitis and would rather spend more on whole food and pasture raised to feel better. If you are truly Christian, DON'T JUDGE. I agree w your stance on integrity. Everyone on SS isn't poor if you have had a decent job all your life. Homesteading cures much of this-urban if necessary. Grow your own. Raise chickens and rabbits if you can. Many of your suggestions are great, but we all don't have the same needs. Values are so important.

I once lived on $245 a month with 2 kids. No one expected a Christmas present from me but what I ended up giving them turned out to be everyone's favorite present that year, and what they ended up wanting me to give them every year there after. I hollowed out all the eggs I bought that year and I painted the eggs and turned them into Christmas ornaments (I got the paints, the paint brushes and some ribbon at a garage sale, ridiculously cheap, and the egg shells were basically free since we ate the eggs and the shells were something that would normally have ended up in the trash).

I firmly believe in self reliance on everything we can realistically control...health care is not one of them! We can choose where we live, we raised 5 kids in a $36,000 house with one bathroom. We still live here and our grown children would be devastated if we sold it. We shared one vehicle for many years...I made very frugal meals....my children earned things and were not "entitled" to anything (except love). But what we can not control is our health or healthcare costs. I can't bargain shop when there is only one local hospital or choose when my kids got sick. I have a rare life threatening hereditary disease (so does my daughter) our medication is $50,000 a month. We relied on state government assistance for our secondary insurance and I don't regret it for a second!!
