When you reread your favorite book of all time years after your first experience, there's a good amount of nervousness. Will I still like it as much as I did the first time? Will it hit the same or different? Rereading my favorite fantasy book thirteen years after I read it the first time was an incredible experience. December was a great month to round out the last reads of the year, and I'm v...

We had some real lows this year, but that just gives us an amazing ride up to the highs. What were your most disappointing reads of 2024? Did any of your books surprise you? DANIEL ABRAHAM HECK TO THE YEAH
ITS BEN
I realized that more I like a book and the more I engage to a book then I need more time to pause and think before next book.
The one that springs to mind most for me is The Fox Cub Bold by Colin Dann - the first book I ever read that didn't have a happy ending (I was six). More than 40 years later, I can still remember with visceral clarity just how devastated I was when I read it.
I bet! Those first big "shifts" in reading are so impactful.
Awesome video! Your husband is very well spoken and I was captivated from beginning to end, even when he talked about those mangas I'm not attracted to personally (I used to watch/read them - such as Hunter x Hunter or Attack on Titans - and though I could appreciate some aspects, I just prefer novels overall). I've read A Shadow In Summer and A Betrayal In Winter and can't wait to continue on the series! I would have done it sooner if I wasn't forced to read them on my Kindle. For now, A Shadow is my favorite (and I feel I will love it even more once I reread it after finishing the quartet), but the main female character in book #2 has stucked with me (can't remember her name right now 🙈). I loved how Abraham addressed her biased worldview by the end, I just wish the political machinations were even more on the forefront.
BEN! ♫ bingely bingely beep ♫ How lovely to hear from you! I couldn't be happier to hear you're enjoying your first forays into Sir Terry's Disc. He has a great deal to say about the way humanity *is* and that he's able to do it with such poignancy and wit, makes his writing a true joy to read. LPQ is on the docket this year for me and you're now on the list of people who convinced me to pick it up. Have a wonderful 2025 Ben, we appreciate you! ❤
Numbers don’t matter. Stop the pressure, relax and read what you want.
Thanks for watching!
I just CAN'T!! annotate a book that is read for pleasure, study books yes but couldn't even write in my University books!!
That’s absolutely fair. :)
I really love the color combinations you chose. I am starting my first bullet journal and decided to go with a gothic Ravenclaw vibe. Black/Blue, Florals, Astronomy... 🥰
Thank you so much! I love your inspiration choice, that's going to be beautiful. I'm going to have a Slytherin inspired spread later on in mine that I'm super excited about! I hope you have an amazing time designing your journal this year. :)
One thing I'm planning on doing this year is prioritizing reading books I own because I have some I've had since I bought them from a used book store my freshman year of college that I haven't gotten around to yet. I want to read one or two of those a month and the rest working on some of the series I've started over the years.
LPQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Long Price Quartet and Terry Pratchett both shooting higher and higher up TBR. I could use some humor in my reading as there is precious little.
I’m new to booktube and I don’t do what most booktubers do. I stand by the principle of you can only read a book for the first time once. So why rush? It’s about the journey not the destination. I read what I want when I want. And I talk about it on my channel. I want to inspire and empower readers to do the same. We live in such a fast world. It’s okay to slow down and smell the flowers. Sit in silence and enjoy a book at your own pace. Ignore all the pressure.
It’s your opinion certainly (so it’s valid), but you really can’t judge a “period” novel based on current social moralities only. Not only is Lonesome Dove based in an 1870’s Western era, but it was also written 4 decades ago, when readers weren’t so sensitive about the portrayals of violence, rape, and prostitution. I truly respect what you are saying, but I’m so glad that I’m old enough to have read so many great novels when they were released without the bias of current fiction. Just this week, I’ve listened to other BookTube content creators rate Lord of the Rings poorly because it’s not as well-written as current fantasy and another guy say that he didn’t enjoy reading Huckleberry Finn because it badly needed an editor. Those 2 were certainly written before I was born, but at least I read them at a time when I could acknowledge and respect the importance of the novels historically and as influence on many works that followed. I applaud you for at least that kind of acknowledgement. Lonesome Dove is my favorite novel of all time. Shogun is number 2. Pillars of the Earth is number 3. Lord of the Rings and Huckleberry Finn have always been in my top 10, but some more recent works are beginning to creep above them. I’ve always leaned more towards fantasy and sci-fi works, so it always fascinated even myself that my 3 favorite novels weren’t in those genres. I just acknowledged my enjoyment of the stories and my awe at how well they were written. Of more recent fantasy writers, Steven Erikson comes closest. I’m so jealous that I don’t have the skills of storytelling and creativity that those guys possess. Love your content.
