JJ Redick went viral by ripping Doc Rivers for blaming other people for his failure and taking credit for others’ success. He actually has a point with the former Clippers coach but his rant was actually a big mistake.

I don’t see anything wrong with what JJ said. The show is literally called “First Take”. We want to listen to what the commentators say and how they analyze the game. Big fan of yours, but I don’t see JJ being the next Perk. We’re all thinking the same thing, JJ just has the moral and ethics to say what we all think of Doc.

It ain't hard to call out the guy everyone knows how overrated he is. I haven't seen anybody to support Doc. And JJ is no near Perk. JJ is really smart and try to prove his points with statistics too. Perk says any BS that comes to his mind. You don’t see him as being the next perk? You’d have a point if he didn’t switch to yelling his points to get them across. Keep in mind he didn’t start his job as an analyst like that. Instead people appreciated his levelheaded takes. He literally has copied parts of Perk and Stephen A’s style of analyzing. He makes overexaggerated takes here and there as well when again he was liked more for his level headed takes. He isn’t near perk but he copies heavily from him and Stephen A as his style tends to switch.

Its because doc doesn’t actually coach. He walks in there like he is the shit, shakes a few hands before practice, yells nonsense a couple times and then tells his starts that they are responsible for the team and that they need to figure it out and execute.
The stars/vets love this because its easy, they don’t have to do any work, they never practice. Glenn’s teams always have top tier players so they easily beat lower level teams even without any strategies or teamwork. Then when the stars are injured all of the young promising players on his team that be refused to play end up playing with 110% effort and winning the game thinking that they will be able to earn playing time. 2 times in glenns coaching career he was forced to play a young superstar due to injuries and then the ownership stepped in to make sure he kept playing the young player when the vets came back.
Since Glenn doesn’t actually do any coaching, when his team plays in the playoffs he has no ideas for making adjustments. This is why he has so many blown leads because in a series the enemy makes an adjustment, and Glenn has no responses to those adjustments. He thinks he just needs to tell his players to play harder, and that execution is the only reason they are losing.
Nick Nurse is the complete opposite of that. He switches up his offense and defense like 10 times a game, and if a player isn’t playing well he takes them out and isn’t afraid to give the bench or gleaguers some real minutes, then when the gleaguer is balling out he leaves them in to finish the game. The end result has been that the Sixers have been remarkably consistent this year. When they play bad teams that get an early lead and hold or expand that lead. Games are never close against bad teams, unless most of the team is injured. Also, when they do have a bad first half, they always have a good 3rd quarter that brings them back into the game.
With that being said nick isn’t perfect. His problem is that he expects all of his players to give 110% at all times, and he distributes playing time based on effort. This has been a primary cause of many of sixers injuries, they have a lot of injuries happen in practice. Also, players like Maxey and Oubre have been losing their shooting legs because Nurse gives them 40+ minutes a game since those two guys are cardio monsters that are constantly running and thus never taken out. I’d much prefer Nurse’s style of coaching though because he at least rewards players for working hard.

Doc as a coach is the same as when he was a player. Fun to watch. Knows basketball. Not entirely effective. He played on the Spurs toward the end of his career - and I always enjoyed rooting for him. But I can see how people are like, 'get someone new in here'... Spurs did.

In a recent podcast episode JJ did say he did not regret the content of what he said, but he wished he would have delivered it in a less acerbic manner. I mean it's probably happened to a lot of us before, so I sympathize with him. He might have been thinking about the Doc stuff analytically for days, and the more he thought about it the more reasons he'd find for it to piss him off, and when he decides to bring it up on First Take he suddenly explodes, before wondering why he got so worked up about it 5 minutes later. I don't think he wants to be the "intelligent Kendrick Perkins" guy, I think this one outburst at least was just him getting swept up in the frustration.
Also I think JJ is too intelligent to not be aware that educational content will always have fewer views than outrage content. First Take must really be pushing his buttons. Plus, that statement was in defense of KD, when SAS said KD could be doing more to educate fans about basketball or something to that effect.

What is getting lost in all this is that the sports media world and fans all went onto social media and started bashing Doc before he was hired. This all happened during down times in sports when the "talking heads" have to much time and have been waiting for Doc to say anything to spin it in a negative way.

Kawhi wanting a second star to go with him to la has been well-documented and was reported that it would've basically been a dealbreaker if they couldn't secure a 2nd star. Not sure why doc should get criticism for that when the clippers have a really hands on owner and people in their front office like jerry west and lawrence frank who probably had more influence than doc on personnel decisions at that point.

I have read a humble quote, "Take the blame, give the Credit."
But I think Doc Rivers does it in reverse, "Take the Credit, give the Blame"
If someone give him the credit on what he is taking, (the shai, harden, and more, thing) thats good but talking about it and praising yourself is like kissing your own rooster.

I think you missed his point.
He wasn’t trying to lecture the audience on what they should like. He was responding to Stephen A saying the players, specifically Kevin Durant, have a responsibility to educate the masses on the intricacies of basketball. And JJ said “is it really?” He called Stephen A and the format and style of First Take to task for what they prioritize in reporting. He said it’s the media’s job to educate on those intricacies. He’s right. Because basketball when covered by ESPN and the like is akin to a soap opera.
It’s controlled by narrative. Whereas football you get more focus on strategy. There are former athletes who are now analysts break down film to educate the viewer. Its one of the best things about football season. NBA coverage isn’t dominated by Xs and Os but by the GOAT debate, beef, and Old Heads lamenting about the old days. Thats because the NBA built its brand on narrative over the last 40 years so thats what draws in the audience. JJ is refreshing because you learn more about why and how the NBA evolved instead of bitching about the change.

I understand editing the story for time, but at the end you represented it like it was JJ's idea to bring up how fans want to be educated, that was SAS. And also it was the next day in regards to KD and leadership. If I hadn't seen both of these clips I might not have known how misleading your journalism was in this case. Otherwise I like your channel, but I'm now going to have to question your edits. Not ideal, AM.

Best years came because of who he played ‘with’, not who he played for. CP3, Blake, and DeAndre. Having Doc and Austin there was more of a hindrance than anything.

Doc will throw anyone and everyone under the bus and will keep doing it as long as he can. JJ won't apologize or back down and he shouldn't because he is 100% right. It shows that Doc can't take it.

And no, austin river's rebutal to JJ reddick wasn't a slam dunk because all he said was the media and us fans hold him accountable on top of the management as well. That applies to literally EVERYONE. That's not JJ's point, his point was that Doc HIMSELF never held himself accountable

Not sure about the comparison between Redick and Perkins. There's a huge difference in substance between Redick vs Perkins because there's level of intellect and logic behind what Redick says whereas Perkins would more often than not spew ignorant nonsense. There was nothing wrong with what he said about Rivers. What I didn't get is the whole blip about Kevin Durant but then I guess it was in response to what Stephen A Smith was saying (about Durant not educating people) and I think that was also bunch of nonsense.

Phil Jackson points more fingers per loss than any human I've seen. After he lost to my Pistons in 2004 I read his book The Last Season: A Team In Search of Its Soul and was surprised to learn nothing was his fault, according to him, and everyone was an idiot but him. How about adjusting to the Pistons picking up Kobe a little higher in their half-court defense, instead of beating your head against the wall for 5 straight games?
Comparative analysis is needed to keep tethered to reality. Then we can judge if JJ's argument is logical, which it may be.
Coaches say SO much publicly, especially those with TV gigs. What's the ratio of coaches criticizing players in public vs criticizing themselves? Doc may be on the low end. Easy to cherry pick to fit a narrative.
Doc is right about Ben Simmons, which we can all agree on.
