    What many Americans call Indie Rock that comes from Australia ( 'Straya) we called Pub Rock because that is where many of these musicians gained experience and honed their skills. If they weren't any good the Pub crowds would have let them know for certain. Aahh good times.....

    Another Aussie classic! In terms of genre, it probably best fits under "Classic Aussie Pub Rock", a unique category that covers a wide variety of bands and sounds. The basic test for whether a song is Pub Rock is, "would it be found in the jukebox (or karaoke machine, or cover band set list) at an Australian pub or club?"

  • @goldenchild4835

    ... and to a very different version eight months ago, New Years Eve 2023 at Sydney Opera House on the Harbour, same song Mark dedicated it to his mother and sang it with his daughter. Fantastic!

    There is something in the timbre of the lead singer Mark Seymour's,vocals in this song that brings out a yearning , a longing in me. He wrote this song about his mother. 'The Holy Grail', is another good song from them.

    • @turdferguson400
      @turdferguson400 19 дней назад +1

      I agree. Mark is incredibly sexy. The look, the presence, the voice. In this clip he reminds me a bit of Joe Strummer. I always thought he was sexy too. And he had a similar ‘longing’ in his voice and style. ❤️🇦🇺👍

      @@turdferguson400 Hmm. I wasn't meaning sexy. I was meaning an existential longing or yearning. Oops -- I'll have to watch my wording in future !😂

    I'll never understand why people have to assign a genre to one song when they have no idea about the band. I first saw H&C in 1985 at the Sunderland hotel in Sydney and the first song they played was "Say Goodbye", I'd never seen a pub rock band with a french horn in their brass. needless to say I was hooked.

    Besides the US being very closed and only promoting their own, the next biggest reason Aussie bands never found much success in the US, was because they couldn't be shoehorned into a Genre, and the radio stations, gigs, concerts, bars, and festivals, were genre based.
    Australia is unique in that the bands and singers have a small audience to capture, and they had to do it live in pubs. That means they had to appeal to everyone so they either mixed genres in the songs, or at least across their sets.
    If you weren't keen on one song on the night, you used that time to go and grab a drink and by the time you came back 'your' music was playing again.
    If you didn't like the start of a song, you could probably still hum the tune or sing the chorus, if not ignore it and tune back in again in a couple of minutes.

    H&C are great, sort of always getting played on radio, tv commercials and big wvents like the AFL Grand Final! I love their music, but never really go out of my way to listen to them, bit always enjoy them when I hear them.
    Fun Fact: Mark Seymour is the brother of Crowded House's bassist, Nick Seymour.

    This song while being one of their most popular songs is not indicative of their sound. I would suggest “Say Goodbye “ but there are many more that show their true genre of Aussie pub rock.
