I love my minifreak!!! It was basically my introduction 16 step visual sequencing! Funny story - I actually bought it to record into my RC505 for live looping but one day was just jamming and realized I can use it as a standalone sequencer and so have used it as such ever since. That little thing blows my mind every time I play it hahaha
16:27 The album you're thinking of is Oversteps, and yes I noticed the resemblance too! I'd personally love to see if the Mini could recreate that ripping stereo bass from "Treale"
Was my first buy when i started getting back into synthesis. I've spent hours running stuff into that conb filter with its cutoff assigned to a macro. Get a beat going on other equipment, run it to audio in and set various things on the macro strips, some incredible performance effects. You can assign cycling env to amplitude and put its rise/fall on the macro to get a sick gate effect. And you said you get 3 custom mod destinations but there are 9 of em
I’ve been fighting the temptation to buy this thing for a year. Yelling at myself to just look around my studio at all the awesome stuff I already have. Now you come and do this to me? Right after I was just rewatching your Blastbeats video? You’re killing me. I think you should chip in on my gear bills. I have a 10k vinyl bill. This is torture.
I think its the best sounding digital synth i´ve ever heard! I´ve got the microfreak, but the Mini is just the much better synth! More vioces, real keys and an amazing form factor! I´m waiting for the megafreak!!! Maybe 12 or 16 Voices?
i also agree with the filter. I was not a big fan of it. Also, you have to give up the cycling envelope if you want it to modulate the filter, and even then that's not great. Still an amazing instrument for its price and the design is wicked
A lot of synth, many sounds and textures. I'm with you on the main filter; I felt that way about my microfreak, although I did love the synth until the audio stopped working. I still use it as a controller for midi and cv.
You’re so right about Arturia’s hardware being forward-thinking. I don’t love everything they do, but all of it is at least interesting, and most of it is actively great.
Being new to all this stuff (coming from a hardcore punk guitarist background) I found the synth world to be overwhelming. But after watching loads of reviews and demos, lots on your channel, I finally got myself a Microfreak. I am blown away what Arturia releases for such an affordable price.
I own both the micro and the mini, and I have the exact same feelings about the filter! I think it somehow feels too sterile or or something..? I often find that completely omitting the filter and instead applying the envelope to the timbre is much more satisfying.. And as a bonus, on the micro you sort of go from paraphonic to polyphonic if you dont use the filter but instead applies envelope to the timbre
I’m not crazy about the VCF either. Deepmind’s VCFs are better. But aside from that & the onboard effects of the Behringer, the Minifreak has it beat everywhere else as a starter synth. Will probably live longer too.
I got a Hydrasynth Explorer after getting rid of the Microfreak. I didn't like the filter and - it could be just me - the output seemed quiet. Also hated the keyboard. I was always intrigued by the Minifreak, but now since I have the Hydrasynth, is a bit redundant to have both?
Yeah, learn one synthesizer very well and Hydrasynth will get you very far. And only then think about something new. I would then lust after some analog filter power (mono bass synth?!).
@@el_dani I’m just saying the freak is good value for money. I might also pick up a shapeshifter now the eurorack market is dropping and they are going for $250 on eBay.
I have had the minibrute 2s for 4 years. For 500 dollars there are no modular options that compare. If I did not have several other poly synths that cover the ground this does I would have bought it.
Atlantis second hand, Doepfer voice modules or if you want to drone/ explore musical depths: Vhikk X - on the other hand: nobody that is „only“ in the 500ish budget range should start with Eurorack (or maybe restrain to Doepfer 2nd hand IF living in prosperous market region)

Every freak should set up a Mini in their studio!
I love my minifreak!!! It was basically my introduction 16 step visual sequencing! You make the difference as a you tuber reviewing synths. Thank you.
i like it when your videos start with quite normal sounds and then go to industrial terror weirdness and you show having so much fun with it.
Totally agree. It sounds great, it feels good to play. You can run shit into the input. It's a very good instrument.
Wtf, after that demo i realize that i dont use used even 20% of his power. Changed my mind about selling this freaky
Wow, gonna buy this minifreak. I like industrial harsh noise and it seems this MiniFreak is very capable to deliver. Cheers.
Your colorful commentary complimented this beast!
I love how you navigate
Seeing the Waldorf Q lurking in the back - would be sick to see you do a video on that! Amazing demo as usual, Joey!
I thought he did a video on the quantum.
I see Access Virus, Evolved and Blofeld: all powerful weapons from the noughties. Where is the millennial power Q?
16:27 The album you're thinking of is Oversteps, and yes I noticed the resemblance too! I'd personally love to see if the Mini could recreate that ripping stereo bass from "Treale"
Yes you’re right, it’s hard to think straight when I’m blasting the synths
@@blush_response Makes sense. This was a great video, definitely considering this synth now!

Wie einfach jedes Review von Joey komplett eskaliert. 🥰

you are doing it right!
I’m spying that blofeld. Demo soon? Great demo I definitely overlooked this one.
Best demo I’ve heard of le mini. Shows its real potential.

Microfreak has user samples, though, which can be very powerful … !
i also agree with the filter. I was not a big fan of it. Also, you have to give up the cycling envelope if you want it to modulate the filter, and even then that's not great. Still an amazing instrument for its price and the design is wicked
Damn bro! Chill you just made me get a bunch of modular and now this?
Definitely getting the plugin version.
Waiting for the Blofeld review!!!

Modal sounds remind me of Coil.
thank you for your incredible videos!
may I ask whether it is a jaspers rack you use for your gear?

The microtonal capability is what sold me on it in the first place (setting keyboard to control pitch). It's possible to find exact EDOs.
you may have mentioned that, I'm half way through and need to pause for a bit
“I like silly things!”
Great review!

Not a fan of the filter either , but great review .... Solid release from Arturia indeed ...
would be awesome if you added chapters to your vid!
Chapter 1: starting
Chapter 2: it gets wild
Chapter 3: getting wetter
chapter 4: F*uck
chapter 5: F*uckity F*ck
Is the mini freak a better buy in 2024 than the waldof blofeld?
you make me spend a lot of money... :D
I had considered selling my Argon 8 and buying the Minifreak.
You would miss the keybed for sure. They're both cool, but I wouldn't want to part with my Argon
I’m not crazy about the VCF either. Deepmind’s VCFs are better. But aside from that & the onboard effects of the Behringer, the Minifreak has it beat everywhere else as a starter synth. Will probably live longer too.
I snagged a AR mkii a few weeks ago due to your videos... This is not helping!!! lol... Awesome shit man!
I started with three cats.
31:36 = ehhrrr mehhrrr gherrddd

I own Minifreak and personally dont see a point in owning Hydrasynth too . One or the other imo
I didn’t realize you had contributed the wave tables and presets to the Micro Freak. Cool!
Nice.. Minifreak or Blofeld for soundscapes and abstract textures?
Minifreak is way easier
@@blush_response yeah sure but soundwise only ?
Minifreak all day. Blofeld does sound great but the sound is not worth the interface. I might do a Blofeld video too
@@blush_response i always loved the waldorf sound..maybe an iridium :)))..but expansive for a digital synth!
Watch my quantum video. I am a huge Waldorf fan as well
🥦
I AGREE (can I have one)
And all for the price of that 10 year old module sat the the right of it by Intellijel
don‘t spit on the Shapeshifter, it‘s a Shapeshifter!

Lack of multi timbrality kills it
Push 3 kills almost every Poly synth on the market but still doesn‘t kill the market.