I’m glad to hear someone talking about how they loved the whole series of Babel, usually I hear that the end is weak and unfulfilling. I’m most intrigued by the long price quartet, I definitely want to check out that one
in your 100 books do you count Mangas and comic/graphic novels, short stories etc etc.... I did this and my numbers are higher because of it; either way I feel your pain as I have some of the same issues
I do count them, but it doesn't really bother me. I would count a short middle grade novel, which takes about the same amount of time for me to finish as a manga.
Tori, I don't know how to break this to you, but I think your husband's hacked your channel! I hope you get back control, but he has some charisma...perhaps he should have his own segment, if that's one of his demands.
Great video! I am a big fan of Spy x Family and One Piece. I need to give the other books you mentioned a try at some point, so I'll have to add them to the ever growing TBR. Also, I love Watership Down and spotted it behind you on the bookshelf.
Wow Ben is very well spoken and I appreciated his thoughts!! Out of curiosity has he read all of your books Tori? 😅😅
He has! Often before anyone else does 🥰
@ does he have a favorite?
@@iSamwise He says Cold Silver for Souls, which is my current WIP and the first book I'll be publishing this year :D
@ does it have a release date?
@@iSamwise Not officially yet, but I'll announce it on my channel when I do. :)
Top 5 booktuber doesn’t even have his own channel 😎
And yet he has a big fan club on my channel who wants to hear him talk about books. He’s pretty cool. 😎
So fun seeing Ben! I'll hopefully get to Babel this year, and Jingo is actually the Discworld I have coming up! Couldn't agree more on LPQ!
Like husband, like wife in taste! Great choices, Ben! 😊
FINALLY. THE BEN HAS COME BACK TO BOOKTUBE!
Wow, I had never heard about the Books of Babel. I just added it to my potential reads for 2025. I love steampunk and you don't find as much of it. Thanks, really looking forward to it!l
The Books of Babel are such that one wants to remake their top ten of all time list. After a year I am almost caught up with One Piece. Well done video talk, dude.
Loved the cut edit at the start! Some big reads in this set, and some that I already own 🥳
My favourites would be: A Brightness Long Ago / Guy Gavriel Kay Tawny Man 1: Fool's Errand Wars of Light & Shadow 3: Warhost of Vastmark Earthsea 4: Tehanu The Merchant & The Alchemist's Gate / Ted Chiang Mystic River / Dennis Lehane Lonesome Dove / Larry McMurtry The Disaster Artist / Greg Sestero Memory Sorrow & Thorn 3: Green Angel Tower Hobb would dominate this if I didn't limit this to 1 per author 😅 Like she'd have 6 books at least 2024 was easily my best reading year in a very long time, but also, the best year for me irl in a very long time. I'm amazed I read as much as I did, considering I put more time and effort into weight loss than reading.
I’m so glad 2024 was such a good year for you, that’s awesome to hear! I hope 2025 is just as positive. Health goals are incredibly important, good for you!
Long Price Quartet is amazing. AMAZING. Excellent choice, my book of the year also!
Here, here! The ability to offer a change of perspective is my favorite thing about reading. Also, I read WHITE FANG when I was really young, and it hit me so hard. I've never read it as an adult, and you've made me really excited to return to it after all this time. Thanks!
I hope you love the reread! It’s such a good book. 🙌🏻
My husband is a massive Earthsea fan but I bounced off it hard with very similar rections to yours. If you're looking for contemporary romance recommendations, can I suggest Role Playing by Cathy Yardley - fun and interesting and impactful - and about gamers!
Thank you for the recommendation! 🙌🏻
I like Ben's channel, please oust Tori again sometime 😂😂😂😂
Loved this-the intro was perfect too
Hod king is really good
Ben!!!!
