- A rapid expansion and makeover of the Indian road network has ensured that India is steadily on track to reach standards at par with the best in the world. Under the central government’s `Bharatmala’ project, India has been vigorously building a solid network of roads, highways and expressways.India also has an aim to build at least 26 green expressways by 2025.Approximately over 60 percent of Indian cargo movement is through the road and highway system.

All good and well, but it has to be maintained well. Autorickshaws and other slow moving vehicles must be banned. Trucks must travel on the slowest lane. You can't have stray cows and dogs roaming around on highways or even people walking along the side. It must be only vehicles who can travel at a good speed and cars can't stop on the side to take pictures or what not. There has to be rest areas. Lane discipline is big issue as well, cars have to travel in the lane they are in. Reducing honking for no reason is also a big issue.

Excellent.. all very good and cheery. But the fact remains that the condition internal roads within city and municipal limits is, at best ,sorry, shameful and outright pathetic...daily commute is a nightmare and more risky than industrial accidents.
Local municipality govt must responsible for the condition of daily commuters in city and town. For that local resident must ask question to the responsible authority.

More highways then more cars which inturn making them useless...traffic congestion over expressways and unavailability of the emergency teams is slowing down economy only...Delhi Meerut expressway, Delhi Gurugram expressway, Delhi Noida expressway, Noida-Gr. Noida expressway etc. they always remain congested.

Exactly, but it seems like Indian urban planners are not willing to look past the American model of urban planning and we all know that highways are super inefficient. Although, India is constructing dedicated freight rail corridors, which is the most efficient way to transport cargo. So, I assume most of these expressways will be used by private vehicles, which I think is a waste of money when that money could be used to improve the conditions of existing roads and railways. Give it some years, and India will realise they are inefficient and will start tearing the highways down like the USA is doing now.

Road construction is good but still poor can't afford to travel by bus and they prefer train. So parallel development of train is important but I doubt any development is happening on trains except privatization etc. Even now Karnataka has the poorest train connectivity but Modi is not worried as he looking at bullet trains between Mumbai and Ahemdabad which few can afford.
What about dedicated freight corridor and 81% electrification. Railway network in northeast and to Chittagong and mayanmar ports. Improved doubling and less accidents. USBRL and station redevelopment.
Read up more. DFCs, 400 VBs, USBRL etc. By the way, cost of transportation is a big part in cost of each and every item.

India does not have the same quality of roads as USA. I stay here. The network here is complete. India has first to create the network . Also quality of interstate highways is much better than India. It might not be as good as China but for sure better than India.

City roads are responsibility of Municipality (not National Highway Authority headed by Gadkari ji)

Dear Indians, roads and highways are not the answer, especially in a very high population density country like India. The congestion will be terrible in 5-10 years because of *induced demand* and a lot of forest area with endangered animals will be cut down because of the sprawl.
The solution is more transit systems like trains, trams, busses and cable cars. There should also be more walking and cycling lanes for last mile connectivity. All of these solutions are more space-efficient than cars and safer than motorcycles on roads.

India is also the country building most metros and regional rails in the world, a high speed rail network and also upgrading the existing rail network for medium to high speed trains plus building dedicated freight corridors for rail

Tolls are collected but no one maintains broken roads. All highways are undulated, broken and with large potholes. This js the condition everywhere. Thats why indias infrastructure is such a mess
