  • Cats, those mysterious and independent creatures, have a fascinating history with humans.
They didn't start hanging around us because we were handing out food, like we did with dogs. No, cats found farms to be excellent hunting grounds, chasing down the critters that feasted on our crops.
The exact timeline of this feline-human friendship is a bit foggy, but we think it started around 10,000 years ago, coinciding with the rise of agriculture in the Fertile Crescent.
Intriguingly, the first concrete evidence of this bond is a 9,500-year-old gravesite in Cyprus. Here, a cat skeleton was found near a human one - a significant discovery because Cyprus had no native cats, meaning humans must've brought them over.
So, did we domesticate cats? Current theories suggest the opposite - cats may have domesticated themselves.