My husband loves most of these so I guess I have birthday shopping done for 2025
Ben: I am the captain now
I've been on the fence with the Babel series but hearing both your raving reviews is changing my mind and making me want to add it to the TBR.
Same!
Thanks for your best of 2024 Ben. That was a nice surprise 😃
Spy Family is great. The Daughter and the dog crack me up. Always makes my day when I read one.
HI Ben! I can completely relate to your experience reading The Hod King. The end of Arm of the Sphinx left me so scared and anxious I was actually terrified to move on. When I finally got to The Hod King I was so on edge, worrying for all these characters. This series had such a visceral reaction on me I knew it would be a favorite. I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed; The Books of Babel are definitely underrated!! That's why I talk about and recommend the series as much as I can. I'm also reading through LPQ. I need to get to A Betrayal in Winter next. Hopefully, I end up loving this series too.
to be clear, this was Ben admitting he's a secret spy?
When do we get a BenTalks channel?
Someday when I have the time 😅 -Ben
Weird that it would count a single manga in the same weight as a whole novel when representing how much total reading one does a year. They need to make that 0.1 or 0.2. takes me a fraction of the time to get through 20 volumes of, e.g.,one piece than it would to get through a comparable YA book (which is on average one book a day with YA titles).
Whatever works for you! Thanks for watching.
I’m going to make nomads of the sea my next read so I can read it before it gets more popular Thanks for your content Tori
I hope you have a great time with it!
I hope these aren’t in order because John Gwynne is on the same level as Tolkien. Otherwise a great video. Thank you.
They are in order. It’s going to be different for everyone :) thanks for watching.
11:50 Have you read His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik? The Napoleonic wars, but with dragons, and the English gentleman protagonist learns about what true honor is as the series progresses. I loved the first book, didn't get around to the others. My mom loved the entire series.
Btw, I think my favorite classic dragons are two animated by Disney: Maleficent at the end of Sleeping Beauty - "Now shall you deal with me, o prince, and all the powers of hell!" - and Mad Madam Mim's final form in the wizard's duel in The Sword and the Stone.
I have not read it but I have friends who have!
Hey, Tori, would you recommend starting with Deadhouse Gates, or the first book in the Malazan series? I recently read the 2008 novel Graceling by Kristin Cashore, and loved it. I saw the title, picked it up off the library shelf, and started reading. Didn't read the blurb until I was half-way into the novel. I've never read anything quite like it. Every twist and turn was different than I expected and it was paced really well. It's like it was written for me. I don't know if I could have fully appreciated it when it first came out - my life is different now, of course, so my understanding is so much more nuanced - but I think it's a great example of feminist fantasy done well. A motley crew of characters and found family, yet no loss of personal autonomy.
I would definitely recommend starting with Gardens of the Moon. The style and tone are a bit different than the following books, but it’s still an important opening for the characters! 💜 I’m so glad you had a great time with Graceling! I haven’t read that one.
Kitty! Aww, so beautiful. 🥰🐾 I also have a little brown tiger kitty. He's very soft and likes greeting me at the door with my sister's large dogs.
💜💜💜
🩷I'm glad you enjoyed Northanger Abbey. I really need to reread that at some point. And the world is a better place because you are in it too
Aww thanks Kaat 💜 Have you read other Austen books too?
@@ToriTalks2 I've also read Pride & Prejudica and Sense & Sensibility. Both definitely worth reading
@thefairylibrarian3282 I'm really looking forward to both of those! I'm reading Persuasion next.
@@ToriTalks2 I hope you enjoy it! I think my next one is going to be Emma whenever i'm in an Austen mood
Can you imagine if Deadhouse Gates wouldn't have held up on re-read? Lol, glad we averted that potential identity crisis 🤣 Absolutely love your unapologetic gushing over Discworld, you are singlehandedly rekindling my interest in that series. My favourites of December were Obsidian: Revelation by Sienna Frost, Pluralities by Avi Silver and Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson 🤩
Omg, thank goodness. XD The entire channel would crumble. I'm so happy to rekindle your interest! I think you'd like the audiobooks. <3
