I am a highly avid reader - primarily of the sci-fi and fantasy genres. I normally read somewhere around a hundred books a year, or so. Prior to my conversion to e-readers, I used to frequently reread novels, and the better I liked one, the more likely I was to re-read it multiple times (obviously). Since switching to e-reading, that tendency has diminished with the easy access to whatever my next read will be (not having to take the time to actually get to a book store to stock up on my next set of TBRs). However, with this book I found myself continually drawn back to it (this was assisted by the time having to wait for the 2nd book to come out, having read the first shortly after its initial publication). I agree with all of your points. Strong and highly engaging character development, enticing world building, a familiar but still unique progression mechanic that did not overly intrude on the story or characters, but rather complemented them in an extremely well done manner. I was extremely pleased to see that the (long-awaited) sequel did not let up on the quality or engagement factor. It is not simply more of the same (which would have suffered from the loss of originality), but rather a further evolution of all the groundwork that was laid in the inaugural volume. I look forward to the continuation, and foresee many more trips back into this world through re-reads of these two initial volumes while waiting. On a separate note, I have seen mentioned by you, and others, in the comments another book series - Super Powereds by Drew Hayes. I totally agree with the recommendations that this is another engaging and immersive series that will likely capture you if you liked Iron Prince. It is probably the only other series among my reads over the past few years that I have gone back to reread as much as I have the Warformed series. Totally different genre (super heroes), but still capturing many of the same beats that you mentioned attracted you so much to this work.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed it so much! I think the potential for this series is phenomenal. I can't wait to read more of it. I have been recommended Superpowereds before, and I definitely want to check it out. I have the first book on my e-Reader already. :D
I started Iron Prince on 13 July. I finished Fire and Song on 15 July. That series ate an entire weekend; I couldn't put it down. The character development is brilliant and the plot is both non-stop and compelling. It might be my best book of the year. NB: This strongly reminded me of Drew Hayes's Super Powereds series (which I like even more). If you haven't read that series, please do-it does what this book does with more varied and deeper characters (IMO).
Wow, that's a serious binge! I totally get it though, the "can't put it down" is SO strong with this book. It's excellent. Some of the best realistic character work I've read in a while. Superpowereds is another series that Andrew has told me to read, so I'll definitely check it out!
After you and Andrew praising this book this much, Iron Prince shot up to the top of my TBR. I love found family and have been wanting to try progression fantasy.
Nice! Happy to see this book get more love. Its honestly so damn good. It really feels like a school based fantasy anime. I really enjoyed book 2 as well. My only thing is, I'm curious to see if the scope of the story evolves in future books. Cause theoretically, they're soldiers and their society is at war with aliens, but thats not actually part of the story whatsoever. In reality theyre not soldiers at all, they're just athletes under the army's media and propaganda department. So Im just curious to see how things develop. I think this series should become as successful as Cradle though. Its sooo good!
It's SO good! And I totally agree, the potential is really strong with this series, I am excited to see where the authors go with it. The payoff could be phenomenal!
Okay okay Wizard had already piqued my interest in this book but you just totally sold me. I was a bit nervous about the character work, but hearing you gush about it makes me very relieved and excited! I am bumping this up the priority list, I NEED one of those 'I can't stop reading, this story is my life' experiences again, it's been too long 🥲
Iron Pince would have been my book of the month for September if it wasn't for Dungeon Crawler Carl. I know you had issues with the book, but I just had more fun with DCC (all hail Princess Donut) I got the sequel right away, but I probably won't read it till either December or January

I found that in Battle mage by Peter Flannery well develop character story not just action scenes I will have to take a look at this book as well
Oooh! I’ll check Battle Mage out.

YES YES YES GO READ IT. Honestly the characterization is my favorite part of the book. The plot isn't crazy complex, but you can't put it down.
