I never think of The Wickwire Watch as being that scary but then I remember I couldn't write the Spektor scenes without the lights on...

As soon as I saw the title of this video I knew Wickwire would make an appearance! It actually gave me major Gaiman vibes so it makes sense that it belongs on this list haha. And I'd never heard of A Green and Ancient Light, but colour me intrigued!!
My personal favourite spooky season reads are Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, Renia by Karl Forshaw, Dream of Death City by PJ Nwosu, The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater and The Aspect series by Mark Holloway. Also, I finished up my alpha read for Andy Witham's newest book and holy smokes that was DARK and had some creepy horror elements, the spiders!!! 😅
Thanks for all the recs, Tori 🥰🥰

Wickwire does give massive Gaiman vibes!!! Totally agree. Green and Ancient Light is one of those books that you read and don't realize it's having an effect on you until it lives in your brain rent-free for months afterwards.

"Adult stories never made sense and they were slow to start" is a quote from "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" and that is exactly how I felt about the book. I loved "Coraline" so maybe I prefer his children's books. I will see in time. From 'Seasons of Albadone" I only loved the Autum portion, but I appreciated the messages from the other seasons. I also enjoyed "The Wickwire Watch" and the second volume from the series (a bit on the fence about all the praying to God and other Christian-like preaching). I am currently reading another SPFBO semifinalist that did not make the cut to finalist, but I love it so far. It is "To Steal the Sun" by S. M. Carter. Happy reading to you!

I'm adding some of these to my list for this fall, and I've maybe heard of and read a couple of the indie ones already...
For the Malazan crowd, as if the main books aren't spooky enough, I've started reading the Bauchelain and Korbal Broach novellas, and they're fun little tales for the season that flesh out the world and characters a little more. It feels weird to type the phrase "low-stakes Malazan" but here we are.

Ooooh, I can't wait to read Bauchelain and Korbal at some point! "Low-stakes Malazan" XD Love it.

Another good recommendation video Tori. A Green and Ancient Light sounds like a book for me, I'll be adding it to my wish list.
If you like fantasy stories with a little bit of magic, have you read any Charles De Lint? He is an excellent author of urban fantasy.

I hope you enjoy A Green and Ancient Light!!! Would love to hear your thoughts on it when you get that far. I have not read Charles de Lint yet, but I am aware of him as an author!

@@ToriTalks2 Charles De Lint is probably my favourite author, (he's certainly the author I have read the most books of) he is well worth trying out.

Tori, go read Piranesi. It is vibrant and atmospheric, a slowburn but short and beautifully written.
